Fan-Tan is a story of East meets West. The name orignates from the game, long played in China with beans or pebbles and evokes Arrowtown’s goldrush history, when, in the 1860’s Chinese miners brought their own gambling games to the goldfields. Our cuisine is a fusion of European, NZ, Pacifica food with flavours influenced from Asia. It is simple delicious food, designed for sharing and as our name suggests, “brings a sense of joy, pleasure and entertainment”.

A good meal here with super friendly and efficient service. We weren’t very hungry and thought we were ordering small plates but it was too much as the portions are huge. We had the raw fish in lettuce leaves and coconut -
tasty and light - with yummy prawn and pork dumplings a in a coconut sauce (the highlight) with some duck pancakes (duck not quite crispy enough but still good) some salt and pepper calamari (huge portion and not much salt and pepper in evidence but nice chilli sauce on the side) and finally some stir fried veg which were al dente and very good. So beware of eyes being larger than ones tummy as the menu is so tempting!

We loved our dinner at Fan Tan. The food was excellent as was the service. Wait staff were very friendly and very experienced. I would highly recommend dining at Fan Tan to anyone I know is visiting the region. I would definitely not miss dining there again when I am next visiting Arrowtown.

Beautifully tucked away off the main street, you walk into Fan Tan thats warm, inviting and you are taken care of by the staff relatively quick.
Not a big fan of fusion, but I really enjoyed the dishes that came out and what was on offer. Its really good for anyone who hasn't ventured into asian cuisine but really wants to and doesn't know where to start. I really recommend Fan Tan is the place to go and let your tastebuds go on a journey of wonderful flavours.
The table service was lovely and to what is expected when dining. I say that cause I use to work in hospitality and was very happy with everything. My partner and I shared everything as you would any asian dish, as asian cuisine is for sharing and with the portions that came out it was large enough to share amongst ourselves.
We were contemplating on a curry, but weren't sure because of how many dishes we ordered. But the waitress came in and checked on us and asked if we would like it or not, it was just that personal touch that made it amazing. Instead of me asking for her to come over and letting you her know.

We are regular visitors to AT so were keen to experience FanTan on about 29 December. We were not disappointed, very nice Asian fusion food, lovely cocktails and very attentive staff. We would definitely recommend and look forward to returning soon. Our 3 stars were based on the unfortunate atmosphere experience due to a large table next to us of about 20 people, most of whom were Arrowtown locals, and this was confirmed by the staff who knew some of them. They were very loud and when a few of them starting singing The Gambler and Loyal and Sweet Caroline we knew we were in trouble. The staff tried really hard to keep them under control and even turned the house music up to try and drown them out. One particular low point was when one of them got another guy in a headlock which caused even more unwanted commotion. We would have stayed for desert by about 8.45pm but by then matters were out of control and most of the other diners inside had also left. The saddest thing though is that this group of Arrowtown locals thought it was perfectly fine to behave like that in a local restaurant with other customers nearby and in these difficult hospitality covid times. I felt very sorry for the manager and staff who apologised profusely for this behaviour.

On a rainy evening my family and I had the experience of Fan Tan, great welcome and attentive wait staff. We were sat near the chefs preparing the food which was an experience in it's self we ordered fish sashimi (salmon), Dumplings, Miso encrusted aubergine and the Beef tataki for entree. The aubergine and the Beef tataki were the stand out dishes although the other two were great in their own right, but the beef was sublime. Mains followed and my daughters had the crispy duck pancakes(which they adore). My wife and I had the Singapore noodles one with crispy chicken and the other pork belly both a taste sensation. Great touch was the chef delivering the mains so had plenty of chat about the amazing starters apparently the beef tataki was a recipe from a temporary chef only there for a month, if this is ture visit now and order this, You Will not be disappointed.
The kids had desert with 4 spoons (of course) one had the cheesecake offering which was great but the other had 'forbidden fruit' which was a feat of engineering resembling a Cherry with a chocolate stem. This was incredible, white chocolate casing with chocolate mousse surrounding a cherry compote sitting on orange chocolate cake dust on top of real tree bark, amazing!
Well worth the visit if you're in Arrowtown, in fact if your in Otago, go visit Fan Tan... Great great great meal.

When we walked in we were greeted by all staff on shift including the chef! We were welcomed in and seated immediately. All the staff were absolutely lovely and great at their job. We were served very fast.
The food was amazing, hands down the best food we got on our trip to Queenstown. We got the opportunity to thank the chef personally for the food and when we left he came over and shook our hand. Beautiful food and service, start to finish. HIGHLY recommend!

A family dinner at Fan-Tan exceeded all expectations. The 'Trust the Kitchen' option was a great way to experience the menu, so much beautiful food, a fair price point and the staff offered to pack the remaining so we could take home and enjoy. Staff were friendly and fun. Food was delicious and the dessert an culinary experience that delighted us all. The kids equally loved the kids menu and picky away at our food. The restaurant was warm and comfortable and while we were the last the leave, we were not made to feel rushed to go. 11/10 we will be back.

We dined here after reading the positive reviews on Trip Adviser and were extremely happy with our choice. We chose several starters to share and the flavors and freshness were some of the best we've had in NZ. A must if you're on town.

Surprisingly wonderful restaurant in historic Arrowtown. Deceived by its name and the fake take out feel of its online menu, we were not expecting much beyond watered down Asian fare. Instead, the restaurant had a very modern, open setting and the Asian fusion food was great! Very friendly service staff too. Highly recommended.

I was recommended here because our hotel restaurant was shut. I had googled and looked at reviews so we decided to go. We were greeted by a lovely young man who seated us, took drinks and water order strait away so that was good. We decided to do the banquet for 2 people, it was nice, the dumplings were nice, but I think if I went again I would order from the menu. I didnt really like the banquet menu, I would have like more meat dishes. The curry was lovely and the dishes are made for sharing

Rip off duck. We paid $46 for large duck. Came with 8 pancakes, tiny amount of shallots and sauce. Duck was dry and macerated into tiny pieces. No flavour and exceptionally small potion. Noodles were good but did not make up for the disappointing overpriced and underpowered duck.

We have visited Fan Tan many, many times. This is a testimony that the food is great, the ambiance enjoyable and the service most attentive. The Indonesia Chef cooks very tasty dishes, the portions are good. From time to time, they introduce new dishes but our favorites include the sticky pork rib, the curries, the dumplings to mention a few.

Amazingly delicious food, for the non vegetarians try to pork belly - it’s amazing! The cheesecake dessert is pretty fine too. Love the attentive yet non intrusive service. Loved it!

My son and I had dinner here on day one of our easter trip to Arrowtown - it set a high bar. We thought the dumplings were fantastic and then had the peking duck pancakes - they were so good they reminded us of our trip to Bejing a few years ago. The staff were really helpful and the place has a great vibe. Thanks Fan-Tan!
