Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Like other reviewers, we were pleasantly surprised by this cafe. It has a captive audience but the food was very tasty and well priced. There is a good selection of counter food and pies etc if you want something quick, or else there is a...good choice of hot food and larger meals. My daughter had the kids cheeseburger and it was excellent value being actually 2 mini burgers with fries which she was very happy with. The adults enjoyed their toasted sandwiches, a lamb wrap and some very good fries. There was a bit of a wait for our hot food but they ask you when your tour is and we had plenty of time before our tour. The cafe was busy but there were plenty of tables with seating inside and out and the service was efficient. Definitely worth a visit!More

I'm so happy that this place was available for a coffee and some snack, as I was quite hungry after few-hours long Hobbiton tour. The menu consists mostly from bagels and sandwiches, but you can also order from some breakfast options, that are warm and...very good - if you have some time, I recommend to go for this kind of meal. The whole place is quite busy, a with a big fluctuation of people. Ordering happens at the cash desk, but the order is bought to your table later on.More

We grabbed a snack whilst waiting for our tour to start. Plenty of seating even though the place was super busy. We had 2 pies and coffees which tasted really good and was well priced too.

Surprisingly cheap and good - the pies go on sale late in the day for $4 each, we got two pies and a cronut for $14 total and a delicious lunch. Free wifi too! Great spot to stop after your Hobbiton tour before getting back...on the roadMore

The Shire's Rest Cafe offers some delicious food, drinks and pastries. The cafe is also at the start/end point of the Hobbiton Movie Set Tours. We took the 9:00 tour and got back to the cafe around 11:00 so it was the perfect opportunity to...enjoy some elevensies! Hobbiton is a decent distance from other areas so we were happy to leave on a full stomach after the hearty breakfast, ginger crunch slice and a lemon poppy seed cake. Everything was delicious and fairly priced. We even took a couple of iced coffees for the road. There are other food experiences available with the tour but they were booked up very early when we were looking to visit. The cafe offers an opportunity to get food here and has a great view of the nearby farm. You order and pay at the front and take a queue device to your table, put it on the pad in the middle and the staff will bring the food to you. Very efficient.More

You would never guess how busy they were here. Despite the line of people going out the door (literally) the staff here were so efficient we were served with our lunch in no time. The food was delicious, undoubtedly we had the best fries we...have ever had before. Plenty of wonderful vegan options too which is important for my family. The staff were friendly even though they were run off their feet. The cafe was clean and the atmosphere as whole was delightfulMore

My Wife & I split a sandwich & apple strudel. I had a hot chocolate. It was all very good. Just had a 2 minute wait to order & received the food within 5 minutes. Nice lunch after our Hobbiton Tour.

Good selection of food and all reasonably priced. The lunch selection was wraps, sandwiches and bakery which was enough for us.

We came here 2 times during our visit as it was a great spot to relax in the hills especially during lambing season.. great food great atmosphere, and just nice to walk around the gift store which is write next to cafe. You do not...have to do the tour to come to the shires rest, there were locals who go each week which is nice and we stopped in on our way to Auckland for one last relax before the hustle and bustle of the city. Would absolutely recommend the shires rest even if you were not to do the tour you can just sit and relax there while your friends or family enjoyed their tour.More

Great coffee. Great service. A good choice of food and reasonable prices. There are lots of places to sit inside or outside. They prioritise orders for those leaving on tours but it didn't slow anything down. I watched the lady in charge briefing her staff...and I could see she is running a very efficient operation.More

We visited on a sunny Winter afternoon. It was not too busy and there were plenty of places to sit both indoors and out. The food was reasonably priced, and was much nicer than we through it would be - we expected typical touristy overpriced...cabinet food. The bacon and egg sandwich was a standout. Simple but very tasty. Hot and cold drinks available, including a small selection of beer and wine. Some vegan and gluten free food options available It was lovely sitting in the sunshine admiring the stunning view. Staff were friendly and efficient.More
