This is a second visit, we just love this winery restaurant. Both times we sat outside and took in the stunning views. They make it a real dining experience, and do not rush you, so we spent a couple of hours enjoying their wine and...their delicious food. It’s a real must if you are in Russell, sometimes they run a shuttle from the wharf, so you don’t have to drive. They do degustation which we really enjoyed last time, but this time we really enjoyed their superb dumplings, and delicious crayfish risotto. The steak was cooked to perfection and it was a generous serving, we also loved the brownie! This restaurant is a real treat, the service, views and food is really worth the visit. I also love their chardonnay and was pleased to still be able to buy their 2019 to take home.More

Let's start with what was good - the venue and view, the service (a French couple who offered top class service throughout), and to begin with the food. We chose the 5-course degustation menu together with wine matching. The amuse bouche, aperitif, entrée were all...well presented, tasty and built up our expectations for the main "Plat" course. This was a pork sirloin dish of good portion-size and with interesting accompaniments but the meat - it was really lacking in flavour, fatty and texturally "chewy" - a real let down. In addition the estate wines were under-whelming and far from good examples of what New Zealand vineyards produce. The bar was also quite limited. For the overall quality offered not the best of value.More

We have been here several times, mainly before it changed hands and it was always up and down. This time it was outstanding for all of us. We had the fish and it was beautiful and crispy, another had the duck and the other person...had the steak and they were all enjoyed. Great setting and great service to match, I would highly recommend this restaurant, a little out of town but well worth it.More

We visited on a lovely sunny day so had a table outside on the veranda, with fantastic views of the hills and ocean. We had the set menu and it was just delicious and professionally presented. Loved the wine. We were not rushed and spent...3 hours enjoying our food and wine whilst taking in the views. The staff were very attentive. Definitely recommend it was a great experience.More

Having been recommended by friends to visit Sage and knowing their tastes in fine dining, the MOW (Minister of War aka wife) and I had a pleasant drive to this Russell/Paroa Bay restaurant and winery. The first thing of note was the location is well...sign-posted and you can easily find it without using E-Maps. The only annoying factor-like everywhere else these days are bloody face-masks and my sympathy for the personnel who have to wear them on a continuum was out there. We were seated on the deck overlooking the estate and the ocean, great views. More importantly, was the food and wine, so we chose the tasting menu which delivered on all fronts, taste, presentation, style, and size. We knocked back a very reasonable Pinot Gris followed by a good robust long black coffee (and a port which wasn't quite there) but nonetheless, the whole experience was most pleasurable, to the point where I will stay either on the estate or somewhere closeby next time.More

We emailed ahead and asked if they could cater for a plant based menu, “no problem” was the reply. The day of the celebration they emailed the planned menu for approval! 10/10 Not only that they opened up their vineyard for us to walk our...dogs prior to the meal. The best experience, don’t miss out on this world class establishment when visiting the Bay of Islands. Thanks Sage we look forward to our next visit.More
