Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We had sushi for lunch at the Harbour St Collective. No one on the counter so we had to queue for ten mins at the cafe just to pay. The salmon sushi was expensive at $12.50 for 8 pieces and totally tasteless. I think they...forgot the vinegar in the rice?? As no one was at the counter we couldn’t even comment or get extra vinegar. Very disappointing indeed.More

We were the only 2 in the restaurant for most of the time - should have been our first clue. Only one other table arrived. I ordered chicken bento box. The other order was dumplings to start then prawns. My chicken with plum sauce and...sour cream came out. It was small pieces, over cooked and dry. Nothing else came for a while. Then her pork dumplings. They were dry and tasteless. Then her main of prawns came out, with my salad. Then finally my plain steamed rice. No one took a drink order. We had to ask them the waitress took my order but just walked away before we could get the second thing ordered. My can of Sprite was delivered but no glass. Plain rice isn’t nice but luckily I had some plum sauce left over. What part of box didn’t they understand? It’s not supposed to come out in drips and drabs. The food wasn’t good. The service wasn’t good. Such a disappointment. It’s the only Japanese place in Oamaru and it’s blah.More

I hate writing bad reviews. This place was a train wreck. Very nice staff but other than that just awful. My friend and I had a bento box. Supposed to come with miso soup which never appeared, probably in Hind-site a blessing, bento Box was...not like anything I had had before in any Japanese restaurant. Tired lettuce, heaps of rice and something called teriyaki chicken. Tastes I’d never had before and I don’t mean that in a good way. My wife had a pie. Microwaved partly. My friends wife had taco again microwaved but again only partly which came out half cold this unfortunately still was enough to stuff the lettuce in the taco! Who microwaves lettuce!!Coffees were cold. Cheese chips tasted tainted maybe old oil.One had to q to order and the wait was far too long. Meanwhile to add to the ambiance the large door to the children’s playground was open more than closed with little darlings high on sugar and joy ran in and out and in and out and.... you get the picture. Not inexpensive and a real shame. My advice, go to MCDonalds. Normally I would talk to the staff but really the list was way too long oh and the q, againMore

I have to make it clear here that the food was prepared by a Japanese chef because the Sri Lankan chef, who takes control usually was on leave, which was honestly a bit of let down as I was keen to learn what food SL...chef would come up with. Told that it would take 10 minutes by a friendly Kiwi boy, it turned out that I had to wait for 30 minutes for Oamaru love Sushi and deep fried chicken Karaage. I was infuriated about the delay, making me miss the first 15 minutes of my law lecture. Anyway, learning how to define employees in the employment relations act, I started to munch sushi, which was surprisingly good. In fact, I love it though it was far from authentic Japanese Sushi. I may even visit it again hopefully the lecture that time would not be commercial contract act.More

Very helpful chef gave me a quick rundown on what he thought would suit me best being a newbie to Japanese cuisine and what was delivered did not dissapoint. In fact I was pleasantly surprised with the immaculate presentation and the tastes that ensued. Good...sized serving and at a reasonable price. I will be back for more for sure.More

DO NOT EVEN ENTER THE PREMISES! 🤬🤬🤬🤬Absolutely disgusting food! I have a seafood allergy, have dined in many Japanese restaurants with no trouble at all! Second meal out I couldn’t breathe and not eaten one thing... to be charged for the whole meal and not...eaten one thing just shows how low or how desperate they were for customers!!!! Would never recommend ever!!!!More

The teriyaki salmon was the best i have tasted in NZ. The blue cod was prepared splendidly and we both lapped up the udon soup.

My partner and I discovered this little out of the way restaurant in Oamaru. Without exaggeration, the sushi had to have been some of the best I have ever tasted, my partner felt the same way. The young man who served us was equally memorable,...his people skills were absolutely outstanding and made for the perfect dining experience.More

My husband and I love Japanese food so were excited to try Midori. Sadly the sushi was very average. There was SO much rice compared to fish, particularly on the nagiri. It filled your mouth with stodge that you just have to mulch through. Tempura...veggies were dripping with oil and the gyoza were crunchy and overcooked. This was Japanese food like I've never had it before and I've had a LOT. disappointing.More

Four of us went for lunch. We had a variety of dishes. The chicken karaage was very good, as were the various sushi combinations. Would have liked to try more, but too full.

Attended with wife and 4yo daughter. Nice, modern setting, with a pleasant courtyard to sit in if weather permits. The manager/waiter was friendly enough, but spent most of the time socialising with the cook in the kitchen, so was hard to attract his attention. Menu...had a nice variety, but once the food came out, it definitely appeared to be an interpretation of Japanese food. The gyoza were deep fried (should be pan fried and steamed), tempura crumbed rather than battered. The sushi rolls weren’t rolled well. If you’re wanting an authentic Japanese food experience, you’ll be disappointed.More
