La nueva palomino it’s without a doubt the best place in Arequipa to experience local food, these kind of restaurants are called “Picanterias” and offer a great variety of typical colonial foods, such as the Chicha de Guiñapo (a fermented drink made of a variety of corns, has a little bit of alcohol) or the Cuy chactado (guinea pig), recommended for “the brave” it’s a surprisingly good dish. The place it’s beautifully decorated with a colonial theme, old utensils, and some of the most local ingredients you can find. It’s important to have the correct mind set to have a great experience here, and I will explain why: If you don’t make a reservation and/or arrive late for lunch you will have to wait for a table and service, maybe an hour or two. To avoid this I would recommend having an early lunch, (from 12:00 to 13:00 normally it’s easy to get a table), or try to make reservations ahead. The service is usually great, really close and warm, but some times the restaurant gets really crowded, and this can make the experience go to the poor side. I have never had a bad experience in this restaurant, (but have heard of people that had), that’s why I recommend to be prepared to wait, be patient, remember you are in a different country with a totally different culture, and make the best of this! Try something new, and experience a full on Peruvian tradition “Picanteria”.

Came to this place in a hurry, they took little to bring us the order. Humongous portions! Delicious and cooked to perfection, here you can see the Arequipan artistry when it comes to food making. The chicha of guiñapo is a must. The ambience is great, cosy yet ample. The service was warm and fast. Come early as it crowds quickly.

The restaurant is super nice and decorated as a local house or farm. The dishes are big and tasty and highly recommended for trying Arequipean dishes with the original flavor. TIP: go before the opening time, because people queue up and the mosquitoes will eat you alive while queueing. Besides, first customers get the "Welcome clap" from the staff

I was eating Triple Arequipeño 🔸 Rocoto Relleno 🔹 Pastel de Papa 🔸 Chicharrón the seady waiters were dressed traditional for the tourists. rocoto relleno was ok. pastel de papa was ok minus. Chicharrón was bed and i could not eat it. It was expensive, 79 soles for one person, for low quality of the food. I eat the same food in other places in Arequipa and enjoy it.

Restaurant far from the historic center. On the recommendation of a tour operator in town. Show off. Strict opening hours, opening at noon sharp. The waiters in a row welcome you to the rhythm of the music, swinging their arms. 2 people are busy crushing spices under a grindstone for the show. Shop on site. On the plate it’s less convincing. We ordered mutton chops for 2 (700 grams announced) In the end we will pay for a scale at Christmas from the Management, theirs must be broken. 3 half potatoes to accompany the mutton, fatty throughout. A few pieces of lean meat did not satisfy our appetite. We probably didn't choose the right dish because sometimes copious plates crossed the room. We entered the first room first, to be served last. We had real doubts about the cooking of the dish.. A lot of walking for a big disappointment.

The Picanteria Nueva Palomino has very typical excellent dishes from Arequipa. All done the old way. The dishes are big enough for two people. Try the chicha, the Chicharrones (pork), the Rocoto Relleno, the Ocopa AREQUIPEÑA, and many others

Well decorated and clean environment. Attentive staff. The food, a disaster. We ordered stuffed rocoto, extremely spicy, so much so that it did not allow the flavors of the other ingredients to be felt. They serve at the wrong time, first they brought one dish and we had to wait for the other to start eating. Its cold spicy food, nothing special. The best is the single cheese they bring but it's not tasty either. High price for poor quality.

We were sitting waiting for Palomino to open. Several other couples were sitting with us in their outer area. We enjoyed nice conversation with my limited Spanish. Once the gate opened there was a lineup of senoritas and gauchos clapping and chanting “welcome” ( we assume!) we went up to the top floor with the sun shining through the roof. Our waiter was attentive and our beers and Ricotto Rellenos were excellent! We split one which was plenty of food! Truly authentic and delicious! Worth an approx. half hour walk from Plaza de Armas.

The place is very beautiful. We ordered stuffed rocoto, a typical Arequipa dish and it was honestly delicious. Another diner ordered rack of lamb. This dish is fried and with crispy skin but the dish they served was not crispy and the skin was like rubber, the feeling was that it had been heated in the microwave. We asked to change it and after a moment they brought the same refried dish and it still looked bad. In the end we decided to return the plate and order a meat stew and it was actually good.

this is a traditional eatery that now caters for both local and foreigners, more foreigners than locals the day I went. The restaurant itself is quite big with many different areas to dine, so there was distance and you could feel very comfortable eating there. Well decorated. The food is very good and the size is to share (unless you are really hungry!)

The pork was some of the best cooked meat I’ve ever eaten, cooked to perfection. Accompanied with dauphinois was superb pairing. Portion was a lot so I took some away with me and scoffed late at night when I was drunk. Definite visit if you can.

Typical Arequipa restaurant, away from the center, full of locals. Excellent place to try typical food. We arrived quite late so some dishes were no longer available. We ordered suckling pig and shrimp chupe. When they brought the suckling pig to my husband they told me there was no chupe left, so I ordered guinea pig but it took 20 minutes while my husband ate his plate. This part was very poorly managed. A shame, the place is well worth it. The guinea pig was very good.

2 locals recommended this picanteria in Arequipa to us, suggesting certain dishes, which is a guarantee of quality. When we went there, we didn't have to wait a single second to be seated (it must be said that there weren't many people there that day). The decoration is very charming and local. The dishes took a little while to arrive, but they were extremely plentiful (no one was able to finish theirs) and excellent. I also recommend the Chupe de Camarones, provided you can tolerate spicy dishes. After all this is the concept of a picanteria

I went because they advertise it as ufff the best in typical Arequipeña food, what would be my disappointment I asked for squash, which was bland, gracelessly hard beans as if they were passed, the squash dad of bad taste A tail broth I was served cold My son asked for a shrimp suck of terrible taste and cold. At the tables across the street, I could see they didn't even finish their dishes. COOKING FOR COOKING, NOT RECOMMENDED And the worst came later an upset stomach in more than two of my companions

I visited the restaurant after 2 years, with great expectations. The food was good; However, the terrible attention. Do they urgently need training in customer service, delays when waiting and entering, delays in serving dishes, bringing glasses, do they not sing birthdays if the birthday is the next day only on the same day, delays in bringing the bill, is there a lack of staff to serve? Or lack of attitude? In general I would not return, although the food was good, not as good as before, being cold or brought in parts differs. The experience must be total, I would not return.
