Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Local friends recommended this spot. It was very busy and had only one server so one had to be patient but the service was good and the food was really good too. We enjoyed having some European favourites. The sole with mashed potatoes with clams...was excellent and the bitterballen were reminders of long ago visits to Holland. We recommend this place.More

Quick drink before we got back on our cruise ship turned into 2 rounds of drinks. Cosy pub with friendly service. Within walking distance of the Port Chalmers Cruise Terminal.

You can't beat asking a local for advice and this experience was no exception. We traveled for a couple of weeks, eating out most nights and this was our most enjoyable meal.

We stopped in for a beer and found a friendly group of locals already enjoying a shared pitcher. Everyone greeted us and soon we were chatting about our travels and their town. Well worth the stop.

Atmosphere is a nod to seafarers(think pictures of sailing ships old charts etc), felt happy and while there were booths for more privacy the feeling was friendly and content diners. I was impressed by the friendly staff and the thoughtfulness, Dad had a drink brought...out that the server made a point of saying they weren't sure about it because it hadn't sounded as fizzy as it should have when she opened it but to let her know, when he had a sip it was a flatter than it should have been, she replaced it with no issue. We had the wontons as a starter one each from one starter but they were a good size ( I couldn't finish my main) I had Pan Fried Fish of the Day Served on potato and clam mash with braised fennel, and an olive beurre blanc. which was amazing, a really good portion size though so if you are like me and not into huge portion sizes maybe take it into account or take some home . Overall a great night out, great service and I am sure ne day it will end up as my local.More

What a fabulous pub; everything you’d wish one to be!! Inviting atmosphere with cosy fire and not-too-loud music and perfectly kept real ale from a hand-pull and Townsend ESB no less. An interesting, appealing menu; the specials sounded delicious but we weren’t very hungry so...opted for a few entrees. These were obviously very carefully prepared and delicious and then …… to top it all - the crème brulée; WOW!! As the owner and chef said, it’s actually a very easy dish but soooo many people get it wrong; not at the Portsider I’m delighted to say; it was stunning, just perfect, couldn’t fault it. I’m a total chocolate fiend but I resisted the chocolate dessert my husband chose which was also very good. Very sad that we’re leaving tomorrow so only had one opportunity to spend some time here. Well done guys, many thanks and keep up the great work!More
