For our first evening and meal in Budapest, we dined at the Chef’s table in Arany Kaviar. This inconspicuous restaurant, tucked away on Ostrum ut, proved to be a gastronomique phenomenon. Our 10-course taster’s menu, the product of several months of preparation and perfection by...Head Chef Laszlo Kanasz and his team, is now debuting in its second week. The menu was complemented by champagne and a wonderful, but subdued white wine only available at the restaurant, selected by the sommelier. Mr. Kanasz and his team prepared each course in full view and then along with with the Maitre D’, presented each course describing the ingredients and the order in detail with panache. Each course blended a cavalcade of tastes that were only surpassed by their presentations. From red prawns to chocolate covered oyster eggs, mackerel to monk fish, the tasting menu is imbued with Mr. Kanasz’s background from Lake Balaton region. Although seated indoors, we were even treated to a picnic (without ants) that included a sour cream and caviar laden waffle complemented by chicken skin sandwiches of anchovies and avocado. An amazing experience at this restaurant. From the moment we entered, the attentive service was superb. The menu was really exciting and varied. Staff took time to explain the menu and help us order. The sommelier was very helpful. The food was amazing. We had...a caviar selection which was fantastic and then we had a fish selection and steak tartare to share. For mains we had octopus, a tomahawk steak and Dover sole. All exquisite. Although high end this is not overpriced for the quality of the food or the fantastic service. A real decadent treat.More

After almost 2 years of challenges caused by the COVID situation, the Better Half and I were thrilled to return to one of our favorite restaurants. While we have enjoyed their delivery services, nothing matches sitting in the restaurant enjoying the nice pace of wonderful...food and service. Here are some brief highlights: 1. Come for the service, stay for the food. Upon arrival on a Saturday evening, we were shown to our table and had glasses of champagne within minutes. Nice beginning to the evening. And then fresh bread with duck fat. A welcome beginning. 2. The food. Oh, the food. Arany Kaviar is as much art as it is wonderful flavors. And while I am more of a flavors guy, the presentation is appreciated and adds to the elegant environment. We began with starters. The Better Half is quite the caviar connoisseur and ordered a sampling that came wonderfully presented with the onion, egg, sour cream, etc. She said it was delightful and ate every last piece. I stuck to a more traditional fish starter that presented various kinds of fresh, delectable fish prepared in multiple ways. Excellent quality, delicious flavor. 3. The mains. Across the table, a plate of beef tartare with caviar was devoured while I enjoyed the lobster dish - which BTW was presented as a piece of art. Really super attention to detail that almost made me not want to touch it, but my appetite won out and I enjoyed it thoroughly. 4. Service - fantastic staff that is very attentive without being bothersome. Thanks to the entire team - great people. And a special thanks to Dániel K, as we always enjoy his insights and discussions. 5. “Surprise Ending” - towards the end of our visit, we were served a “tower” of hidden desserts. With it came a paper explaining the ingredients to each serving, which was recommended we read it after enjoying everything - which we did. I won’t give away what we had, but these were more artistic designed - wonderful flavors that capped off a brilliant evening. My hats off to Mathias T. and the entire kitchen team. Arany Kaviár has been here across 4 decades, and for good reason. The experience is wonderful. It begins with a elegant, but welcoming dining area, with attentive and personable staff. It is then filled with delicious tastes that could be mistaken for art on a plate. And it’s bookended with creativity and an atmosphere that we have enjoyed for 20+ years.
