About
The Last Post was Oamaru's first Post Office, opened in 1864. There were several Lime Stone quarries in Oamaru during its formative years and The Last Post building was built using Casa Nova quarry stone, as was the historic bridge adjacent to the building. The old Post Office is the oldest public building in Oamaru and the only surviving public building by the prominent architect W.H. Clayton. The clock was never installed in the tower and further extensions were built to the south in 1875. By 1879 the building was considered inadequate for the purpose and a new Post Office was opened next door in 1884. The building was then used by government departments, including social welfare, until it was refurbished and opened as The Last Post Pub & Restaurant in 1992. The Last Post offers a gaming room, big-screen TV, an extensive menu covering snacks, lunch and dinner and a wide range of beverages to be enjoyed in either the main dining area, gaming room or our covered garden courtyard.

On a Monday night this place was packed with local people eating as well as a few tourists - always a positive sign re good food and value for money. The food was excellent, tasty, fresh and wholesome (we did not leave hungry). Lovely to experience a venue with local families - a great atmosphere with a lot of laughter and smiles.

We arrived in Oamaru tired and hungry, and decided to try one of the few places that were open on a Sunday evening.
What a wonderful surprise to have one of the best meals we’ve had in New Zealand! The pull-apart bread was amazing and the warm salad was so delicious. The biggest surprise was my husband’s meal. He ordered steak and he is very very picky, but he said it was one of the best steaks he’d had in his life and it was cooked perfectly!
Thanks so much for making our short stay in Oamaru delightful.

While chatting with a helpful employee at The Presence on Harbour gift shop, she recommended this local restaurant/pub. True to her word, during our time there, we didn't see any other tourists...which was fun!
We ordered two bowls of hearty Seafood Chowder and Cod Fillets. The portions were generous and reasonably priced. Our server was very friendly and attentive.

Excellent service from the phone booking with Trevor to the welcoming & efficient waitresses. Both of us had the (huge) steak, cooked to perfection accompanied by some nice Mt. Difficulty Pinot Noir. Very popular. Lovely historic building. Make sure you book.

This place was chosen weeks before as we had a sports event in town.
We had a table of 22 booked and was told arriving after us was another large booking. Who turned out to be competitors from same event.
The service was prompt staff appeared relaxed and the meals arrived in a timely fashion considering the kitchen had one chef and this place was busy.
Meals were generous and cooked to our liking.

We had an excellent meal here. I had the roast of the day which was pork, it was generous size, I ordered the medium size, the meals came out quickly and were piping hot which was great! Hubby ordered the chicken fillets and he enjoyed his too. The chocolate mud cake we had to finish was beautiful moist! Service was good too, we were made to feel very welcome.
Definitely worth a visit for a good meal while in Oamaru

Good menu, with tasty good sized meals. I really enjoyed my pork belly, and blue cod fish n chips are always a hit. Room with pool table and pokie machines. Friendly staff and patrons.

I decided to venture out by myself at this restaurant. Upon informing one of the staff one person only, the girl looked very hesitant to accommodate me. Feeling slightly gutted even mortified to be in the wrong place, I offered a revisit which normally does not eventuate anyway.
Then she became more accommodating, I decided to give it a go.the rib eye steak was good enough but slightly burned. The mushroom sauce was something I liked and chocolate sundae was delightful. One thing I was let down was that the staff tried to charge my bill to a large party group. I did say I am solo. By the way, is there anything wrong with having my time at a restaurant?

To give the cook a break, we went out for dinner. But everywhere was busy. The Last Post was the only restaurant who accepted us, adding there would be a delay of about fifteen minutes on their usual times.
Our waitresses were attentive and we were happy to chat while we waited. The wait was no longer than some restaurants normal.
Our meals were hot and fresh. Blue cod decent size fillets and crunchy batter and chips. Roast, so pleased went for medium size. it was huge! Seafood chowder delicious and plenty, Snitzel (it was snitzel night) cooked perfectly.
Thank you for squeezing us in without fuss.

Recently took the family for lunch on our way back from Dunedin to our home town Christchurch. This was our second visit, and much like the first a very pleasant experience. Food was great, waitress really great, couldn't really fault it,and very reasonably priced for what you get. Steak was well prepared and our two fish dishes were very well loaded and we left totally stuffed. Thanks The Last Post.

It was busy, but we were seated right away, still had tables. Our poor, flustered, young lady came over to get our order. As we were ordering drinks, a older women came by and whispered in her ear, we are not taking any more orders for 20 minutes or so. The poor server was overwhelmed and took pur drink order. Waited 10 min. got our drinks, but never came back for our order, they continued to seat people and people started to complain. After 20 min. I went up to the bar and asked about ordering food and she said the kitchen was backed up. We told the server we were leaving and left money for the drinks, she was speechless and just said OK. Really poorly managed, felt sorry for our server, they just left her alone in the front room and the whole incident with the woman coming up to her and whispering in her eye.

On the road it can be hard to find somewhere to eat on a Monday night - it’s always a bit of a lottery and Oamaru seemed no different.
A quick call to check it was open was promptly answered and a table reserved. Friendly greeting and shown to our table in the covered courtyard out the back.
Very friendly waitress worked out that engaging with the family banter was way better than ignoring it and she gave out a few friendly gibes.
The food was prompt and tasty- we had pork, steak, burger, fish and salad. All well received.

This restaurant is perfect, and fits into the Heritage Precinct of Oamaru so well. The atmosphere is delightful and the food options were all we needed. Local blue cod a favourite with our large group. The restaurant offers large or small portions (still very generous) so it suits everyone. The service is fantastic and we will most definitely return.

My first night in Oamaru I headed into the Pub because it looked very British - small, cosy and comfortable and I was dining alone. The service was not slow and the food was really tasty. Good beer and atmosphere.

A lovely little gastro pub with great atmosphere and friendly staff. The food is simple pub fare (steak, chicken, fish, toast of the day) but very well prepared and presented. My rib eye steak was great. Our meal was so good we went back the next night for seconds. Highly recommend.
