Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Yes, this is great fine dining, but we liked Terra in Paihia more, as there were just more flavors and combinations going on. We were staying in Paihia, so it was an adventure to get here, especially when weather is bad and the ferry isn't...running. The wine pairings were really nice and service was friendly and attentive.More

The venue is lovely - we had a nice table outside with a beautiful view overlooking the bay. The food was impeccable, everyone (in our party of eight!) really enjoyed their meals; the crayfish was my personal choice and it was lovely. There was a...very good selection of reasonably priced wines available by the glass. The desert menu is definitely worth a look (try the pancotta) . The service was attentive and helpful and i thought the prices were very reasonable. Great restaurant ; highly recommended; one of the best meals we have had in New Zealand!More

Beautiful spot - on the veranda which felt as though we were round a friend's for dinner. Deliciously fresh and locally sourced ingredients, lovely wine and cocktails. Best meal I've had in a long time.

My wife and I went to Sage for our 40th wedding anniversary while staying in Russell. A wonderful experience with excellent food , a beautiful view of forests and the ocean. The steak was the best I have ever eaten. Would recommend highly. We got...reservations as it can get fairly busy. It was about a 20 minute drive from Russell.More

We enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Sage, despite the gray drizzly day. The food was fantastic, the setting is beautiful and the service was perfect. We ate in many restaurants during our trip to New Zealand - Sage @ Paroa Bay was one of the...very best!More

Fabulous experience from the beautiful location, to wonderful service…to the superbly delicious food. Spent more than 3 hours for lunch… Chef’s choice was amazing, and highly recommended… will definitely return for more! Congratulations Chef Guillaume! We were very impressed

We are locals and have dined at Sage on a number of occasions having wonderful experiences, but this time was the complete opposite leaving us questioning on returning. Wife and I had a reservation for Valentine’s, they had a Valentines day set menu special for...$125pp. In short; this was not near worth paying $250. Left the venue disappointed and feeling ripped-off. Appetiser: one Dumpling each (delicious apart from the dough being slightly undercooked) Starter: 3 slices of Lamb loin to share (This is where we began to regret not ordering from the menu) Main: 3 potatoes, 2 broccolini and flounder fillet to share. We mentioned to the waitress our concern and were offered no compromise, instead we asked to order additional food from their menu. For perspective, we are well aware we can order a 3 course diner for $100 each and be satisfied. What we got was a $250 meal for one person to share. If I need to count how many potatoes we each get, then something is not right. We would have happily paid double for a better experience.More

We had a delicious meal in a stunning setting, with excellent service. We had had several recommendations about Sage, but the restaurant was closed when we visited Russell on our way north. We detoured back to Russell for lunch on our way south just to...experience what Sage had to offer. We weren't disappointed. I'd highly recommend a visit!More

My daughter and I decided to share a rib-eye steak and asked for it to be cooked medium rare. When it came it was dripping blood so we asked if it could be cooked a little more. However, when we started to eat there was...a great deal of the meat that was inedible, being very fatty and a lot of gristle. My steak knife failed to cut some of it. Also, the broccolini served with the meal was yellow - well past the sell by date and certainly should never have been cooked let alone served! The management were very fair and did not charge us for this meal. The staff were extremely nice. My other daughter enjoyed a Crayfish Risotto which was excellent.More

We ate at this restaurant last night after a deeply disappointing meal at the Gables (so-called-Italian) restaurant in Russell (see separate review). What a contrast. Superb food, every course delicious and perfectly executed. Friendly, knowledgeable and attentive staff. Relaxed atmosphere. Stunning view. Interesting bird life...on the lawn in front of the restaurant. And, better value than the over-priced Gables. Needless to say, we’ve booked a second visit, for our last night in Russell, before heading to Stewart Island via Auckland. If you’re looking for fine dining in a lovely setting with brilliant staff, then don’t hesitate. Make the 15-minute drive out of town to Sage: you won’t regret it.More

We took advantage of the complimentary shuttle service so we could enjoy the full experience. From start to finish we were looked after by our awesome waitress, attentive but not overbearing, just the right amount of interaction. The drinks selection was excellent, the wine sampler...was a good way to taste a few different wines, I was surprised at how good the Chardonnay was (not usually a fan of Chardonnay at all). The view and setting on the outside deck was second to none, some nice unobtrusive background music made it a great experience too. And the food…well that was just spectacular, great options, we ended up having an array of entrees and sides and staggered them through the afternoon and finished with a lovely light and refreshing desert. I look forward to returning for dinner and sampling the mains options! I highly recommend this place for all your special occasions!More

Fabulous location, good food, bizarrely rude service and a delay of an hour between courses. By the third hour, most of our guests left before dessert having given up on ever seeing it. We're laughing about it now but at the time it was excruciating.
