Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We called in here passing by & got 2 gluten free muffins to go. We used them the next couple of days & wow. They were tasty, delicious warmed for 10 seconds in the microwave. We stopped again next time passing & also got some gluten free Louise cake to go. We heated one muffin & shared for the next few days. They are really good. We are not from the area & don’t often buy take home food as it is rarely so tasty or tempting. The Louise cake was able to be cut up & also shared. What a great find!!

Nice friendly and accommodating staff. Good selection on menu, for takeaway or dine in. Gluten free options including fish, chips and pizza. Also has some lovely local art works on display and for sale. Kids burger and chips was very generous size!

Just was passing Ngunguru back to Whangarei. Saw the cafe sign -was apprehensive and thought - probably very average. But anything but. Delicious Snapper- best probably I've had at cafe, chips were crisp, and a lovely salad. A complete meal and a clean little cafe. Young staff need a bit more training otherwise I wish this cafe well.

Very disappointed. Having recently moved here we were excited to go for our first breakfast but were sorely disappointed. The service is slow and appalling. When you place your order at the counter it is laborious. We ordered an omelette and a pie and a coffee. Basic right? Apparently not. Took about 5 minutes just to get the order taken. My omelette, pretty average arrived first. The waiter then asked if we'd ordered anything else so he could take our number table sign. We had to repeat that we were still awaiting the pie(already warm right at their deli counter) and my coffee. Another waitress eventually showed up with my coffee and we were again asked if we had ordered anything else. By now my omelette was already eaten and we had to even tell the waitress what kind of pie we had ordered. Eventually got pie. Bog standard pie that tasted like we could have picked it up from the local petrol station. Huge thumbs down. Coffee not arriving before or at least with the meal a big no-no. And the coffee was cold to boot. Luckily since this experience we have been told by locals the other spot to get a real breakfast.

Three years after giving this cafe a poor review, we thought we'd try again in the hope that everything had improved. No such luck, the takeaway pie tasted old and was burnt. The mini quiche tasted ok, but was very greasy. We also felt that both items were over priced and the person on the counter didn't seem to know what she was doing. To sum it up, the food was not good, service awful and the prices were a rip-off.

My friend and I had the seafood chowder for lunch and were bitterly disappointed with what was served up to us. There was no fresh fish/seafood of any kind in the chowder - just pre-frozen seafood and loads of surimi, which we all know is imitation crab meat. The 'creamy chowder' was thick and gluey and had a type of skin on the top. Also the bread that came with it was stone cold. Both my friend and I had uncomfortable tummies after leaving the cafe. The whole eating experience was disappointing and I will not be recommending this establishment to any family or other friends.

This café is really tucked away and its outlook isn't the greatest. Even so we were rather amazed by the number of people lined up for both sit-down and takeaway food and beverages. The menu comprised an extensive array of low to mid priced café items such as burgers, pizzas, fish and chips, pies and the like. The pies in particular seem to enjoy a big reputation. Our party only had coffee and scones so we were not in a position to comment on food quality but if you're looking for a big hearty meal at a modest price and don't need too much finesse, the Salt Air Café might be your best bet in Ngungaru.

First time here in my neighborhood, and will be my last. No excuse as there were only 2 other couples here (no wonder!) My pot of green tea was like only half full at best (small pot), he forgot my mussel fritter. So were detained. The couple next to us said their coffee was disgusting. Just telling how it is.

Visited twice, brunch and dinner. They are well known for their pies, but we'd also recommend their curries and the superb generous mussel fritters.

There are not a lot of dining options in Ngunguru (pronounced NUN-er-roo), but this is a good one. It has a large enough menu to handle a variety of preferences, including vegetarian. Don't be put off by the fact that it says "Fish & Chips" - the menu has pizzas, sandwiches, breakfast food & salads. The staff is excellent, and it is co-located with a frozen yogurt trailer, allowing smoothies to be ordered from the cafe when the trailer is open. Coffee and beer also available. Family friendly, and we had no problem getting seating. Takeaway available.
