Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We were served by a lovely chap (Max/Matt) who informed us they weren't yet doing the 'eat out to help out' scheme even although we had seen it advertised on the HMRC website. Not sure why this was the case.
The food was ok. The 'crusty bread' accompanying the Cullen skink was limp cheap white sliced bread. The peas with the fish were weirdly minted something that goes with lamb not fish and although the tartare sauce tasted fresh it was overpowering. Sadly, although the fish looked great, it was on the greasy side.
Disappointingly the female who we asked for our bill was extremely abrupt and came across as if she would rather not be there. Such a shame as the young guy was polite and friendly, maybe over compensating for her rudeness. It's extremely unlikely we'll return here on our next visit to the Island.

Had lunch here while visiting
Millport on the Waverly! It was nice. Hand battered fresh fish, we asked for coleslaw instead of peas which wasn't a bother and we weren't charged any extra. My daughter had the homemade soup, which they done as a smaller portion and thoroughly enjoyed. We all had reasonably priced soft drinks and the service was fantastic. Nice window seat looking out to the sea, toilet and surroundings were very clean. Would recommend!

Myself and a group of friends decided to visit Millport for the afternoon for a run round the island on our bikes and to grab dinner. Once we arrived we decided to get some food in us first before taking a run round the island and getting our ferry home. Upon arrival, the staff were very nice, but told us that since we did not have a booking we were to sit outside; which honestly didn't bother us. We ordered food at the bar, then that's when the wait began. We were told that they had a backlog of checks which we didn't mind, despite the place not looking all that busy. An hour and a half for some bangers and mash seemed excessive though, especially since the mash was cold. The only reason we waited is because one of us somehow managed to get all of their food within half an hour, so we didn't even get to eat together! We were in hope that ours wouldn't be far behind. One of the waiting staff did very kindly take our picture, though. We won't be back.

After reading similar terrible experiences thought I would share the abuse me and my husband suffered from the manager and another member of staff as a result of politely complaining about the food we were served. Absolutely no customer service skills and unbelievably rude and this after years of being regular customers and friends with the former manager, we are very disappointed. Let’s wait and see how their business fares in the winter when all the day trippers stop coming and the locals take their business and spend their money elsewhere.

Walking round Cumbrae and popped in here for a drink. Really friendly staff the owner took time out for a chat (the also own the Clutha in Glasgow) great wee beer garden overlooking the harbour and the young guy taking the orders was cheery and joking. Didnt have any food but the aromas coming from the kitchen were amazing. A pleasant surprise was £3.90 for a pint of cold Guinness (1990 prices) Millport is one of those places always wanted to visit

I attended here with friends and family for a day out, when we first walked in there was a dog leash sitting on the table which we kindly handed to the manager which she responded to "that’s because this is a staff table which our staff likes to sit here” we then asked if it was a problem and if we could sit there which we were ignored, after sitting down as there was a large group of us I sat at a small table beside them with my son as there was not enough room which I got told to move and squeeze in beside everyone she then removed the table. After we ordered the food for everyone except my son due to his allergies he has his own sandwich I was told he was not aloud to eat it and must go outside and eat it who is 3 Years old I decided to leave with him. My friends stayed for their food which took over an hour to come out for the Manger to not bring out my cousins food which she said she forgot to put her order through. Absolutely shocking customer service they don’t know how to treat or speak to customers. while friends were waiting on food there was other people complaining too.

I cannot express in words my gratitude for the amazing people of Cumbrae island. When me and my friends got stranded in the island the owner, Craig, offered us free accommodation and hosted an unforgettable night for me and my friends, paired with a cozy breakfast and a delicious lunch. I cannot recommend this experience enough. I will be coming back during the summer and will be exited to rejoin the fun with the lovely people of Cumbrae island!

I went into the Royal George with my girlfriend for a drink before a cycle. We went up to the bar to order and we were greeted by a lady that got very angry just by looking at us and seeing someone " diffetent" than her. I was born and brought up in Glasgow but I an of Indian heritage and she was shouting at us as if we don't know English. However, I can guarantee that our English is 100 times better than her given the fact that my gf and I have 4 degrees between us!
It got worse when we sat down as the bar lady looked over at me and shouted " sanitize your hands and sign the book!" , at the top of her lungs. At that point I stood up and advised her that we did this o arrival. She then shouted " I'm not talking to you" in a very aggressive manner. Even if she wasn't, she was still being rude and aggressive to me. At that point I felt very uncomfortable and had to get up and leave due to her intimidating and aggressive tone. While leaving she then shouted again in even a more aggressive manner. I then replied by informing her that I heard her the first time. I have never experienced such vile aggression towards me since my days as a child living in Kirkhill. This ruined the entire day and left a terrible impression of both the Royal St George.

I had previously overva few weeks pror and the George now called the Millport Pier Hotel Bar/Restaurant was open to the general public. This time however there was a sign on the door. Only open to residents due to staff shortages. Bit disappointing.

We called in for an evening meal as we had been told the hotel was dog friendly. It certainly was, as is most of Millport! It was the main chefs night off so the menu was more limited. I had the Cajun chicken burger and hubby had fish and chips. Mine came with chips and coleslaw, his with garden peas. Both were excellent, cooked to perfection. The main chef has a lot to live up to!😁. The Guinness was also excellent. The new owners were so friendly and welcoming, (they’d only been there a month), and I get the impression that this pub will be going from strength to strength!

Never have I experienced such hospitality and kindness in my life. The venue is gorgeous, the island is incredible and when me and my friends found ourselves stranded for the night we were taken in by the owner of this wonderful establishment who treated us with such unconditional kindness. I cannot recommend visiting this beautiful island and staying at this hotel more, the people are all lovely and welcoming and the sunsets are to die for. I will for sure be back again to a place that treated me not like a stranger but like family.

We have been coming to Millport for many years and during that time 'The George ' has gone through some torrid times, however, no more. Craig and his family have transformed it into a thriving well run hotel, restaurant, music venue
and bar. We went for a family lunch on very busy Wednesday lunchtime. The service and food were excellent from start to finish. Congratulations to you all.

He a great lunch in here after walking round Cumbrae. I think it’s recently been taken over, as the service we had was 10/10, nothing like reviews for last year. Really friendly couple running the place, table service, food was great too. Really couldn’t fault, £30 for lunch which included a glass of wine and a pint. Perfect spot for lunch by the fire with friendly service: would recommend

Me and my husband came down to Millport for a couple of days. Both nights we ate in the pier hotel. Food was absolutely beautiful. Place was very clean, brilliant selection of drinks. The best thing was the staff ! All staff were so friendly and very helpful, especially the owners .
We’ll definitely be back.
