The Last Post was Oamaru's first Post Office, opened in 1864. There were several Lime Stone quarries in Oamaru during its formative years and The Last Post building was built using Casa Nova quarry stone, as was the historic bridge adjacent to the building. The old Post Office is the oldest public building in Oamaru and the only surviving public building by the prominent architect W.H. Clayton. The clock was never installed in the tower and further extensions were built to the south in 1875. By 1879 the building was considered inadequate for the purpose and a new Post Office was opened next door in 1884. The building was then used by government departments, including social welfare, until it…
Second visit in recent years and I can’t rate the seafood chowder enough , No carrots or potatoe as fillers, just pure Seafood! I should have taken a photo but for you big seafood lovers I’ll leave it up to you! Thank you to the...amazing chef for your creation ❤️More
This restaurant is perfect, and fits into the Heritage Precinct of Oamaru so well. The atmosphere is delightful and the food options were all we needed. Local blue cod a favourite with our large group. The restaurant offers large or small portions (still very generous)...so it suits everyone. The service is fantastic and we will most definitely return.More
A nice home cooked style meal, but given the price I would have expected a little bit more panache. The service was friendly and prompt. There is nothing preventing me from returning but likewise nothing drawing me back. The cheesecake was a little confusing with...apple sauce on top.More
Passing by & saw the sign for blue cod. Excellent food and service.
Gluten free option was available. We would loved to have tried the GF Brownie dessert, but too full.
Would definitely recommend & visit again.
After checking-in at our accommodation nearby - "Seascape on Tees" - we discovered we couldn't access the wifi there for reasons unknown. With news that our next accommodation provider in Dunedin had cancelled our booking at the last minute we needed somewhere to get wifi...and organise alternative accommodation for the following evening. The Last Post wasn't our last resort however it appropriately provided communication (after some teething issues) so thanks to them for that! Ironically we seldom, if ever, use wifi in business premises and are critical of people who do!
We just ordered drinks whilst we did some hasty research. We were siting in the games area beyond the bar and next to a large back room extension where meals were being served. These looked like typical pub food which was confirmed when a member of staff provided a menu to browse "just in case" we decided to eat there.
Staff were pleasant and we got "sorted" with somewhere to stay in our travels so all was well.
Our impression was it looked like a good place for a drink and/or a bar meal if you are in the area...and it provides free wifi too :-)
We visited in March, prior to Covid-19 lockdown.More
