About
Our story starts in 1939 in a small coffee shop called Jerry’s. Fast forward a few decades, when we changed our name to Clayton’s to celebrate our shift to a full-service diner. We revamped our menu with the additions of home-cooked dishes, milkshakes, and smoothies, plus the walk-up taco counter right next door. We kept the nostalgic aspects, though -- from the original horseshoe counter and jukeboxes to the building itself, we represent a little piece of history. Everyone is welcome here, whether you’re a tourist from across the world or a local from a couple miles up the road. Our team is more than happy to serve you something classically delicious right here at Clayton’s!

This was, hands down, the best meal we had on Coronado. We went for breakfast on a Saturday and it was early enough that we only had a 10 min wait for two spots at the counter. The staff not only strictly masked, but enforced it for those waiting outside and there was plenty of space to social distance. Once we were seated, the fantastic team service began. No waitstaff walked near us without getting us drinks, refills, or asking if we needed anything. I had a simple breakfast of eggs, bacon, hash browns and gluten free toast. Most restaurants don’t offer any gluten free bread options, you just skip the toast, so I was pretty happy about that. My husband had the biscuits and gravy. Both breakfast were phenomenal. Every item was perfect. The atmosphere was fun and upbeat, even in these tough times. I just wish the waitstaff had name tags so I could give them a shout out by name.

Clayton's is THE place to eat while in Coronado. It will take you back in time with its loads of comfort food and home baked goodies. I have never had a bad meal at Clayton's. Even if you have to wait a bit to be seated (it's a rather small diner) it is definitely worth the wait! The staff is super friendly and always eager to please. Reminds me so much of the wonderful diner my grandmother used to own and operate.

Cute little breakfast place right on Orange Ave. They have seating out front and a patio in the back and in normal times seating inside. You order at the counter and they deliver the food and coffee to you. The service was great and they food was excellent Croque Madame is generous as was the breakfast wrap. That wrap had me full till dinner time. One our friends order the beignets special with lemon curd and they were fluffy and delicious served hot. All in all a great little find worth the wait in line. Would go here again for sure.

Probably the least expensive place in Coronado, food is pretty good. Long wait times on the weekends. Denied us service after a 45 min wait and after sitting us, with kids. Teenage hostess kept messing up the order in which people were supposed to be seated, but don't dare say anything, lest you endure the wrath of the overcompensating manager (calls himself Dren) who truly enjoys making a scene and listening to his own condescending voice. The hassle of unneccessarily waiting for a middle of the road food joint just isn't worth the novelty they're trying to hold onto. For an old-timey diner they seem to have a real 21st century sense of entitlement. Which is a shame, they make good French toast banana bread.

We saw this place a day before we went, while taking a walk in the town, it looked cute and we saw lots of people waiting for a table around bfast time. We returned next day and waited about 45 min for the table as it's very small.. We ordered a breakfast platter, bagel egg sandwich, these two were good. French toast it's very plain and greasy, hashbrowns were terrible... no flavor and just smashed cooked potatoes, pan fried and burnt. Coffee it's average too.

no, not at all impressed. due to covid you have to order at a small window on the street, and then we ended up waiting in the sun for the 3 sandwiches for an HOUR!!! but still, the milkshake wasn't made, so we waited another 15 minutes for that on top of the long wait. got to the beach just to find the one order was totally wrong, they gave us a bag with someone else's food, so I guess someone else would also be upset. won't be back for sure, it wasn't the hour plus wait worth. sorry.

I’m doing a second review because after one amazing breakfast at Claytons, we decided to come back each day the rest of the week. I gave them 5 stars the first review. This review is a four, as, while the food remained good, there was a noticeable drop off in the service as the week went on. Oddly, the servers were worse on Wed and Thursday. On Thursday, the day before we flew home, we had one more breakfast and wanted to get some take out for the next morning and the airport. 2 issues. The store was noticeably understaffed. There were only 2 servers actually working the counter while there were 2 drink people occasionally finding something to do. Then there were another couple of people who walked in and out, apparently doing inventory or getting ready for the lunch changeover. The 2 girls working were not hustling, and our waitress was downright clear (borderline rude) about not wanting to work that day. The service was problematic, just amazingly poor in comparison to what we saw Mon and Tues, and with less of a rush of customers. The issues appeared to be with the individuals, as the girls were different in different days and some worked harder and were more pleasant, period. There also was an obvious lack of management that could address any of this. Too bad, they were stars earlier.

While we're happy you were completely impressed during your first time with us, it's upsetting to hear that you didn't have the same impression with every visit. As you know, we're committed to providing all the best, and it's disappointing that you experienced differently. We're proud to have a team of hardworking individuals, and we can assure you that it isn't the norm and would appreciate it, if you didn't make assumptions of our staff and management based on the day of the week. This simply isn't the case. We have a level of expectation that happens every day, and we hold ourselves to that expectation everyday. That being said, we'll definitely talk as a team to make certain we're all providing the same level of service. Hopefully, when you're in the area again, you'll join us for another five-star visit. Respectfully, Andrew P., Director of Operations

Clayton's is a Coronado gem and has been for a long time. We always sit at the breakfast bar and have rarely waited. Service is always good and the servers attentive and pleasant. The food is wonderful. We have tried the Chorizo Scramble, the Ham scramble, the Florentine Benedict and the corned beef hash. All were wonderful. This is a great place to go!!!

I went in one morning for breakfast and the place was jumping. Only counter spaces open. I went in, spoke with the lovely man behind the counter and he suggested the waffles. Just what I needed for the day ahead. My waffle combo arrived quickly, best bacon I had ever had and fresh coffee. If you are a people watcher, this cute little place is where you should go. Locals and tourists alike, old and young elbow to elbow, chatting and starting their day off with a full belly. I will go back next time I visit

Celebrating my husbands birthday in Coronado Cal. Stopped at another restaurant for breakfast. They recommended Claytons. Old time diner feel. Had a delicious veggie, egg, crispy hash brown dish called Farmers Benedict. Definite must try if you are in the area. Our waitress was lackadaisical but the rest of the staff was warm friendly and very attentive. They also have homemade pies.

If you like seeking out good old diners Clayton’s is the place. Be prepared for a little wait, but it will be worth it. As you see the cinnamon rolls flow from the kitchen, order one to share with your table. You won’t be disappointed.

First night in Coronado and based on teviews we were excited to eat at Claytons and enjoy the 50s diner vibe. Waitstaff attentive and personable but the food was bad. My rueben was so tough I could hardly cut the corned beef much less chew it. Two bites and done. My husbands big burger looked delicious and well presented but beef lacked taste and tasted like beef had been frozen and microwaved...grey look. I did say I couldn't eat my sandwich and price was removed from bill and they brought out a donut and piece of pie for us. Pie ok but good donut. Maybe we just got a bad meal as there are so many people happy with this cafe.

Dog friendly, nice location, mediocre food, good malts. We stopped for lunch after reading good TA reviews. Bacon, tomato, grilled cheese was pedestrian, Rueben was same (tough meat, little flavor). Malts was tasty

It was crazy busy and we never felt rushed. The food stood up to the hype, we will be back! Along with alllllll the others! And our waiter was so nice, which is so hard to come by these days! He never acted annoyed if we asked for refills or anything even when he had 4 plates in his hands

We've been coming to Coronado for years and progressively have added children to the mix. As a family of 5, Clayton's still offers a great atmosphere! Its a classic diner with really good meals - anything you get. We went all 4 days that we stayed on the island this trip, we love their walk up window, ate outside one day, and ate inside two days. There are so few "classic diners" in America and its absolutely worth a trip.
