Offering a decent range of galettes (buckwheat crepes), toasties and chips as well as a range of sweet foods too, they keep their menu simple but the food is delicious and also much of it is gluten free.

We used to visit the only French restaurant in Nelson, La Gourmandaise, and have been missing their lovely galettes ever since they closed their restaurant a few years back. So we were really excited to learn that they have reopened (albeit in a small scale)...in Rutherford Street. We were there for an early lunch, around 11.30am, and the café was already stinking badly. The café adopts an open kitchen design so you can see – and smell – everything that’s being prepared. Unfortunately there is no ventilation in the café and no extraction fans / rangehoods above the 2 galette / crepe machines nor the place where the chef fries his bacon and chips. As a result, the whole café is like a big deep fat fryer. We only stayed there for half an hour or so, and half an hour too long. I couldn’t taste my galette because all I could smell was that oily, greasy, disgusting smell. I went back to the office as if I had worked a full shift in a chip shop, the stink stayed with me for the rest of the day. It was a disgrace and an embarrassment! I wish the owners will pay more attention to ventilation and keep the sitting area fresh. It was a hugely unpleasant visit and I will not go again.More

Had a delicious meal by taking a takeaway and sharing it with 2 friends. I chose a "cassoulet" and a slice of moussaka. We particularly enjoyed the cassoulet. They cooked it in a authentic way. It reminded me flavors you can find in France. And...to finish off with a sweet note I ordered a slice of lemon pie so yummy. This is a place to try out when you are in Nelson!More

This place is very good indeed. Spotless clean. We ordered x2 galettes and both were as good as you will get anywhere. We also orderd a side of chips. I find you can tell a lot about an establishment from its chips. These were the...standard 5mm commercial chips. poss. gilmores or Mr Chips. Perfectly cooked. Not hard to do but it is supprising how many places manage to mess up this most basic of kitchen taskes. The flat white was also above average. Total cost was around $36. Parking near this place is a pain in the a... I have a bad leg but was glad I bothered to walk from down the road by the girls college. Can recomend and will go back again soonMore

We visited Rustic Cuisine before leaving Nelson and I am glad we didn’t miss it! We ordered three galettes for our breakfast, and these were to die for. We had two ham and cheese galettes and one potato and “wildfire cheese” version. All were delicious...and certainly filling. The staff are French so it is very authentic. I recommend this place to anyone in Nelson looking for a breakfast or lunch.More

Great hosts and service. Amazing crepes - sweet and savoury, pastries too die for and best coffee in Nelson. Also now has locally made "French" products such as pate, cheese and meals in a jar. Always enjoy going to this eatery.

We stumbled on this delightful cafe in Nelson not far from The Nelson Hotel and what a find. Crepes, Galettes and patisserie straight out of France, absolutely delicious. The staff are super friendly, the service quick and the coffee Devine. The Cheese Choux was still...warm from the oven. A must go to place in Nelson. We went twice for breakfast in our three day stay it was that good.More
