Although it’s been in our neighbourhood for ages now, for some reason we weren’t drawn to Cheek and Chong, even though this cuisine is right up our alley. Bit the bullet and went last night, so glad we did! We had the Popcorn Prawns and their special Soft Shell Crab steamed (Bao) bun and the Beef Cheek Massaman Curry and Sweet and Sour Pork Belly. Everything was really flavourful, Our highlights were the Bao bun and the Massaman Curry. Please could you put more sauce with the popcorn prawns, the smear on the bowl was too small. We had two cocktails each, again really flavourful. All up the meal cost $166.00 which we were happy with, great service all night, great flavours and portion sizes. Will be back.

No matter what you decide to order, it'll be tasty! We had a selection of small plates and some of the larger meals (Half Duck) Our group of 6 adults all raved about the deliciousness being served up. Special mention to the ribs! wow, and special mention to those wok fried greens!!! yum! More so, amazing staff, food was served up quickly and of course the decor was just as detailed as the flavours. Highly recommend and we look forward to coming back :)

This corner restaurant is a busy place (and for good reason) so it pays to book ahead. Our second visit was just as good as the first, always a great sign of consistent quality. It's an excellent place to share dishes and has a solid drinks list, moreover if you're the driver or prefer no alcohol the Asahi Zero beer simply can't be beaten, best I've ever tried. Dishes that are a must include the popcorn prawns and the kafir lime chicken but the true standout is a genius dish (I've never eaten better) and a fantastic surprise - the Egg Plant Chips (yes an unassuming name) they're just outstanding. Go try them for yourself I guarantee you'll be smiling after the first bite. Only negative was the Crispy Hapuka (Groper) Curry, for the size of the dish it was over priced and on this occasion over done as well.

We love that Orewa has a restaurant like this, the food is great and our family has been more than 10 times sometimes on our own and sometimes with other friends as we have always recommended it. The problem is the service, there is always a huge issue with seating us outside if there is more than four of us, we are normally there early with our kids so the restaurant is always empty we are always greeted as if we are an annoyance for asking to sit outside (even if we book and request outside in the reservation) and because there is only one large table which is often booked for later and they refuse to put others tables together. Management often says it's not possible for us to even sit outside despite the restaurant being empty, after all of this often it's still empty when we actually leave. It's baffling, most restaurants are happy to see us arrive and will go out of their way to accommodate their customers, even if it takes a bit of juggling - these guys are not, today was consistently the same. After a lot of negotiation we were seated in the outside table which was booked later in the night. We left well before they said we were supposed to be out (as we promised) however there was absolutely no service, we had to go to the bar and order and generally felt we were just an annoyance. Hundreds spent later and the food was still great but a bad taste was left in our mouths. This restaurant seems so caught up in themselves they have forgotten who actually pays the bills - that's the customer and it's starting to wear a bit thin.

We went on a busy Saturday night table of six.Seated quickly, serving staff were friendly but obviously trying to manage too many tables. We couldn't hear any conversations around the table or even what teh waitress was saying. We waited quite a while for drinks. The menu is extensive and we understood that you get the food when you get it, but starters or smalls came out at varying times, with one main course thrown in. rice was served during the starters. Then four more mains came out leaving the last large meal to be served a longtime after everyone else had finished. rice was stone cold and been there for thirty minutes. We understand the concept but really dont think it works. Food when we got it was of a very high standard but expensive for the portion size. Only two of large meals would have been sufficient to share if you wanted too. Sadly we wont be back.

Given this place a good rating many times before but for the past two times we have had nothing but shocking customer service! Lunch seating was not that busy they tried to shove us practically in the front entrance without nearly any room to manoeuvre in between! When asked if we could sit somewhere a little bit quieter we were practically scowled at ...the inside restaurant was very empty ..we waited 20 minutes for two drinks ...we watched them eventually sit them on top of the bar with so many others and we then waited and waited! To open a bottle of beer and one soda water was surely not that technical! Food was amazing (credit to the chefs) but everyone running around looking highly grumpy and no time for customers shows quite clearly! We honestly felt like we were in the way not how you should be treated as we the customers are actually paying your wages! We are local retailers our self but will not be supporting this business any more our money is better spent elsewhere! If the gentleman serving tables is the manager then you should be trying to bring this place back to what it was like when you first opened!

