Stopped in at Stefano’s for lunch during a pit stop in Nelson on our driving trip around NZ’s South Island. We ordered ‘La Mafiosa’ and ‘Godfather’ pizzas, both in small sizes and we were not disappointed. The size was a very generous small, more than enough for one person and both pizzas were delicious. The crust was thin and not as crispy as I would have liked but still very good, didn’t detract from my enjoyment overall. We were served within 20 mins of ordering and the service was friendly. One negative was that they forgot about my drink, but it was brought over promptly when I reminded wait staff. I would highly recommend Stefano’s and would dine again next time I’m in Nelson.

We have lived in Nelson for over six years (having moved from the San Francisco Bay Area) and Stefano’s is a very natural part of our happy existence. Kevin, a relatively new staffing addition at the pizzeria, is delightful, fun and kind not to mention the rest of the wait staff who are great. The chef’s are talented and obviously care about the food they produce. While the ambience is sometimes a little pedestrian (this restaurant is, after all, upstairs in a movie theatre), the service, good pizza and staff culture has consistently made us happy regulars.

I've eaten here several times now, and am never disappointed. Great pizzas and friendly staff. The small pizzas are not that small (about the same as a Dominos pizza), and the large pizzas are huge! Definitely worth checking out.

My last 4 or 5 visits have been characterised by all or part of my order that I paid for not turning up. Today it was the tea I ordered. Previously it has been coffee or even the pizza. The food is straighforward and good, and I wouldn't complain about that. This is the 4th place I have eaten this weekend in Nelson (the other 3 have been great, good or fine, and I this has really left a sour taste in my mouth. Staff appear to be friendly but distracted or preoccupied. When I eventually discussed the fact that this has happened every time I have come in recent years ... usually I try again after two years ... (once I've forgotten how substandard the last experience was and hoping for a change) there was an apology and a defense but no concern about putting things right. It was a reminder to me that even though the food can be good, and mistakes can happen, having to remind staff of the order paid for in advance (and listening to their below par response) can really make one wonder why we bother. It doesn't seem to be about individual staff members but overall culture, training and empowerment of staff to find ways to put things right and show basic respect to all customers. Sorry I can't say it was a pleasant experience.

After a long day driving we stopped in for something to eat here. It was quite busy and the staff looked quite frazzled. We were told to sit and water would be brought to us.
We proceeded to decide on food and went to order, upon ordering food we tried ordering alcoholic drinks. The guy serving us first talked about the beers to us and when we asked for one of each he said he needed ID. I produced my Australian drivers license (that is in date) and he looked it over the said that it was policy to only accept NZ drivers licenses or passport for internationals. At 28 I found this fairly annoying as my passport was locked in my suitcase in the car down the street. So we decided not to get anything rather than argue.
If this is the case, I fully understand the laws but a sign should be displayed and staff should ask for ID well before discussing beers not only once they’re ordered.
The pizzas were ok but they wouldn’t be something I’d rush or recommend as a must when passing through Nelson.

We love a good Italian but not too keen to reorder here again. (Takeaway Order)
Ingredients not well distributed and very poor cutting of the slices. We had to hand rip up our pizzas because we didn't have a knife to cut it up properly, which caused the ingredients to slide around. Not the best Italian pizza we've had and in our case...it was not very picnic friendly.
I love achovies so I ordered the Napoli pizza but damn.... There is a reason why you got to spread out those anchovies evenly, so your not eating the entire ocean in one bite. After some adjustments, it's a good pizza.
There's a good variety of pizzas with classic Italian flavours to choose from, but they lack execution of the end product.

The pizza we ordered was a vegetarian one with spinach, mushrooms, onions and feta. I dont belive it was spinach,it tasted more like overcooked silverbeet. The base was thin which is nice but a bit slobby in the centre. The overall taste was very bland and at $31.50 for a medium size I found it overpriced too.

We have been regular customers for a LONG time and will NOT go back as they have lowered the standards that Stefano had set years ago. Really Crappy pizza and despite its easy access to the State Cinema, we will go elsewhere ...............Shame as it was the best at one time.

Ok pizzas but no atmosphere and little customer service.
Didn’t find the attitude from the owner(I assume) very friendly or welcoming.
No checking on our pizzas and no time ,although not busy to acknowledge us as we left the establishment.
Looking forward to seeing the new cinema in Richmond when it’s completed as competition lifts standards.
Oh and I haven’t stopped drinking water assumingly from the saltiness from the pizzas all night..😩

It's in the cinema, so it's not really going to have much in the way of atmosphere. Service was fine, small pizzas are not as small as you might expect! Decent choice and good value. Plenty of wine by the glass, $9.50/10. Good value - somewhere to go before or after a film, not the sort of place for an evening out.

I can't comment about the restaurant service because we had takeaway food from this restaurant but the pizza's were, I'm afraid, 'flacid'. A dull slightly soggy base with a limited range of ingredients on top. Not a place I'd go back to if I visited Nelson again.

We popped in without a booking which was not a problem, the staff all friendly and we thought the pizza and the dessert were absolutely great, they also had a good range of wine, thoroughly enjoyable night
