Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My husband had the seafood chowder and he said it was the best he had ever tasted. It was so thick and creamy and steaming hot 10 out of 10

Google maps said that it was in Burnett Street and near Cass Street. I drove down Burnett Street and us 4 didn't see a road sign. I drove around the block down Cass Street and one of my passengers saw the sign about half way...up the side of the building. I was with a group of friends and we all agreed that the service and meals were worth the wait. Would we go there again? Definitely!More

we have been travelling the south isle for 4 weeks and went back to Speights Ashburton for our last lunch in NZ because we loved it the first time. Great food and great service. I loved the pork belly while my wife loved having the...pasta and particularly being offered a small portion, great for her. Definitely recommend this restaurant. Our award for best waitress in NZ south isle goes to Jas. I said to her she must have ESP for whenever we wanted another drink or more food she was at our table asking if we needed anything. She was happy, personable and professional. She made both of us feel that the restaurant was a cut above the rest due to her efforts. Thanks very muchMore

Food isnt too bad, the roast beef was well cooked. Waited for over an hour and a half for our meal to arrive!! Were only told there was an issue after an hour went by, others had to leave but we bravely waited and waited...and waited. Only offered no charge on our drinks, which were all soft drinks and then I was given the wrong dessert. Hate to think what the dinner situation will be like if this was lunch. Better communication would be a big help.More

We arrived here yesterday, Mother’s Day, a traditionally busy day for all restaurants. The staff were lovely and squeezed us in to a to a two-person table. The toilets were lovely and clean. The tables were wiped down after every patron left, cleanliness was apparent...as was a welcoming atmosphere. I had the lamb’s fry and bacon with a big helping of mash potato, which was lovely and hot. My daughter had the veggie burger which had halloumi and she declared it to be delicious. It also came with chips. We shared a sticky date pudding which came with cream , ice cream and caramel sauce. It was a baked pudding rather than a steamed sticky date, but it was delicious. The girls were kind enough to ask what size cup I wanted my chai latte in. I would highly recommend a visit.More

Sunday lunch was yummy with Prawns in Pasta sauce. Very tasty and creamy sauce with lots of prawns. Struggled to eat it all. The atmosphere in Speights was rustic and very nice. Staff were great and the company awesome. So good that I was on...my own and went back for a Rainbow Bowl which was yummy too. Again great staff and ambience.More

Stopped in for lunch and was pleasantly surprised by what a great choice we made. My Husband has become a Speight’s Beer fan and Wendy suggested I try a sample of their Cider as I am usually a wine drinker. After a small sip, I...ordered a pint of their Cider and was very happy, it was much better than the Angry Orchard Cider served in America. Their Cider is light and fruity tasting! The food was equally fabulous, the meat just fell off the spare ribs with a great sauce that melted in my mouth and the coleslaw was delicious! My husband loved his steak sandwich, he said it was much better than he has had elsewhere. The dessert menu looked great, but we were too full. This was a great stop for lunch and it would be great for a date night dinner! The restaurant is wonderfully decorated and ask to sit in Wendy’s section, she will steer you the right way through your menu choices and she is so accommodating. We highly recommend this restaurant!More

An excellent place to stop for refreshment and meal between Timaru and Christchurch, just off the Main Street, parking outside the door. Service was quick and friendly, the food of a very high standard and I would definitely recommend this establishment.

Right from the 1st phone call to book in they did the little extras. We were asked if it was a special occasion (nephews 21st) there was a happy birthday balloon on the table. The food was beautifully cooked and even though it seemed to...take a little time (it was quite busy) to my brother in law’s annoyance lol it was delicious. But what truly made our meal out so memorable was the staff that served us they were exceptional. Our waitress was brilliant very polite and attentive also when the birthday boy’s dessert came out there was a candle in it and she started the singing(much to the embarrassment of my nephew) of happy birthday. I would highly recommend speights ale house in Ashburton and looo forward to dining there again.More

Holy heck, where to start!! We went in not expecting very much being an alehouse but boy were we very wrong. The restaurant layout was very cool, the service amazing from everyone that worked there and the food was incredible! I had the lamp rump...which was beautiful and tender and my partner had the chicken schnitzel which was equally has yummy. My partner and I have been on the road for week, traveling from auckland to Ashburton and we can't tell you enough how nice it was to have a real homely delicious meal!! The dessert platter for Valentines Day was also absolutely scrumptious! Thank you Speights Alehouse Ashburton - if we are back down this way again we will definitely be back! XMore
