Great food with great service

We made a reservation for dinner and when we arrived we saw that they already had a 20+ person table. We expected slow service, but the staff worked super hard and still friendly. They really pulled it off, and we did not have to wait long to get some great food. Lovely big portions too. Thanks for the great evening. Best food in town we tasted

Cosy venue

This is probably the best dining in ohukane. Cosy atmosphere, log fire, homely good quality food with friendly service. Ordered the parsnip soup and garlic ciabatta to start, good flavours and served hot. Salmon with lemon butter sauce with spinach was good however found the spinach a bit watery and soggy, i think broccolini/baby carrots would work better, still all v delicious.

We visited this restaurant for dinner after biking the Old Coach Road and hiking in the area. This place had the best table service on our trip, although it is a casual, family friendly place. We both ordered the venison dinner and it was excellent, cooked perfectly and accompanied with potatoes au gratin and red cabbage and beets. There was enough sauce served with the dish; one of our criticisms of many meat dishes is that you never get enough sauce! The Cyprus Tree is absolutely gluten-free friendly and our recommendation.

Overpriced and underwhelmed

Food was very average for the price - pub grub that is ok for circa $40 a meal, then having to add sides - another $10 for a small bowl of boiled potatoes that were on the menu as roast potatoes. Service was poor, took own empty drinks to bar to give the hint we may want more and still had to ask twice. They weren't even busy. Really disappointed when our table of 10 would have spent over $700. Felt ripped off.

Allergen safety concerns

Disappointing meal. Two members in the group had cold vegetables. Mose concerning was for the ceoliac disease sufferer in the party. I booked ahead of time and notified that my daughter has ceoliac disease. Upon arrival we consulted the menu and discussed options with our waitress. She pointed out everything marked GF on the menu was safe. I noted the fries were GF... great we thought, seperate fryer. We were advised no separate fryer. Under the kids food were meatballs and spaghetti, GF it noted. I was informed that the meatballs were no longer GF as they had changed supplier but not the menu. We settled on steak, roast potatoes and broccolini. This was served with gravy in separate jug. I sought clarification from the waitress that the gravy was GF. She went to the kitchen to ask. Then the waitress and another woman rushed to the table and shouted at our daughter to stop eating as the food wasn't safe and was cross contaminated. The broccolini I believe they said had been cooked in pasta water. They removed her meal. They prepared another meal for our daughter which she ate sometime later alone as we had all finished. A concerning number of issues here, despite many many times reiterating ceoliac disease.

I totally agree we failed your daughter. We did not set out to make her or your evening the massive disappointment that it was and we are very sorry. I don’t want to come across as making excuses. But I do believe you deserve an explanation. The meatballs we normally use are out of stock, which meant we needed to use an alternative product. I am the owner and head chef, but as our head waitress was off with an injury I needed to go to out the front to help which meant a new employee wasn’t watched to the same level. I went straight back into the kitchen after this and we didn’t take anymore people than had booked to ensure we didn’t have another incident. They are all given allergen training and we have gone over this again with the team and what repercussions it could have for our customers. Although training is so important we find working alongside our team more important to ensure quality and safe practices until we are completely satisfied they understand our systems. Thank you for communicating clearly the allergy you did your part and we did not so once again we are very sorry.

Delicious food but condescending staff with a poor attitude ruined our visit

We got in just before the rush it seems and were told where to sit and were told that the table was booked in an hour or so but she said, "You'll be finished by then"... We didn't feel welcomed from when we walked in by the management/owners and it it felt strictly business... Take our money as quick as possible and get rid of us. The floor staff seemed more peasant but were quite quick to try take plates off the table, I had to take my plate back at one point. When I went to play I was rudely dismissed with, "we've only 1 till, go there to pay" and I joined a line of very confused people. The food however was delicious, absolutely amazing but unfortunately we wont be back

I’m very sorry I made you feel this way, this was not my intention. School holidays are the busiest two weeks of the year and we figure the other restaurants are in the same boat, so we will try to squeeze people in if we can so they don’t miss out on a table in town. We let people know prior so they have the choice to stay, even though it is more rushed than our booked tables. We are definitely not about taking peoples money as quickly as possible but as the restaurant was fully booked we did have a time constraint for those who hadn’t booked as it would’ve been unfair to make the people who’d booked your table to wait. Our team do a great job and there are times it is high pressure but we’ll try harder to not let this come across. So glad you enjoyed the food. Enjoy the rest of your Ohakune holiday.

