We booked for dinner at an outside table for 6:15 pm. It was a beautiful evening and we enjoyed the pretzel bun (very tasty starter), snapper for two with a side of courgettes and a side of the crispy potatoes with a bottle of the...St Claire reserve sauvignon blanc, followed by the chocolate marquise and coffee panacotta (we were surprised how yummy that one was). All in all, a lovely evening and everyone should try it at least once.More

My friends and I enjoyed a delicious dinner here last night. A perfect night for watching the sun set over the Waitangi treaty grounds. Our Italian waitress was very friendly and professional and the food was fabulous. No criticisms.

With summer stunning views and an evening sunset ambience that is so Russell and so unique . DO book ahead for a window seat ! or if you are a group or family outside and across the road at one of the large tables even...closer to the water but with a definitely more relaxed feel. Good menu and wine list To sit inside in the windows wide open and enjoy the view with their stunning fresh local oysters a warm pretzel roll and a glass of chilled bubbles is a simple yet beautiful thing and my favourite way to enjoy the summer break The whole snapper is a meal for 2 people but do try the crispy potatoes and roast courgette with capers and and my pick the Adffogato and one of the local cheeses all superb! I like that wait staff recommend sides with meals for hungry looking teens ( I overheard this at the next table and I’m sure it wAs appreciated , nothing worse than leaving a restaurant with young adults saying they are “ still hungry “). An iconic local restaurant that wins hands down in Russell as my most romantic pick because if the view doesn’t win you the food and attentive service will ! Highly recommend and if you found this helpful please give me a thumbs upMore

We had booked the near by Duke of Marlborough hotel but decided we preferred the menu in the gables. When we asked if it would be possible to get a table were were told by the manager in an extremely condescending tone that “the staff...need a break some time we can’t make them work 18 hours a day” and that dinner service began in an hour. Deciding not to let him put us off trying the food we returned an hour later and had an absolutely exceptional meal. The venison is the best I have ever had and I order it every time I see it on a menu. The view and location were both beautiful and all of the other staff who served us were extremely criendly. I would highly recommend this restaurant but must admit the welcome wasn’t exactly warm and on any other day would have cost you our custom.More

Several lovely visits during our holiday in Russell. The staff were always friendly and the drinks and food range is great. Sitting outside on The Strand is a bonus as you feel like your at a beach bar, but have all the facilities of a...full pub and resturant behind you.More

Fabulous food for a wonderful Christmas Eve dinner. Freshest oysters and then shared a whole snapper. Great service too

I had bought vouchers for this restaurant before we came to Russell as i had always wanted to try this lovely looking restaurant on the waterfront. We were extremely disappointed with the menu selection so ended up with the fish and chips. Very expensive and...no better than the fish and chips at a much cheaper place. Service wasn’t great either. Won’t be back.More

Lovely views, gourmet food (try the oysters: wow!) but we found the wait staff lacking. When I informed her there was plastic in the bread, and showed her the plastic which clearly came from inside the bread, she replied with “oh” and took the plates...away. She returned with the dessert menu. We did not get an apology from her nor the chef or manager, we were not offered any type of discount or offered a free drink... nothing. If this issue happened at McDonald’s inside a $5 burger management would be falling over themselves to make amends, but a $16 side dish at The Gables may contain plastic and the staff won’t care. Not good enough, especially when we were the only ones in the restaurant until one other customer came in for a solo lunch, book in tow.More
