Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This Koji restaurant on Evans Street, Timaru has been closed for many months. It was responsible for all the great reviews and deservedly so. There is another restaurant named Koji across from Speight's Ale House on the other side of town, which appears to be...claiming this listing. They are not the same. The images on this listing are from the now-closed Koji. I believe this is deceitful and an attempt to cash-in on the excellent reputation of the former, now-closed restaurant.More

We had a great night here with a group of 16 (children/teens/adults). Heaps of delicious food and a couple of rounds of drinks all for approx $750. Janet was our waitress for the majority of the night and she was awesome, and the chef cooking...on the hot plates in front of us was very accommodating to the young ones who loved the flames. They provided a gluten free menu also.More

Excellent food. Would pay to book as we were lucky to get a table the night we popped in and took a chance. Very nice service.

Koji Japanese buffet restaurant never fails to disappoint. Tonight we came for dinner for early Mother's day with my parents who are from out of town and never been before. The staff were really friendly and special mention must be made of Samantha who was...so friendly, helpful and smiley. The other the staff who served us drinks and brought us food were also friendly. The food was so delicious and as usual ordered too much. Thanks again! We'll be back...again!More

My beef hotplate was DELICIOUS but mixed reviews from friends on their meals. The salad had way too much mayo! Nicer water jugs instead of plastic would be appreciated.

We tried the lunch and dinner buffets and the dinner was better with more varieties of food. The beef, shrimp and ice cream were very good. The service was good and everybody was relaxed and cheerful. It was packed during the dinner time and the...buffet was recommended despite it wasn't cheap, NZ$43/person.More

We have been in this restaurant probably about 3 times in the past 10 years while stopping in Timaru for the night. On our 4th visit, we noticed that the quality of the food has declined over the years. We asked the waitress if they...can substitute the Terriyaki sauce for soya sauce instead ( as didn’t like the sweet Terriyaki sauce), she said “NO”. Then we asked if we have the hot plate option, can the Chef not put any cabbage in it , again the answer was “NO”. Totally inflexible in their cooking . What we finally ordered was really below standard and not really a true Japanese meals. Disappointed and will NOT come back to this restaurant again .More

The food is fantastic and there is a great verity. Servers were a bit hard to understand at times. A bit on the pricey side tho for the buffet.

We first sat down and the table was very sticky. We had ordered our meals, the rest of the people I was with got their meals and I received my dumplings when everyone was just about finished. They weren’t cooked very well either. I think...they had been forgotten because I had to ask. The rest of the people I was with enjoyed their meal but it wasn’t very hot. This restaurant has nicer facilities than the other Kōji in Timaru. Although the other Kōjis food is fresher and better cooked.More

Staff were nice, service was good but the quality of food was not great. Rice was dry, the Unagi too rubbery and the salmon not that fresh. Taste of flavours was good enough but overall just not to my high standards when it comes to...Japanese food.More