Shocking service, misleading pudding, no tap beer

Went just for a dessert, 3 in our group ordered the so called ‘Sticky Date Pudding’ but it had sultanas in it, not dates! They didn’t even finish it as it was not what they wanted & it was $15 each. The waitress was very rude, when one of us went up to the bar just to order a beer, she said that they’re not serving drinks from the bar & that you have to have a table assigned to you in order to get a drink. This is unacceptable as this establishment is a restaurant & bar. On top of this, the pump for the tap beer was broken, so no tap beers were available. Don’t bother going here. We won’t be.

We take reviews very seriously and use them to improve our business, but this is the first time someone has said that’s there’s sultanas (there is not) in the sticky date pudding and the feed back we constantly receive is that it is an amazing desert! I can only come to the conclusion it was not to your personal taste. I don’t know where you got the idea we’re a bar, as we have no bar seating, our liquor license states we are a restaurant (if you are a bar your liquor license states you are a tavern), we don’t have a bar person in the summer season, and the wait person makes your drinks, and we don’t have a bar menu, just the full dinner menu. As we have such a compressive selection of drinks it is quicker to look at the drinks menu and order from your table, and as we are a restaurant we pride ourselves in looking after our customers and not expecting them to constantly head to the bar for a drink. The pump for the tap beer has been ordered but we couldn’t do this until the 11th of January when they reopened. We are sorry for the inconvenience but it is really beyond our control. We’re very thankfully that our customers over this busy period have been understanding. I hope people make their own decision on the fact we sit as one of the highest restaurants on trip advisor, and positive reviews we receive constantly.

Came for the family friendly atmosphere, wowed by food and service

Honestly we were convinced to try this place by the fact that they had a kids play area, and would’ve been fine with average food. Instead we were blown away by some of the best gnocchi I’ve ever had and perfectly cooked crispy skinned salmon. Service was kind and friendly and they catered to my daughter’s allergies with minimal fuss. After several days of traveling and eating out it was so refreshing to have a kids menu that wasn’t just nuggets and chips. Kids loved their meatball pastas. Highly recommend this place for families. We loved everything about it.

Love this place! We came a few years ago & so came back! The woman who took our orders was so friendly & helpful. I needed Gluten Free & she was really helpful in assisting me with menu items to consider. The bar tender (maybe owner) was awesome last time and again this time! Fantastic cocktails (You MUST try “The Big Apple”) 😊 thanks again for a great evening and delicious meals all around!

Great beer and chips. Stop there. Venison stew on Yorkshire pudding was cold and obviously microwaved and made the Yorkshire tough. Not value for money even if staff were cheerful. You need value for money now guys.

A very nice dinner

Great atmosphere. The service was excellent. Food very nice loved the pumpkin peanut puree and the roast veggies were fab but the pork belly was a little dry. Husbands mushroom risotto was very nice. Would go back and try the tapas as they looked really good.

I had came by for dinner and they were quite busy. I was lucky enough to get a table without booking this time as they were full the other time I tried. They have a range of drinks and food. Instead of grabbing a main, I ended up trying three different tapas-style starters to be able to try more items on the menu. What really got my attention was the Yorkshire pudding with venison and tarragon stew. I also went with the pork ribs and the fried chicken. The venison stew was really nice. The Yorkshire pudding wasn't as crispy as I like but it was nice with the stew. The fried chicken was also quite nice. The ribs were ok but I did like the onion rings on top. I ended the meal with the coconut tapioca pudding, which was nice even though it was topped with passion fruit and pea tendrils. the pineapple gel at the bottom was interesting since it was almost like a jelly but it did give an interesting flavour and a nice textural difference from the tapioca. It was a nice place for dinner. The menu was interesting and the ambience was nice. It is easy to see why they are usually packed. Booking is a must if you do want to eat there. They also have a parking lot around the back too.

OMGosh - loving the salmon dish here. My 4th time and I still love it. I know that one day I will have to try the other items 😉 but until then, I’ll stick with my Delish salmon 👍 My husband had the lamb rump and that was such a winner too. Great service and lovely setting.

After a very long trip went for dinner and was happy with the service. Had the lamb and was super impressed, was still so succulent and flavoursome. Roasted potatoes were bite size and smothered in a type of buttery cheese sauce, whatever it was made me do my “happy hungry wiggle” Whittaker’s chocolate brownie and vanilla ice cream for dessert - wow!! Perfect balance between hot and cold and plain and decedent. Ambiance was cosy, even though a large family group with several teenagers enjoying the games were there at the same time, but there was enough space between tables to provide privacy. Wait staff were very amenable, polite and patient super friendly and attentive. Proud of their town and heritage. Will recommend. Thanks for tea

We came here on reading the previous reviews. The restaurant itself was very pretty and pleasant and the staff friendly and efficient. However the food was very pricey for what it was, which was particularly disappointing. The steak at $38 was both pricey and chewy, and the belly pork crackling soft and not crunchy. The kids however enjoyed playing foose ball which proved to be the highlight of the night.
