Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A cousin took us to the Village Bakery for lunch when we visited Athens. If you ever get close to Athens, you must plan to dine here. The pastries are "to die for." Our meal was excellent and I hated to leave. The speed of service is OK but probably too slow if you are in a big hurry. Plan ahead!

This is a great place to get a bite to eat. Focus is Vegetarian, but the food is great for any taste. Service is fast and friendly. The atmosphere is quiet with lots of tables and a patio. Lots of off-street parking.

This Athens institution has a wonderful selection of cakes and pastries, good coffee and good wifi. I visited several times during my week in Athens. The people working here are wonderful folks, friendly and helpful. It's the sort of place you can spend an ideal relaxed morning.
The only issue is that it gets busy and the methods of service don't work that well so things can break down and become too slow. I would really recommend, as this is a popular place, investing in a professional who could come in and revolutionise the ordering and delivery system. For example, everyone pays and takes a seat, then staff come out with the order, rather than waiting whilst pastries are plated up at point of sale; or better, separating takeaway service from sit down service using 2 till points. For alas, unless you have time to spare you would have to think twice about visiting, and then you would have missed something very good.

The food is fresh, local and sustainably sourced. The cafe is also fossil fuel free. Both of these points are worth supporting.
The bread, cakes, sandwhich sand salads are very tasty. Specials are also delicious. There is free wifi if you are a student wanting to study off campus.
I really like this cafe and often stop here while in Athens. I also very much like the small shop. You just need to make sure you are not in a rush. Even when there are only 3-4 tables of three or less people that have ordered food it still takes 40 mins or more for food to be made.

This place has great food, all of it organic an locally sourced. When I called, they did not at first know if they would be open for Easter; they don't take reservations; and when I arrived, they didn't know if they had orange juice or not. Obviously, you need to have a bit of flexibility to eat here. Still, the food is delicious and moderately priced--my wife and I had brunch for about $26, featuring a very unique turkey sausage and egg biscuit and a strawberry clafouti with two coffees. If it's nice weather, sit outside on the generous covered porch!

This is a great place to find local food prepared with thought. It is a great place to find healthy well-prepared food. All items on menu are great. Often it is too crowded to get in for lunch.

Visited my cousin at OU and wanted to take her and my sister out for breakfast after a night out. We came on a Sunday morning in February and got to sit outside! It was chilly but the sun was out so it was so nice! The whole set up is slightly eccentric but they're just doin their thing and it works for them. Not a huge variety but what they do offer is always fresh and seems like it's made with care! We love this place and it's laid back atmosphere. Very cute and cozy inside as well. I got the biscuits and gravy pictured. Very good. Large biscuit! Came with eggs that were perfectly done.

I was in Athens for Ohio University's parents weekend and wanted to treat my daughter to breakfast before heading home on Sunday. We were headed to Bob Evans when we passed Village Bakery and Café, with its cute and funky front porch, and opted to go there instead. I'm not sure if it's always this busy but we did wait a long time for our food. We weren't in a rush, though, so we refilled our coffee, had a good catch up and enjoyed the eclectic atmosphere. We both ordered the frittata, me with the smoked trout and my daughter the vegetarian version. I had the greens on the side with raspberry dressing my daughter the bread with jam. Everything was delicious! It was very obvious that our food was made to order and filled with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. I'd even guess that the butter, dressing, jam and the hot sauce we ordered was all home-made. No pre-packaged anything. We paid a bit more than we would at Bob Evans, just shy of $10 each for the frittata, but it was Sunday Brunch and the quality of every ingredient was excellent. The regular breakfast menu prices are lower and I see many options that tempt me. I'll visit again next time I'm in Athens.

This is healthy, good food fit for any day including a hot summer day. I ordered a cheese, onion, tomato panini. It was very, very good. My husband and I normally share our meals but not today. We really enjoyed the salad with fresh veggies, including sweet corn which made a real difference to a salad. Baked goods were wonderful -half the fun was looking at all the options and trying to decide. The place is very relaxed with seating both inside and out. We were early, but I could see that lunch hour was going to be very busy. There is a small market which also sells organic food and wines. Really nice place for lunch.

This place had delicious food, but be warned it gets busy and limited seating. It is a nice place to go for a leisurely breakfast/ brunch or carry out is an option. Many vegan/ vegetarian choices and baked goods.

Great place for lunch or to have coffee and a pastry.
We all had lunch sandwiches that were very good.
You order at the counter and they bring the food out to your table.
Good selection of breakfast sandwiches and panninis.
Tends to be on the expensive side due to the organic food that is served.

The Village Bakery has a very nice atmosphere, however we had an almost two hour wait for our food after ordering. Customers who came in much later than us were served before us, even though we were told they "did not forget about us." In addition, they ran out of quiche lorraine, which we were not told until an hour and half after ordering. When the food did finally get to us, it was not extraordinary, and overpriced for the portion size. The veggie quiche was good, but the garlic in the polenta was overpowering and inedible. The fruit crepe was so rich we could only eat a small amount of it. Perhaps we visited at the wrong time, but we're very let down with the experience.

Found this by accident while in Athens, Ohio for business. Was looking for a place to eat other than a chain. Was very pleased with my food, pleasantness of the staff and attractiveness of the restaurant. Very local and was very busy with localsl
