Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The most delectable cakes with enough variety to suit everyone. Lovely lunch menu - everything cooked and baked on site and on the day means you always have a stunningly delicious meal. Their coffee's pretty good too.
When visiting Simons Town, The Sweetest Thing really is one of the must visits!

This is one of those gems that should not be kept a secret. Every pastry that walks out of Doreen’s kitchen is a taste sensation and a work of art. The ingredients are all carefully sourced and the skill of perfection is in the tasting. It’s everybody’s favourite meeting place for business or otherwise . It’s big enough to have privacy as it has three different areas and on a warm day the courtyard is a reminder of the historical charm in Simonstown buildings.

We stopped in here for a treat of hot beverage and cake. The decaffeinated latte and hot chocolate were excellent and the homemade cheesecake was delicious. Service excellent and friendly. Lovely courtyard at the back. Plenty of seating inside and out.

We went there for a breakfast. We sat down in front by the window display and two ladies behind the counter ignored us. We had to wave at them to get them to come over. I asked them if it was self service and they looked confused. Anyway we ordered and waited & waited & waited. I counted the customers - 3 tables and a total of 8 customers. We ordered an omelette and eggs benedict. We also had a tea and coffee. At no stage did they ask if we need a refill or if we were enjoying our meal. They stood behind the counter counter and chatted the whole time. Again we had to wave like mad to get our bill. At R280 we were a bit surprised. On looking closer we discovered that the coffee was R55 and the cheese for the omelette was an extra R28! There were no menus, just a badly presented chalkboard which we had to get up and read on the other side of the shop. The sign was behind a table with two customers which made us all a bit uncomfortable. The walls and light fittings had not been cleaned in years (thick dust) and the place felt dirty. Overall a rip-off, terrible service and bad experience. There was no sign of a manager/owner to complain to. When I asked about seeing a manager the two staff they just shrugged and said nothing. What a disappointment as the little town is lovely.

We often go to this place on our way after a nice long walk in beautiful Simonstown and environs. The pastries are absolutely wonderful - world class in presentation and flavour. The service from the ladies at the counter/coffee station , on the other hand is abysmal. They do not welcome one, in fact they are downright off hand and rude. They seem to not want to be disturbed at all. When having breakfast, the ladies who serve the tables are very nice and go as fast as they can, but it always takes a long time.

I went to try this place after members of my family gave it a rave review as a place for breakfast. Up front I will say that the eggs benedict and coffee that I had very very good and were produced reasonably quickly. But the whole thing was spoilt by the fact that the staff seem to think that wearing masks is not really necessary. Staff working at food counters, carrying food to tables and putting out pastries for sale were either wearing no masks at all or had them pulled down. I asked one lady who served me to put her mask on and she did but 3 minutes later it was off again as she worked at a food counter. What is more there was no sign of any sanitisier anywhere in the restaurant. This is the reason for my poor rating - the owner / manager needs to discipline his staff on Covid related matters very quickly.

On your right, as you first drive into Simonstown from the Chapman’s Peak end, this place is delicious ! OK - it could do with at bit more style and atmosphere once inside, but there’s no doubting the taste & quality of the goods on offer ! The homemade lemonade - tangy and a definite thirst quencher - was a hit and the chocolate creation was only marginally eclipsed by the excellence of the custard tart ! Friendly and attentive service sealed the deal !

We are on holiday in Simon’s Town and have visited The Sweetest Thing on a number of occasions now. I can safely say that I have never experienced such delicious food any where else in South Africa and beyond - it is all homemade and baked on the premises. All hot food is prepared to order - mutton and rosemary pie is simply wonderful for a lunchtime treat. The desserts are to die for as my photo shows. Doreen and her team work extremely hard - thank you!

We had breakfast and best pastries I have eaten! They are pretty busy so relax and a dose of patience is helpful. All ladies, serving and behind the counter were super friendly. Suggest go early in the morning to miss the crowds in peak season

We make a point of visiting this little cafe every time we are in Cape Town and have never ever been disappointed. From a simple dish of scrambled eggs, to their supreme lamb pie, and all the exquisite pastries and cakes to chose from, we have enjoyed every morsel of their very delicious fare. You won't find better in Cape Town at the price, so if you are in Simonstown that should be your food destination,

From the outside this looks like any other Cafe. This all changes when you examine the array of Sweet and Savoury pastries on show -all baked daily.
Visiting later in the day can be a problem as a lot of favourites are sold out.
There is nothing to equal this venue in the western cape or indeed a lot of other countries either.

This is a regular stop for us when driving round the Cape via Simons Town. They do tend to sell out early so be quick. Fantastic home made cake and pastries that we take out. A little pricey but you get what you pay for.

Beautiful moist choc cake, very good coffee. Very friendly staff. Only downside, small outside eating area, close to commuters. Takeaways are well boxed and hygiene is top notch. Highly recommend.
