Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

2 takeaway coffees and pie for $18.50. That’s expensive. Pie was ok, but not worth $7.50. The flat white was good thankfully.

We rarely go to the same place twice while traveling, but we made an exception for Salt Air Cafe. Lunch was so good we returned for an early breakfast the next morning. Our waitress both times was delightful, and the food was delicious. I would suggest the French toast with bacon and banana, and my wife and friend said the pies were excellent. Coffee was good, too. Wish we could go back!

Salt Air is a gem in Ngunguru. In the past few weeks, on a holiday in the area, I have been for lunch, dinner and to buy their amazing pies to take away. The food is interesting, fresh and delicious. The staff are very friendly and helpful and were willing to adapt meals to taste if requested. Salt Air is a casual beach style cafe with indoor and outdoor options and a great, relaxed feel about it. It is licensed or BYO for a fee. Did I mention the pies? Delicious!

Year's ago we were introduce to Salt Air Cafe pie's by a friend. Now everytime we go through Ngunguru we make sure we plan a visit to Salt Air Cafe for one (or two or three :) ) of their many amazing pie's. Even my wife who doesn't like pie's asks are we stopping for a pie. My only recommendation would be to try it yourself if you are visiting the Tutukaka coast.

Called into the Salt Air on a rainy day for a cup of coffee, but the menu was so extensive that we decided to stay for lunch. This was served promptly and was very good. It is obviously very popular with locals and passing workers alike and has a fun atmosphere. Nice experience.

Only cafe at Ngunguru but well stocked display cabinet and a menu on the wall to choose from. We chose fish and chips. Nicely cooked and came with a side salad. You had choice of inside or outside seating. It was okay, no complaints, just a bit tired looking. Would go again.

6 of us had a quick lunch at Salt Air Cafe. Good food served by very helpful staff. Great prices for a simple but varied menu choice. Great if passing this area.

a very pleasant cafe right across the main road, on the beach. Very good fish n chips and squid; AND...it's a BYO restaurant. a MAJOR plus.

Came to this place with high expectations and ordered the hotcakes. It came out with two very thin flat looking pancakes with what looked like whipped cream and raspberry all over it. The cream was so watery and the raspberry had no flavor. The pancake itself tasted like grease and was soaked in bacon oil. Being a vegetarian I was so disgusted with the taste of the oil that overpowered the hotcakes. It was inedible and when I spoke to the manager about it, he did not even try to create a solution for the unsatisfactory taste of the food and instead got defensive and made me look like I did not know what I was talking about. Will never go back to this cafe and it was a waste of money! Left the place still hungry and felt like I just gave $16.50 away for a disgusting aftertaste left in my mouth.

We have a bach in Matapouri, a few kms up the coast from here, but when we want to go out for breakfast, lunch or brunch, this is our first choice. The atmosphere is light and airy, with some nice artwork on the walls by local artists (usually for sale). Their menu is pretty much standard NZ cafe food, but all well done, served promptly and at a good price. Nice outdoor area, so dogs are welcome.

We holiday in Ngunguru every year and always look forward to visiting Salt Air Cafe. Great food, especially the home made pies. They sell fresh homemade bread every day. Coffee is good. Worth a look.

A very nice and local place - we enjoyed dinner two nights in a row. First night we both had their fresh and local fish with chips, the second night my husband had the fish burger and I had the salmon pizza - with capers, cream cheese! Really good food, cute place. Good prices and nice wine. They are doing a good job.
