East India Room is the restaurant in the Raajkutir complex within Swabhumi. Right from entry, the experience is different from that of a usual restaurant in a hotel. Set out at the far end of a courtyard, the ambience of the place is reminiscent of colonial architecture and interiors, with neoclassical furniture, but maintained to perfection unlike some of the real colonial era clubs of Kolkata. The speciality of the house seems to be Indian dishes with a European twist, which I would like to fancy that the khansamas might have concocted for their European masters; but I wouldn’t vouch for it as I am not a food historian. But what was on table was delectable. The Jali Kabab and Dhakai Morog Polao were fascinating, but Lobster Thermidor was as mundane as served in many other places. The staff was extremely courteous and made the whole experience a memorable one: right from the beginning we appreciated being allowed to sit where we chose, helping in selecting the dishes suiting members of family with diverse taste and restrictions and finally arranging a special exit route which was easier than the usual front entrance. I wish to return soonest.

Colonial culture well scripted here. Staff behavior makes it special. Culinary experts value individual palate. Camera is must to carry as you will be mesmerized with the ambience and decor

My wife has several food allergies including gluten, seafood, mushrooms, many fruits, vegetables and oils. Preparing food for her in a restaurant environment free from cross contamination can be quite a challenge. We contacted Raj Kutir hotel and they passed us on to Jaydeep at the restaurant. He put us thru to Chef Suvashish Mukherjee. Mr. Mukherjee happily took on the challenge to device a special 3 course menu from scratch for my wife within a couple of hours. We visited the restaurant on Feb 10th and boy what an experience we had. Chef Suvashish, Chef Biswarup, their Manager Mr. Samim along with Jaydeep, Manoj and Azizul made us feel special, took excellent care of us ensuring a complete contamination free superb dining experience. The food was eclectic and the hospitality was probably the best we experienced so far in life. We’re going to stay at Raj Kutir on our next visit to Kolkata. In summary, the entire experience felt like homecoming. Way to go Raj Kutir and East India room. You guys rock!

Me along with my family and friends visited this place to celebrate my sis-in-laws bday lunch, who has come all the way from Mumbai. My wife did the booking for last sunday, 21st of August and the booking executive acted so pricey as if it was totally packed and there would be hardly any seats. We were 11 pax with senior citizens and kids. When we entered around 1.30pm it was absolutely empty. Anyways, the interiors were done up very nicely, apart from the dining table which was too narrow and chairs were not so comfortable. We have pre-ordered the starters over phone to ensure quick service and it was well taken care by the stewards. Joydeep was very kind enough along with his another colleague who took good care of us. We had ordered fish fry as starters which was served hot but the bhekti fish was too hard to chew. None of us could enjoy it. Also we had cholar dal and luchi as starters. The dal was excellent but the luchi was again too hard and rubbery and it is not the usual Bengali luchi. The dough seemed like Batura and was extremely hard. We complained and the head chef was very kind enough to come atonce and attended us, but with his own explanation he tried to convince us. However he was very kind enough to give us one complementary plate of luchi, but never the less it had the same rubbery feeling. This is supposed to be a 5star food joint, but the quality as well as the quantity is not at all satisfactory, but the price was definitely 5star rate. At last to make our visit worth and memorable and to forget the quality of food served, we went around and took pictures which came out very nice. I am not going to visit this place to dine and would not suggest too. Only attraction can be for a photo shoot.

My fiance and I celebrated our anniversary on the 24th of September. The bakery of this place - namely Loafer's Cafe, is our saviour everytime we order cakes. Shamim is the person to ask for whenever you visit this place. He catered to each and every detail that I asked him to. I ordered a Black forest cake. Their black forest cake is very unique. They have a chocolate cream filling at the very bottom apart from the vanilla cream filling in between chocolate cake layers. The cake melts in the mouth and is just the perfect amount of sweet. In short, they make some of the best cakes in this city. Do pay a visit to this place and try it for yourself. Also, a plus point is that, their Black forest cake is eggless. They put meringue on it because I demanded it. That can be omitted as per once choice. The cream was fresh as always. The cake was moist. This was a really special day and Shamim and Loafer's Cafe ensured that the cake was perfect too.❤️

We had several dinners and breakfasts here and each one was delicious. Executive Sous Chef Suvashish Mukherjee and Chef Soumik prepared some wonderful meals for us and provided us with some wonderful experiences. The staff were all excellent and provided superb service. I would recommend a meal but they were all wonderful but if you like your sweets definitely leave room for Misti Doi it is delicious.