Food was cooked well and tasty so no complaints there. Service wasn’t fantastic. I asked if an item off the menu could be adjusted slightly and the waitress asked the chef but then took about 15 minutes to come back so I could reorder (the answer was no). Wait time a bit long.

Family member got stuck in bathroom due to faulty bathroom handle preventing door from opening. After 30 minutes, door finally opened. For Health & Safety reasons, they should have called for help and had keys on hand. They only offered “free drinks” and “dessert” after we complained, which was refused because our main meals were cleared from our table while we sorted this incident meaning we did not even get to finish our main meal. Avoid!

We booked a few weeks ago for a table of 8. On the evening it was stifling hot and requested an option of sitting outside, which we were told were all reserved. It felt like it was a 'take your pick of the larger tables' inside, which we did (did we really need to 'reserve' a table?). There was very little air circulating and we had asked about it before the rest of our party arrived. It could be useful to have an updated option on your reservation portal for the seating preference. As I was sent a reservation reminder, this could have easily been updated to verify this request. The staff were great (warm drinking water was served, which wasn't that pleasant! (Not sure if that's a marketing ploy to buy drinks from the venue), food was great and the extra orders were organised quite quickly. We all agreed, the menu has been the same for 2 years and probably needs a review.

I had my 30th birthday dinner here last night with a group of about 20 family and friends. My expectations were pretty high as a few friends had raved to me about how amazing the food is. It did not disappoint! Everything was incredible. We ordered share plates so that everyone was able to try a range of different things. I tried the kingfish sashimi, wagyu steamed bun, soft shell crab steamed bun, crispy skin duck and ribs. All were to die for! I also have to mention our amazing waitress. A young girl named Kyla. She was fantastic and she went out of our way to find something that my father in law was able to eat due to his strict diet. She's definitely an asset to the place as it meant the service we received was on par with the beautuful food. Best place to have my birthday dinner! I can't wait to come back again.

We have always enjoyed both the food and the location of this restaurant and have eaten here many times. However we have noticed that the portion sizes have become significantly smaller. For example, we ordered the Hapuka Curry last night. It was very nice as usual, however 5 bite sized pieces of fish on the dish which is one of the most expensive on the menu (@$36) seemed a bit expensive to us. No complaints about the food which is all nice, but in our opinion too expensive for the size of the dishes.

I really want to give Cheek and Chong six stars. If they installed some acoustic damping, I'd go to seven! A group of 13 of us visited and had their Hoi An set menu. At $70pp it sounded pricey, however it turned out to be very good value as the food just seemed to keep on coming. the dishes were many and varied with one constant: they were all fantastically delicious! We found the staff to be friendly and helpful, not to mention attentive without being over-bearing. The only negatives are that the wine prices are pretty steep and the noise level is deafening. Would I go again? Oh, YES! I was informed prior that a booking would be essential - I can see why..

Pricey but food is average. We ordered stir fried veges and greens and it came in swimming in oyster and soya sauce and very salty. The Hapuka curry was even more salty and the fish did not taste fresh. The duck fried rice was very greasy and the side rice @ $4.00 per bowl was very soggy. Won't be back.

I think the food is best shared with a group of friends, so you get to taste more of the delicious dishes. I certainly got some inspiration for my humble home cooking. So good to have the variety of cuisines available in our country! Our bill for four people was substantial, but we think that it was met with value for money.

This restaurant does not offer anything for children and no Fries. The portions are very small 4 chicken wings for $17. With no prep in the wings just deep fried. No garnish. The squid was off. We asked for dressings and sauces to be in the side. This did not happen. We aware charged a 15% service charge on a Sunday. This was not a bank holiday and possibly illegal. Although it was a public holiday in the following Monday. There are many choices for food in Orewa. Keep walking past this one.
