Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Attended a wedding a couple of weeks ago and oh wow!! Great venue. Superb graze style food. The lamb racks and blue cod were sublime. Friendly staff and everything we wanted at the bar. Thank you Hideaway crew for delivering a special day for the...bride and groom. We all had an awesome time.More

We went here for a work function. First I would like to say that the food was really great. Well presented, and very yummy. Couldn't fault the food its self, and the setting is very nice and comfortable. Unfortunately the front of house staff with...the exception of one young man, were just plan rude and Unhelpful. Firstly in booking we could not get a straight answer about what food we were going to get on the night until a day out. Then their was some confusion about their corking policy for some non alcoholic grape juice. The platters we had asked for did not appear, and they said they had no knowledge of us wanting this - but we had clearly told them what we wanted in an email. After the main, we wanted a little break between that and dessert so that we could talk to our staff and say a few thank you's, my wife was very rudly told " don't you know you are the third function we have had here today, and we just want to go home!" It was only 8.45. Not one of the ladies smiled at us or greated us, or said goodbye, or ask if there is anything we needed or wanted, the whole night. When desert came out - no they would not wait - as there was no knife or cake slice for the pavalova , I went to the servery to ask for a knife, and was very rudly told that there was a spoon there to dish the pav. I told them that no one dishes pav with a spoon! "Well thats how we do it" I was told rather rudely. Then at the end of the night the bar staff tried to double dip in charges against the bar costs, which thankful one of our staff was on to, and had evidence that this had allready been prepaid. I would definitely not recommend anyone to go here for a function, and would suggest that the staff be trained in customer service and presentation. No one wants to pay to be spoken rudly to at a restaurant, and treated as if you are a problem for them. The only reason it get 2 stars is due to the food and the building.More

Please give this restaurant a chance. No it’s not in the centre, nor does it look like your typical restaurant but who wants bland, normal average food anyway?! This place serves great food with a lovely, passionate chef who cares about the food he puts...on your plate. It’s never flashy for the sake of being flashy, everything is about great taste. Those who want meat and vege type meals (but the best they’ve ever had) will be happy. Great fire too which makes it a good place to enjoy a drink beforehand. Southland’s best kept secret... go!More

Ate here middle of 2016 & was fantastic. Had heard things had gone downhill & they were right. From the moment we walked in we knew it was going to be bad... Absolutely slow Service for a very minimal Friday lunch crowd, we ended up...grabbing our own menus only to told several minutes later they were Dinner menus. They had to borrow Lunch menus from the next table, even though they were only A4 & laminated, not a book menu. We seen 2 plates sitting under the lights for more than 10 minutes, for them to brought out to us with the remaining 3 dishes.. Ours was lukewarm, pregnant co worker had to ask for hers to re-heated. Panko crumbed Blue Cod was a joke, no crumbs on the bottom just a dusting on top. Chips were hot but not cooked through properly. Unfortunately will not be back until I hear they have a new chef, which maybe too late for the Hideaway. Disappointing as it is a beautiful venue.More

We had been told that this was a superb restaurant, but were VERY disappointed. Poor service, food cold, and not as good as expected. Would not recommend you take a group to this restaurant.

A very disappointing visit to a restaurant we had great expectations of. The food was not as good as the prices suggested: steaks were tough, as was the lamb; my fish wasn't very hot; cannelloni was cold; and a mushroom pasta dish was declared uneatable....Service not good. It was a big group but we had booked.More

Phoned & made a booking for 4 people, on a saturday night, was told to be there at 6.30pm & that we would need to have our food order into the kitchen before 6.45pm because of a large party coming in at 7pm. We were...there on time and waited for 20 mins before asking for someone to take our drinks order - our food order still hadnt been taken, our drinks arrived, we still were not asked for our food order, we finally had to ask for our food order to be taken. There seemed to be plenty of staff on that night but they just didnt seem organised! there didnt seem to be anyone overseeing the staff. Food was only average, would think twice about going back.More

My Mum and I went here before watching a rugby game with family. It is the best food I have had in Southland. I had two entrees - the seafood chowder and the duck. The chowder came in a bread bowl. It was so good...and the chowder soaked into the bread so you could eat that after. I wasn't so fussed on the duck. My Mum ordered the mutton bird pate and loved it as she's never had mutton bird like that before.More

I came to the Hideaway 201 with my boyfriend for our anniversary and we had such an amazing experience. The atmosphere was very romantic and the restaurant is set out beautifully with candles and fairy lights everywhere. The food was to die for. So delicious...and a great array of food to choose from. I had the pork belly which was amazing and my boyfriend had the steak which he said was the best he's had! As for the service and staff this was wonderful, could not fault anything at all! We will definitely be coming back here and recommending to all our friends! Thanks The Hideaway 201!More

Three of us, two dishes each. Pork spring rolls were fairly average, sauces were nice. Pumpkin pie was good. Chicken burger has great flavours. Salmon risotto was very disappointing. Waitress was good, but food took a very long time, and the wait between courses was...much too long considering there were only two other tables.More
