Good service, bad value for money

Previous visits at this cafe have been hit and miss. Most recent about 12-18mo ago had good food but poor service. I understand there are new owners now.. Service was good today but the portions were small and not good value for money. The meals were nothing special either - just "fine".

Huge variety

Great set up, large variety of foods to choose - typical kiwi classics. The tacos, corn fritter stack and ice chocolate are my go to here!!

Lovely place for having breakfast

Lovely place for having breakfast on a weekend morning. Hospitality is good. The menu offers quite all the typical options for a breakfast meal.

Disappointing- unlikely to return in a hurry

Good play area for kids. Glad to see their closing time has been updated to 4pm. We arrived with a group of families this afternoon, anticipating the cafe would be open until 4:30 (per their details posted online). Having set up near the play area, which was great for the kids, we were told at 3:50pm that we needed to leave as the cafe was closing. This was unfortunately delivered in a very aggressive and rude manner…which wasn’t necessary. What was also unfortunate, was some members of our group had only just received their coffee’s and cakes, so these had to be “guzzled”. We tidied up the kids area and left, and when I tried to speak to the wait staff about this after our group had left, was pretty much told it wasn’t their problem. A disappointing experience as previously it’s been a good spot for a meal or coffee, but with so many other options in the area now, we will be unlikely to return in a hurry.

Manager with an attitude

We are frequent customers of the Friend of the Farmer Cafe, however will not be going back in a hurry! The manager Michael would not accept a voucher that we wanted to use, however it clearly stated on the dinefind website that Friend of the farmer cafe Takanini was a participating business and "accepted this particular voucher". We ended up paying for our meal however were not impressed by his attitude and unwillingness to acknowledge the information we were trying to show him on the website. All he was concerned about was not knowing how to claim the money back if we used our voucher.

Turned away for being plant-based

I used to come here frequently after I had a really yummy plant-based brekkie here a few months ago. Today I visited with my mum and husband, and when hubby and I requested the plant-based brekkie they said it wasn't on offer any more. We asked if there was anything we could order, and they said no. We had to go elsewhere. I NEVER write "terrible" reviews but the fact that a cafe in a literal plant/produce store couldn't offer even one plant-based option had me really miffed. Vegetarian / plant-based diets are increasing in popularity, yet literally everything on today's menu had meat in it. I guess we aren't welcome to eat here, and I'm really disappointed.

We have been here several times over the last few years, and this cafe has had its ups and downs with some visits being positive and others very negative, which seemed due to change in chefs and ownership. They seem to have done away with the previous obnoxious manager and staff who looked down their nose at you when serving with the most inappropriate clothing. We decided to give it another go as we had heard some good reviews, so our recent visit at the weekend was very pleasant with staff that seemed to want to serve you and clothing appropriate to a cafe environment. They had very nice looking cabinet food and the mixed grill we chose to share was very appealing. We will definitely give it a return visit.

Met up with some friends and was enjoyable place with lots of room and service good. Food did the job too. Was hard to find from the roadside as the cafe wasn’t well sign posted.

Lovely relaxing environment

We stopped in for a light meal and drink, lovely relaxing environment with all the plants, staff were lovely, food was great, kids loved the play area, animals and trampoline

Very different setting

This cafe is in the Kings Plant Barn premises. It has interesting features such as caged budgies, small animals area for kids and a sulphur-crested cockatoo. The cafe is very big with lots of tables and staff who are very fast taking orders and delivering food and beverages. Prices are very good and food is really nice. Cafe looks over the expansive growing area. We understand from a staff member that the business has new owners - a Maori trust - whose management are very nice to work for and who have plans to make this an even better place to visit.

Be warned - it's outside

Popped in for a quick breakfast before going to watch netball. It's 9 degrees celcius and there is no inside. People are sitting out in the cold for their Sunday breakfast... Sometimes I don't get my fellow kiwis. What's nice about shivering over your food which is no doubt almost instantly cold. Looks like a nice place for a summer day though. Just not when it's 9 degrees...

Delicious .. hidden gem

Really enjoyed my brunch here, and will be back. The staff were friendly, great value for money and quick service, plus the food was delicious. 10/10 from me, great to have a rustic local cafe with good food. I had an omelette with salmon, cream cheese and capers that was very generous and my friend had eggs benny bacon which also looked yum.

Quiet, nice decor and great breakfast

Its great western breakfast and the coffee is certainly not slacking in any area - strong and aromatic. Prices were a little steep but servings were reasonable. Children friendly and with birds also flying across the cafe without pestering you or your food till you leave.

Nice food with poor service

It is located in the back of King's Plant Barn in Takanini. We arrived there just before midday. There were plenty of car parks but nearly full. Cafe was pretty busy and had good atmosphere but there were no staff welcoming us. We just grabbed a seat which was quite cozy and comfy. Nice food and coffee with poor service and unfriendly staff.