True to the name East India Room, the decor reflects a bygone era. On a weekday afternoon the place is sleepy but that gives us a chance to savour flavour & ambience and the outer courtyards in a relaxed manner. At the outset let me point out, not only food & Taj hospitality, the place has fabulous photo op backdrops. Try the bhetki ( indian carp) fry. Portions are 3 pieces, served with crispy potato wedges & tartar sauce. We tried the quintessential loochi ( deep fried wheat bread) along with cholar daal. The perfect bengali evergreen dish. For desserts we vote the Sandesh & caramel custard. Meal for 3 costs you approx 3600. A big shout out to Munshi, Namrata & Sushmita for their courtesy, service & warmth.

Executive Chef Suvashish Mukherjee and his team (Chef Biswajit Chakraborty and Biswarup Pramanik) created magic for our valentines dinner last night. My wife has several serious food allergies. Chef Mukherjee created a curated Bengali meal plan for us that my wife could relish without any fear of contamination. Chef Biswajit Chakraborty delivered a master class Bengali fare that tasted exactly like homemade food. Mrinmoy took great care of us throughout our dinner ensuring a contamination free zone around us. This is our second visit to Rajkutir for dinner and Chef Mukherjee and his winning team delivered with panache once again. We had a great time and an amazing experience. Well done Chef Mukherjee, we look forward to an extended visit at your hotel next year.

As hosts they are cordial and welcoming. We appreciate Joydeep’s hospitality and attention to all our requirements. But food is average and somewhat disappointing! The food quality doesn’t do justice to the expectations from this place at all. The luchi was hard (difficult for the senior citizens to chew) tasted more like baturas the mutton dakbunglow had a bitter taste, the fish fry was not soft rather felt shredded The only item we really enjoyed was cholar daal which I can recommend. For what we paid for a ten people lunch, the overall experience was not great. Food quality taste and menu needs attention. Will not recommend for big celebrations.

Unfortunately today's experience has been a total unexpected and disappointing one at East India Room Raajkutir so much so that I along with my wife walked out of the restaurant. When we entered the restaurant making prior reservation through the Taj application, there was just 1 waitor who was busy taking orders for another group and there was no other staff. Next, we sat at a table and after few minutes then whatever staffs were present there (looked like the restaurant was intensely short-staffed), one was busy clearing a table and 2-3 staffs who later I found were standing behind were busy chatting amidst themselves, laughing and gossiping - looks like they were in their own world within the restaurant premises and here we are sitting waiting for someone to approach us, share the menu or even offer a glass of water. For 15-20 mins we were sitting and no restaurant staff bothered to attend us. It occurred that staffs were lazy and reluctant to work. Although my previous experiences at East India Room has been marvelous and have been recommending this place, going forward I need to think twice. Anyways, we have walked out of the restaurant for some better option and even when we walked out, the staff didn't care - probably didn't even notice. So much so for Tajness and brand reputation. A total disgusting experience!

East India Room is one of the best which is situated in the city of joy ( Kolkata),restaurants of Raajkutir, serving some Bengali dishes which we can't explain through word .Whenever we visit same time we have to plan when we will come next.its feel all of their dishes are inspired from the era of British occupied Bengal. And i would thanks all Staffs for such a good service and care, and Specifically thanks to Mr Sanjay and Manoj. We will come back soon.

The ambiance and personalised service of this restaurant is simply outstanding. They made special arrangements for our occasion and did a beautiful photo shoot with genuine zamindari props. The Chef took care to prepare a lovely meal for us. I would like to make a special mention for the wonderful service of Koushik, Munshi, Unnati, Moumita and Biswajit, who went out of their way to make the occasion memorable. I highly recommend this restaurant to everyone who love fine dining in a heritage setting.

Great service and fantastic food. Enjoyed the best pantheras I’ve ever had, tasted the chicken tetrazzini….delish. And tried the thali (can’t remember what it’s called)…all so so good. The chef is very approachable and the staff are trained well.
