This place is super awesome. My boyfriend and I went for lunch and were pleasantly shocked to find that BAR serves ONLY pizza and salad! If you want anything other than salad or pizza, find something else. We ordered the BBQ Brisket pizza which was decorated with the perfect amount of jalapeños and sauce - and BOOM. Some of the best pizza I’ve had in years! We also shared a flight of beer which was a super cool experience considering the beers are mostly local (I want to say). Other comments, BAR is 21+ unless accompanied by an adult so it attracts older undergrads and young-professionals; which I like being a young professional myself! I love the atmosphere of this place also. It has this industrial, garage-like feel to it, and at night it’s a nightclub! Overall dining experience was excellent! Come with an empty stomach, and you won’t be disappointed !!

(Last visited 11/21/2021.) After brunching at Barracuda in downtown New Haven we hung out for a while in the park, but now it's dinnertime and we're still here! Lol. My fiancée had mentioned visiting BAR back in her hay-day so she wanted to show me the ropes. Here's how it went!
Atmosphere/Appearance: This place has such a presence inside and out. It's a staple in the downtown New Haven area so this place was pretty busy. The ceilings are so high and it felt like there were too main sections to this restaurant. There was the left side which is the bar area and much more lively then there was the right area which was more toned down. The big garage doors that open right out to the sidewalk were closed since it was cold, but it looked so industrial inside which was a pretty cool touch. There were big beer vats kinda stationed around, but I'm unsure if they actually brew their own beer here. They must, right? It's definitely a place to come and party for sure!
Service: We sat at the bar and Jerry was our bartender. He took excellent care of us. He was funny, had an uplifting personality and just was an all-around fun person to have.
Food: So... we were here around the time of Thanksgiving and there were whispers of a "Thanksgiving Pizza". C'mon man. How can we not get this? Lol. BAR is known for their pizzas being thin, crispy and cooked "New Haven" style, so we went for it! This thing came out and it was huge. On it was pulled turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy then sprinkled with cranberry sauce. It was actually quite magical. I had never had anything like it before and I absolutely loved how all of the ingredients went together, like a plate of food that you cook home from a Thanksgiving.
Value: The pizza was only $21.00 and I think that was an incredible value. I'm very interested in coming to check this place out in the future to see what some of their signature pizzas are all about!
If you made it this far in the review, I appreciate you reading. Please do me a favor and head on over to "The Hungry Road" on YouTube and subscribe! My channel features a lot of food, car and exclusive shoe related content! Help me grow! Thank you so much!

New Haven-style pizza is a must-try. We didn't know this until someone in town recommended it. The recommendation came with this restaurant as one of the three best pizza joints in town, and the other two were full, so we landed here. It did not disappoint. Even though the pizza looks huge, know that a family of four will easily demolish a large pizza if you are at all hungry. The pizza tastes amazing, and the crust is super-thin.

Sunday 12/06/2020 5:30pm, walked in, the host greets us, and I ask for a table for 4, he then automatically asks us all for our ID. Our group consisted of 3 of us well over 21+ and one member who was under 21 (over 18 years of age) home from college which I stated to the host. The host then stated that he couldn’t sit us because that person needed to be accompanied by a parent. Note, that we are all related (aunt, uncle and older sister) with the same last names. We told the host this and then he looks at us confused.
He then says with an inconsiderate, sarcastic attitude like tone and used his hands for expression, “But, are you his guardian?” It seemed like the host already made up his mind at this point and was clearly not going to seat us. Even if any of us were appointed as his guardian(s), did we need to prove this? Did he expect us to pull a document out? What difference of having a guardian there if the aunt, uncle and older sister with all the same last names well over the age of 21 were with him. He doesn’t know our family background and who takes care of who. Upset about the customer service, we just think the excuse of needing a parent was stupid if we are all related, considering we actually are all adults here.
Unaware that it was a complete bar setting and noticing a few other families with children in the place, we did not see any issue with being seated at a table to order some pizzas especially with all of us being related. Mind you, the other side of the place had its bar closed and was using that area just for dining in as well. How did that host decide those people accompanying them were the parents and or guardians? Did those parties get carded as well?
Other places such as Dave & Buster’s provide service as long as someone is over 21. We figured we could have just been seated since it was a Sunday night and they were not busy. We didn’t really see this as a big deal until he said it like that. It really didn’t make sense, there were other children there and we never even asked to be seated near the bar. The situation or the sarcastic response was not appreciated.

I don’t generally think of Bar as one of the top pizza places in New Haven, but they sure came through for us tonight. We ordered five large pizzas for the 12 of us and were amazed to find that it was the perfect amount. On the advice from f the staff, we ordered two large salads, but could easily have done with less than one.m still, it was pretty good, and the pizzas were terrific. During Covid, they converted the bar area in the back into extra, spaced-out dining area, and the local members of our gathering said that it made the place pleasant to eat in.

The pizza here is very very good, and I really love the atmosphere. You can even get slices late into the evening, if you stay to play pool, or stay at the bar, or go into the club area. They accommodate large groups if needed too.

The great thing about New Haven/the New Haven area is that there are plenty of other great pizza restaurants to visit. The pizza wasn't bad but it wasn't out of this world either. Staff are the worst out of all the places I've visited in a while. Slow, lazy, and all have an attitude. Please visit somewhere else.

Can’t go wrong with Bar. Large cheese with half meatballs we great. Table devoured it quickly. The salad is also a solid choice. The only downside is we had to wait about 30 mins for a table. But got a round of billiards in.

We had a fun evening out with family and enjoyed the pizza in this brick and industrial looking restaurant. The pizzas are thin crust and hand thrown and cut into strips. We enjoyed the mashed potato and bacon pizza as well as some more traditional kinds. It’s a fun place for a group dinner.

While Pizza and Pies might be great but staff and customer service is pathetic. Staff does not want to work or resolve the problem. Staff will lie to your face and manager has so much of rudeness and ego that as customer you really cannot do much as manager won't admit that their staff has made the mistake rather they will disrespect you and waste your time and even blame the everybody else.

We visited this evening as a group on the management programme at Yale, Michaela was the most amazing host, service was impeccable given we were close 50 people. She allowed us to play some music and enjoy ourselves in the private area at the back. She was so hospitable, gracious and really accommodating of our needs. Highly recommend this place and the pizza and staff, especially Michaela. Thank you!

Went to New Haven on a pizza trip and stopped in as Bar is noted for their pizzas.
Fun decor , it’s always a working beer hall and a nightclub,is it’s a little industrial funky, it’s works for them.
Had to show COVID vac card, and Id .
The server was nice, easy order, the pizza, only ok.
No crust flavor and not much else.
I wouldn’t come back.

Not sure how I managed to never been to BAR, but finally fixed that oversight. And so glad I did. That menu is amazing.
We had half clam casino/half potato pizza. And half red pie with sausage and jalapeños/half eggplant parm pizza. All mouthwatering!
And they carry vino verde (Portuguese wine) which I love. Can’t wait to go back!

Came in for the famous Mashed Potato Pizza. Very good actually, highly recommend if you are in town. Some of my colleagues were not in favor, taste is subjective. They had a great selection of freshly brewed beer. Had the bar lager, great deal! Atmosphere is a younger crowd.

A very easy way to lose customers, is for a bartender to comment on the absence of your tip. I tip when I want to tip, not because someone poured me a drink. FYI, we’re in the state of Connecticut, and so, by law all employees working in a tip-expected position MUST make at least minimum wage with their tips, if not then their employers must make up the difference. Please don’t make customers feel bad by disgracefully commenting on the lack of a tip. My family and I will look elsewhere for drinks and food.
