We were at the Harbour Street Collective Cafe in Oamaru on Sunday 5th June and witnessed the most bizarre behaviour, in our opinion, by any cafe employee ever imaginable. We saw an older female working in the open kitchen area of the cafe launch a...tirade of swearing and abuse at a customer for simply querying an unacceptable delay. The female employee claimed to have had a tough day and certainly mentioned that fact in her outbursts. The employee outright refused a refund for drinks which never arrived. This refusal was yelled out a total of three times. The profanities we witnessed and the overbearing behaviour by this older female employee was simply beyond belief. Nobody, let alone paying customers, should ever have to witness this sort of behaviour. Of note was that a pleasant younger employee who had witnessed the abuse did refund the customer.More

I waited 45+ minutes today for one hot drink. I went up to the counter to ask whether they could put it in a takeaway cup or not for me and was shooed away and waited another 10 minutes. Coffee came and although apologetic about...the wait, the coffee was burnt and the milk was lukewarm. I didn't seem to be the only person with this issue. I had seen 2-3 people go up waiting for their coffees as well. They had 4-5 staff on so I wasn't sure why it took this long to make one coffee.More

Stopped for coffee and Cheese Rolls The Coffee was like dish water and tasteless to boot. The cheese rolls were soggy and limp. Not how they should be served. I am an unashamed coffee snob and love a good coffee. Sadly there are so many...poor to mediocre places out there.More

Pretty regular customers here but starting to loose interest rapidly. It’s so hit and miss, sometimes the coffee is brilliant and other times it’s poor at best. Always a long wait, even with just a handful of customers. Breakfast items often missing off of plates...of food, have been in for lunch one day and popped in the next for a morning coffee to find the bottle of water and cups we left the previous day still sitting uncleaned in the same spot. Begs the question if they’re not cleaning these things up, how’s their hygiene levels in the kitchen (as a chef working in hospo your mind wonders to these things!) Final straw for me today when I came in to order a take away flat white, waited 20 minutes for it, counted 8 customers- 4 of which already had food and coffee, and when it arrived it was frothy like a cappuccino, watery and barely tastes of coffee. Not worth $6. This will be my last trip here! Shame, it has so much potential.More

Portions look generous and the cakes looked good. We weren't tempted by the savoury selection and settled for a coffee and muffin which was good.

We popped in here for a late lunch before heading to Steampunk HQ. There wasn't a lot on offer in terms of cabinet food. The food was very slow coming out. It was okay, nothing flash. It was cold inside and we ended up moving...as far away from the front door as we could and sitting huddled in our jackets.More

When there about 10 am waitress ignored us for a few mins she was as cold as the temperature in the shop, absolute freezing. Couldn't order 2 things off the menu should have taken this as a sign to run. Had to ask again what...we ordered 110min after we sat down. Went here as rating was a five, had hash browns that I would have thought be home made but looked eacctly like the ones you get at mc donalds obviously of the frozen variety. If I was after something I cook at home then I would have stayed at home. Food was mediocre and didn't eat it all as was quite disappointed coffeewas really good as for breakfast stick to cakes and biscuits for sale at counter and eat somewhere else.More

Absolutely has to be the worst service I've ever had , Rang to ask when the kitchen for midori was closing and was made aware that they close at 2pm , so I come in at 12:30 to place a takeaway order making sure I...had plenty of time before they close , asked for the different things I wanted was told I couldn't have 3 of the 5 things I wanted because they didn't have the products to make them , then was told if I wanted salmon sushi they wouldn't make any fresh I had to the the warm stuff that had been sitting out of the bench all day , then five minutes after I place my order they put the menus away at 12:45 , when they told me over the phone the menu were away at 2pm if my partner and I had come in for lunch like we were going to at 1pm we wouldn't not have been served !More

Went out for brunch today with a group of 12 people. Coffee was good but the eggs on toast was terrible. Eggs were poached but they were solid and overcooked. Presentation was not appealing. Service was also very slow and the cafe wasent busy. Have...ordered sushi here before and even with the restaurant being completely dead quiet it is a 30 minute wait.More

Slow service, no choice for vegans at all, a few of the same sad choices for vegetarians that are offered in every other cafe. The Japanese food is also not good. Again, sad choices for vegetarians and presented and served with a lack of care...and thought. Not even a veggie sushi choice to take away. So disappointing as it could be so good.More
