About
Located in Kaikoura’s township, where it’s just a 3 minute walk to the beach, in our beautiful, nature-filled picturesque town. This is where the snow-laden mountains meet the sea. The choice is yours: - Eat your fish n chips at Coopers Catch, on one of its outdoor picnic tables and enjoy the view of the mountains. - Or walk across to the beach and enjoy nature at its best. On the menu you can expect, classic fish n chips, homemade seafood chowder, mussel fritters & paua fritters. The catch of the day is usually Tarakihi or Deep Sea Cod or both, either of which is well worth a try. All of the fish served at Coopers Catch is freshly cooked to order. Catch Your own There is no wonder this has become so popular, simply go fishing across at the beach or book a local fish charter boat and fish with the experts. However, you catch it, Coopers Catch will cook up the days catch for you, along with a selection of whatever you desire.

I have had fish and chips here a few times in the past. I would’ve rated them 5 stars, but not now. They had no blue cod (their signature fish) and I was advised they hadn’t served blue cod since before Christmas (which is contrary to another review). Instead we had tarikihi (x 2) and large chips for 2 adults . Fish was lovely but the serving size for the chips was very small. A large portion of chips at my local fish n chip shop would be more than sufficient for 2 adults, but this was not the case today. Very disappointing. I had high expectations but these were not met.

We have been to Cooper’s twice in two days. Very obliging staff and delicious food Our seafood chowder came at our request with toast instead of the menu offering of garlic bread. The chowder serve was a good size and tasted delicious needing no seasoning Next time we had their world famous chips and prawns- also top choices for us Tables out the front allow you to interact with the local seagulls

In my most humble opinion, this place could, by some margin, teach MANY English fish & chip shops a thing or two. Beautiful chips, soft in the middle and crispy on the outside, just as they should be. Yes the fish was not huge but actually it was about right, fried crispy but with lovely succulent fish inside. None of it was greasy and you can’t say that about lots of chip shops in the uk. Oh yes and by the way, fish & chips for ten dollars, five pounds? What exceptional value!

Being as we spent the day near the sea it felt appropriate to have fish n chips for dinner whilst in Kaikoura. Ratings looked good and it was busy when we walked past so we decided to eat here tonight. We ordered the cod with shoestring fries. I’m not sure how this restaurant copes day to day. It took 45 minutes before we received our order - I don’t think I’ve ever waited more than 15 minutes in my life for fish n chips. The restaurant is therefore full of people sitting waiting for their food and no one can sit inside to eat! The food itself is- chips were good, batter on the fish crispy but cod didn’t really taste great.

I paid NZ$19.50 for fish and chips, only to receive one small, skinny piece of fish. I shared my disappointment with the owner about how unpleasant the meal was, but they were dismissive and claimed the price was for the vegetables included in the meal. That explanation doesn’t justify the poor quality or value. This experience was very disappointing, and I definitely wouldn’t recommend this place or go back again.

Staff were lovely but the meal was not. We got a fish that when you held it oil oozed from it onion rings were just as greasy and I had a broccoli cheese bite which was tiny for the price and tasted like crumbed vomit. The pineapple ring was the only good thing. Very disappointing, most of its in the bin.

The tall white waitress in this restaurant is such a shameless racist. She is arrogant to the non-white tourists. We asked her to recommend popular dishes and she said "Everything is in the menu", she basically refused to answer any of our questions and only repeated "Everything is in the menu". She changed to a different face when serving the white customers. The salad she brought to our table was gone off.

Bought catch of the day fish and chips. You select size of fillet you want. We had 110 gm pieces of Snapper. Absolutely beautiful. Huge and very fresh fish, lightly battered when you select. We took home f&C's and added a bit of salad for a restaurant quality meal for much less than cost of one main. Fish pieces seem to vary in price but around $10-12. Ours were huge and a slightly bigger piece would have fed 2.

We have been coming here for years, the fish + chips had always been excellent and well priced. We have been twice in the past 3 months and both times we have been shocked at the portion sizes. Definitely smaller than usual, we ordered 2 scoops of chips + 2 large snappers and left feeling hungry (and ripped off) both times. Won't be visiting again for over $40...

Stop by for a quick bit on our way though town. Went for a meal for $16.20. Fish & chips , with some coleslaw and sauce. Because we were a little bit of a rush we did even realize that the meal did not even give you a discount it’s just the same price haha Well well for $16 for a fresh fish and chips I was expecting to have a big meal and some good flavor. But the plate I was served was really small, the fish was really dry(tasted just like frozen fish) and the meal was not at all that good. Well everyone like different things but for me this was not a good meal.

We were passing through towards Picton and decided to stop here for lunch. We ordered Chips and Seafood sticks. The chips were very hot and crispy which was nice but the batter on the Seafood sticks was a little soggy and bland. It was a rainy day so we had to sit indoors which lacks any atmosphere. But there are outdoor seating options for a sunny day.

Being in kaikoura we thought we would order some lovely fresh fish,so we ordered (crumbed) Dory ended up having (over cooked) crispy battered Dory. I'm afraid definitely not recommended ! oily and overcooked.

We ordered Snapper and Chips. The snapper was tasty and fresh but the chips were very greasy having absorbed a lot of the cooking oil. Ordered an egg to go with it and this was solid and well burnt on the bottom. So overall the badly coked chips and egg spoiled what would have been an acceptable meal.

This busy little takeaway shop has the best Paua Fritters my husband and I have ever had. The fish and chips were drained so we didn't experience a mouth full of oil with each mouth full. Thank you guys
