Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I stumbled into Sonja's while cycling along in windy heat, desperate for some cool refreshment. I received that, and much more. A friendly low key chat, introduction to Sonja's amazing garden , several fruits and foods to sample and an invitation to snorkel/swim from her...back beach. All of which I took up. Aitutaki, sadly to say ,on the whole... is a dive at the moment. * Especially the lagoon resort hotel...) Not helped by most of the local's very clear treatment of one as a reluctantly tolerated outsider, most appreciated for the dollars they might bring in . ( There were a tiny few exceptions..Sonja being one) There is no doubt that Sonja and her complex are no longer in their hey dey, but echos of it abound. And the warmth and welcome are as large as ever. If I could I would have happily stayed on as a WOOFER helping to tame the incredibly rich oasis she has cultivated...sadly I couldn't, but maybe next time. Definitely worth several visits, and/ or a stay.More

No visit to Aitutaki should go without a visit to the amazing Sonja who has the most amazing organic fruit and vegetables. Her world famous Breadfruit Lasagna has to be tasted to be believed how delicious it is. And Sonja is so artistic and enormously...entertaining and kind.More

I had high expectations despite a not very good reputation amongst the locals....but was very disappointed. Crazy prices, produce not great. Better to give your money to local native sellers.

Interesting that your review is of a day Tauono's was closed as I was overseas.

We stumbled across this place just walking along the beach at lunchtime. We met the owner, Sonja, one of the most interesting people you will meet. She manages a large organic garden in paradise. The café is closed, but she sells her marvelous produce and...whatever she has cooked or baked that day. We bought breadfruit lasagne (in a coconut creme), coconut cake, fruit salad, and some spicy salsa. Everything is so fresh and delicious and healthy! DO go for the food and the experience!More

The place has gone downhill terribly since our last visit, maybe due to the owner's poor mental health - According to locals we spoke to. frozen bread? No thanks bad fruit? No thanks. bread fruit lasagna was like slop.

Problem in Aitutaki is if you are cooking at your villa that i) grocery stores suck big time ii) they are very expensive (hey 1 cauliflower nzd15) and iii) restaurants inthe island are nothing special. The solution is to give Sonja a visit. The breadfruit...lasagne is divine so if she has that, you need to buy it. In additiom she will have great selection of organic fruits and vegetables as well as sauces like pesto and baba ganoush for takeaway. If the car is there, she is open!More

We've come here for our last few trips to pick up wonderful seasonings and fresh veggies. Tauono was the epitome of the aware islander who appreciated his surroundings and the abundance of natural foods on the island and in the lagoon. Sonja continues this practice...while adding her own abundant knowledge of cooking and baking. Outstanding food and an Aitutaki treat.More

This lady is amazing! Had the lasagna (breadfruit instead of pasta) and it was very good. Also tried the coconut cake for dessert, great! We were very impressed with this option for dinner. So much so, my wife bought her book from the resort.

Don’t be scared off by the overgrown garden or small unpolished house - it is one of the best places on Aitutaki for fresh fruit and vegetables. It is run by a wonderful elderly lady Sonja from Austria who have lived on Aitutaki for +22...years. Her late husband was a local and she has stayed to grow a paradise garden. Get fresh fruit, cakes, home made meals (also take away fresh or frozen) and if you can do her cooking class! A wonderful experience. Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty! Also if you like to help out, she is getting older and welcomes a hand in the garden or on building projects from volunteers- be an angel and help her out!More

After many decades Sonya has called it quits on the cafe but her cookbook is for sale at here or in most Cafes around town. She offers a cooking class using her organic produce, got for the breadfruit lasagne and ice cream banana salsa with...breadfruit chips, fresh and amazing taste. You will also learn how to make coconut milk/cream. The fruit/veg is picked daily from her garden and is very reasonably priced. The passion fruit and custard apples were favourites.More

Although Sonja has closed her lunch time business, she has a fresh fruit market going every day. Sonja also runs small cooking classes, I highly recommend the experience. This is a once in a life time experience to get to cook ingredients that are specific...to the islands! Sonja has her own cook book! We made the bread fruit lasagna, including making our very own coconut milk!! It was an amazing experience.More

We had heard this place was worth a visit for a fine lunch. We went there and met Sonya who said she was easing out of the lunch business - not able to find enough help these days. However, she teaches cooking (I wish we'd...known, but now you do!) and suggested we stay to have her breadfruit lasagne that she'd prepared earlier as part of a class. What an amazing dish and salad. The flavors were amazing. Sonya sat with us and told us stories of the island, her own experiences, and of the amazing fruits that she has in her own yard - examples of every fruit on the island apparently. If you want a culinary note to brighten your trip - find Sonya and eat something unique. Without doubt the highlight of our whole trip!More

They grow all sorts of veggies fruits and herbs. Its a great place to check out if your Aitutaki diet is starting to feel a bit bland and repetitive. They also do take away or dine in meals. The bread fruit lasagna is delicious.
