I was told this is Cuban food and I don't care because the food was amazing. I had a buffalo chicken wrap. (great) and big. Fries are homemade, need to ask for extra crispy fries. Salsa, Guac. are homemade and great tasting.

Best coconut shrimp in Athens

A return visit to Sol and the coconut shrimp appetizer was very good as it usually is. Had an order of fries and the fish spread appetizer as well. They were both good but the crackers that came with the fish spread just didn't do it for me. They were so hard, which is the kind of crackers that they were, that it made me think about the crackers instead of enjoying the fish spread. Once seated the service was good. I've been left standing(3-5 mins), on more than this visit, waiting on someone to seat me. On previous visits I've tried the pork bowl, the shrimp bowl and a few of their hamburgers. The pork bowl has many different flavors that you taste while eating it and its it's really good. The shrimp bowl is ok just not as flavorful as the pork bowl. The burgers I've tried are always cooked properly and are very tasty. If in Athens this is a very good small local restaurant to try.

Pleasantly surprised.

I met friends here stopping through town. I was a little hesitant given Covid, but everything went really well. We sat outside, and at 7 pm, the whole area was shaded on an otherwise hot day. I ordered a bowl, with chicken, and a chimichuri drizzle. The chicken was overcooked, but all the flavors were really nice. I left feeling like I ate something healthy. I also had a local Devil’s Kettle beer which was really good.

Food was fine, service was lacking

We ordered takeout from here on Friday (6/26/20). We received a text saying the food was ready and arrived a few minutes (2 or 3 minutes literally) later as we were shopping nearby. I pulled into the takeout parking and called as directed by the sign. I was told they were packaging my food and they would be out in a few minutes. Nearly 10 minutes passed and I went in to check. My food was sitting at the kitchen window, not bagged/ready-to-go. I managed to finally flag down an employee and she said she would get my food bagged for me. When I got to the cabin we were staying at, elements of my order were missing. In particular, the tostones was missing the dipping sauce. As a result we had very under seasoned fried plantains with no sauce (i.e. completely tasteless). The burger and black bean wrap we ordered were good. Based on reading many reviews on this restaurant, service/execution seems to truly be an issue. While I was waiting for my food I could easily see multiple tables with people impatiently waiting to have service.

Small, limited menu and slow.

Extremely slow and wasn’t even busy. Waited 8 minutes just to order a drink and another 45 to get my food. The menu is very limited and easy but takes forever to get served. I’m sure the excuse is because of short staffed but need to make that clear when you arrive.

Disappointing

Was looking forward to trying this restaurant while in the area for a biking trip. Menu looked promising. Was disappointed. Only thing we liked was the fish dip. Fish basket-fish and fries were greasy. Mac and cheese-tasteless. Would have been better off at McD.

Taste of the Caribbean

I was hesitating to have Caribbean food in SE Ohio. But, ended up loving it. The menu is huge and has something for everyone. We had tostones, maduros and a wide variety of dinners (burgers, sandwiches, chicken bowl). Everyone in our party of six was pleased. I recommend the Cuba burger. It’s delicious and you won’t leave hungry.

We have been lucky enough to eat at Sol two weekends in a row - once for dinner and once for brunch. The meals and atmosphere are wonderful (be sure to try the Cuban Coffee!!) - if you find yourself in the Athens area, head to East State Street and visit this family owned restaurant!

Great food and service!

Incredible food! Local restaurant with a diverse menu and craft beer selection. Highly recommend eating here! They have social distancing between the tables (you need a mask until you're seated) and gabe carryout and outdoor seating available. Super friendly wait staff too! Our server, Diana was fantastic and made great dinner recommendations!

it is a fine restaurant. not crowded like other places in Athens so you are socially distanced. chips and salsa are very good. make a good drink! only had b basic food for lunch/dinner.....didnt expect much but was not dissappointed.

DISAPPOINTED- be aware if you have kids. Sol HOST DRAG BRUNCH

Disappointed! -Sol has always been our favorite and go to restaurant in Athens until this past Saturday, April 15, 2023. When we walked in it was very crowded and it appeared that there was maybe a birthday party or bridal shower going on and when I asked the hostess if that was the case she told me that it was a DRAG Brunch! We should have just left but instead we asked to be seated outside so we didn’t have to watch the disgusting display and freak show during our meal. There were others feeling the same who elected outside seating. It was revolting. Why on earth would SOL sponsor a Drag Brunch on a Saturday afternoon?. There were families there, like us w little children that wanted a meal. Very uncomfortable, revolting to see. Is this a family restaurant? That crap can be done at an over 21 night club. SAD. Will NEVER RETURN. GO WOKE- GO BROKE

Newly discovered gem in Athens

Periodically have to visit Athens for work, discovered this great little place on my last trip. Will definitely be returning! Great, fresh food, good value and friendly people. So glad to have this spot as an option! It's locally owned for those that like to avoid the big chains.

Decent food with subpar service

I work in Athens regularly and am always on the lookout for healthy, flavorful food. I decided to try Sol tonight after passing by many times. The place is small with a fun vibe, and the menu has a wide variety of Caribbean/Cuban options. I tried the mahi mahi appetizer and a salad, both of which were tasty. The problem was the server, who was completely disengaged. I received the appetizer without utensils or a napkin, which I requested when he came back to take the rest of my order. He took his time bringing utensils, which was strange since the place wasn’t busy. He brought me the wrong check so I sat around for awhile until somebody else got his attention and asked him to return to the table. He talked to another coworker across the room while running my credit card at the table. He communicated very clearly that my business did not matter one bit, which left a very bad taste in my mouth.

A Great Find

Sol Restaurant was recommended by a staff member at a hotel where we stayed while out of town. He said it was Cuban food and my husband wasn't on board. But when we tried one restaurant and found out it was BYOB, and then anothe where the wait was longer than we wanted, we decided to try Sol. A casual, funky, non pretentious little restaurant with outstanding food and service. They even had entertainment. A must stop.

Slow Service and So So Food

Stopped by the Sol Restaurant after nieces White Coat Ceremony for Med School. Not sure if their staffing is down due to OU not being in session yet, but overall service was pretty poor. Ordered some mix drinks and couple sodas, and took a while to get both. Upon arrival the Berry flavored Mojito looked just like the normal one. After asking we found out they were out of berries. They put in some strawberry puree and those drinking it were satisfied. We ordered some fries and a quesadilla and after 30 minutes had to ask they pack it to go as we had a long drive home. Ate the fries and tried the quesadilla in the car. Fries were good. Quesadilla seemed like the sprinkled some sort of seasoning on the tortilla which I didn't care for, but biggest issue was it was soggy. Quesadilla's most places have a little crunch to them, but for sure aren't soggy. Won't be visiting this restaurant when in Athens in the future.
