Had lunch here. Quick and friendly service. Delicious food and great portions. Flavour of chips were a little weird but still an amazing place all round.

I arrived early without a reservation (17:45 hr) but was seated in the table of my choice. A couple were already dining but many of the empty tables had reserved cards on them. The menu I would describe as NZ/European. I ordered the ribeye (Scotch...fillet) steak rear to medium. It had been awhile since I had eaten steak and that was behind my choice. I think their signature dish would have been the blue cod (local fish) but I had recently eaten this dish. The steak came with garlic butter (my choice) and was nothing short of delicious. I also indulged in an apricot crumble for pudding washed down with a local porter and expresso. By the time I departed many of the previously empty tables had diners however the reserved tables were still waiting for their occupants.More

Stopped here for lunch, had the blue cod and it was superb. The fish arrives daily in the morning, you can't bet a fresh bit of blue cod. Excellent.

My husband and I stopped here for lunch ... the inside of the restaurant was a little dated and I admit to being worried, BUT the service was lovely and quick, and the food was delicious. Between us we had the blue cod (fresh in...each day) and the portobello mushroom, with crispy skin salmon, salad, tomatoes, garlic bread, and I think an aioli .... everything was so well cooked and just so tasty. Definitely a place we would recommend.More

Not much was open in Oamaru and we really just stumbled on Star & Garter. The warmth of the the owner Lisa's welcome set the tone. Best roasts we've eaten, extremely well priced and a good wine list. No room for desserts which looked yummy....A special atmosphere, supposed to be the 3rd oldest restaurant/cafe in NZ. Heartily recommend.More

We were welcomed and seated by a friendly waitress who did all the usual and good things. We both decided to have the blue cod but cooked different ways and with different sides. It was fresh and delicious and very well prepared. Small selection of...Scott's craft beers was appreciated and good wine list by the glass.More

Weekday lunch. Very professional and quick service. Good choice of menu and fish proved excellent. Comfortable seating and plenty of room. Star & Garter an authentic 19th century hostelry and very well-situated in the heritage part of the town. This was a return visit and...we wouldn't hesitate to go back.More

Sunday afternoon and very busy. No tables to spare after we took ours. We asked if we had to wait long and the owner said 20 minutes and it was only 20 minutes. The meal was lovely and hot, service very good and we were...made very welcome. The owner was very pleasant even though she was doing 100 things at once and looking after a large group of about 20 for a birthday party. YES! a woman or course!!More

Lovely location in old quarter. Apparently the oldest restaurant in Oamaru. Superb friendly service really set the tone when we walked in with no reservation and were warmly welcomed. Really liked the fact that most meals came in a choice of sizes. Unusual to see...but great idea. Our meals were all great.More
