A lovely find while on holiday. Beaut coffee, friendly staff and friendly locals . We were impressed. The coffee was 10/10 and we are sorry the cafe is so far away from our Welly home or we would be back tomorrow. Brioche /yum yum yum....Cheese scone - yum yum yumMore
Needed a caffeine fix after some early wandering around the streets looking at art etc. Came across Steam and tried their wares. Excellent coffee - but they also had cheese rolls. We're from the North Island and we just don't get them there - don't...know why as they're delicious. These didn't disappoint - hot and so very tasty. Please send the recipe to the North Island! (as an aside we didn't find many places around the bottom of the South that supplied them - sad!). Anyway - they were busy but service was pleasant and efficient. Would definitely recommendMore
Very let down with the following:
After ordering cabinet food with a staff member who obviously didn't want to be there, had no personality, no welcoming smile -
Waited 20 minutes, no sign of food, noticed others being served after us;
Upon enquiring when our...cabinet food would be served, staff member said "oh, what did you order?", we repeated our order;
5 minutes later food was delivered to our table with no apology, no sign of a smile, no personality;
After having nicer eating experiences there previously, we left really regretting we went there, very angry, very upset - and never again will we ever go there.More
We recently visited what was our favourite cafe in Oamaru for coffee and cake.
When we requested hot water on the side for our coffee as we have always done we saw the till read out said $1.00 hot water.
When we asked why the...charge, neither the server nor barista said they knew.
We declined the hot water but on checking the till receipt after the transaction, found we had been charged for it anyway.
We brought this to the server's attention and this was rectified.
Seriously Steam we frequent your cafe and have the coffee card to prove it, spend good dollars and have recommended you to others. Is this the best you can do for your customers?
We will not be returning.More

Our young staff member mistook your request as a request for hot water as a drink, which we charge one dollar to recuperate the cost of running the water staffing and the many other charges required to run the premises. We feel this was a...More
