If you don't dine here, your loss

We are sitting in The Barn Bar & Grill writing this review. As the title says, if one chooses to walk past, their loss. We arrived in Picton at 4.30pm after driving up from Christchurch to catch our Bluebridge ferry at 2:00am tomorrow. With time to fill and rumbling bellies here we are - we chose 4 entrees - Garlic Loaf, Pork Belly Bites, Buttermilk Fried Chicken and Calamari. Whilst the food and beverages were excellent - exceptional was the service provided to us by Sandy / Sandi. Thank you Sandy / Sandi for simply being awesome, you are a credit to your profession and we hope your employer recognises you for this feedback.

Sandy made our night

We were a couple of tired travellers in need of a nourishing meal. Not only was the seafood platter a beautifully cooked feast of fresh seafood but our server, Sandy, made our evening so special with her gentle, kind manner and service that is world class. Special mention to Alex for our outstanding sticky date pudding!! We are definitely coming back!!

Fish to remember

As others have sad this is a quirky pub but the chef knows what he is doing and the service is friendly and responsive - you can tell it’s important to them that you have a good meal. The chef bought our tempura fish to the table and I couldn’t believe how good the quality was - not cheap but the produce is worth it. Get the fish!

Excellent food and service

We were so lucky to find this reasonably priced restaurant open on Boxing Day. We tried the mussels with a glass of local Rose followed by a generous plate of roast lamb. Best of all was the very friendly service, a Taiwanese woman, who was a real asset to the restaurant. Most places struggle to find enough staff. She is worth her weight in gold.

I figured in Picton you would get a reasonably good sea food platter. I was served seafood out of the supermarket box, it wasn’t cheap and it wasn’t good. Talking to the locals it has a new owner and if that’s the standard I can’t see it lasting. Wouldn’t go back if it was in the Sahara Desert and I wanted water.

To be honest I was a bit underwhelmed with The Barn. There only seemed to be one person serving and the service was a bit slow. The food was ok, pretty much pub food, but nothing to rave about. There was a good range of menu items and a solid kids menu as well.

Friendly, warm and delicious

The Barn is a quaint little restaurant in the center of Picton. I would call this more comfort food than high cuisine. That being said we had a wonderful evening. We were warmly welcomed on arrival and seated by a toasty antique stove on this cold evening. Both of us had the roast lamb special which at $22 was great value. The meat was tender and the roast veggies properly crispy. We matched a nice local Pinot Noir. Service was attentive but not obtrusive and we were graciously thanked for coming. A nice night!

Amazing staff serving outstanding food and service.

The staff here are super relaxed, friendly and love to converse and chat with you. Their seafood is caught fresh from the Marlborough sounds and tastes absolutely amazing. Their seafood platter and mussels were a particular highlight. The cooking methods really bring out the best of the food and their plating is some of the best I’ve seen, better than some fine dining restaurants I’ve been to. Their choc lava cake and ice cream I had for dessert was delicious, with a lovely atmosphere in the restaurant. I was most impressed with our meal, and felt it represented excellent value, with amazing staff. I would definitely make an effort to return, and feel that this establishment is actually underrated. The separation of the restaurant from the bar means you can enjoy a lovely meal in a restaurant atmosphere or you can have drinks at the bar. They also have a gaming room for anyone interested. The ribs sounded amazing, as did many other menu items, and my only disappointment is that I couldn’t possibly try any more dishes after such a filling and satisfying meal. This experience really sets the bar high for other establishments in Picton and would definitely recommend to anyone visiting or in the area.

Like Home Cooking!

My husband and I both had delicious meals. I had the lamb and he had the family fish. The servings were generous and came with lots of veggies. My lamb fell apart and was covered in gravy. If that isn’t your thing then I order this but it was delicious. I usually like my lamb rare but this was different but scrumptious. For veggies there was squash, carrot, sweet potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower. Cooked beautifully and not soggy. Reminded us of a home cooked meal!

Friendy place with good food

Wandered in and we were immediately welcomed and got a table without a booking. The orange roughy tempura was perfectly cooked and delicious. Salad and chips also very good. We were not pressured to leave on a Saturday night and had a nice time chatting with our friends

Like stepping back in time, Old Fashioned Value & Service

Great atmosphere, The staff were awesome and the place is done up with all sorts of memorabilia. The roasts are great value with plenty of meat and 6 veges! (Not your cheapy mixed veg here!). Everything was beautifully cooked with White sauce on the Cauli and Gravy on the meat. AAA+++

Rather expensive pricing for

Rather expensive pricing for very average food, may need to upmarket their menu to match the price. The vegetarian lasagne was the best dish out of the five ordered. Nice helpful staff though.

Lovely good Kiwi meal

So pleased we found "The Barn". Yes, it's old fashioned but it is clean and has wonderful hospitatality. Prices are very competitive We enjoyed a lamb toast with all the roast vegetables over a glass of wine. Filled with NZ memorabilia was interesting and so unique. Couldn't recommend high enough.

Fantastic service and food

Called in for lunch and we were very pleasantly surprised by the lovely welcome and shown to our table. The premises are filled with awesome memorablia that has been gifted down through the owners and a delight to look at. The food was served shortly after our order was taken and although not top restaurant food it is definitely what mum would make- good wholesome food. I had the schnitzel and chips and it was so yum and I am very fussy with my schnitzel and my husband had the ham steak and said it was the best ham steak meal he has ever had - what more can you say. Well worth a visit if you are in Picton and we will be back again.

TAKEAWAYS WITH A SMILE IN THE MIDDLE OF COVID

During a 3 week trip away from the main Covid centre of NZ, evening meals where possible were confined to takeaways. The Barn in Picton was recommended by the Motel we were staying at- for good reason. Staff remembered us with big smiles after one night. Takeaway food was waiting for us on time. The quality of our meals gave us an urging to go back for more. Visitors overnighting in Picton should consider either eating in or ordering takeaways at this centrally located restaurant Ed. To the staff… lots of well earned meows. Thank you for looking after us so well. David R Auckland
