At first you wouldn't give credit that this little gem could provide for a very good meal but as we were sitting there with a drink the place was getting busy and some of the dishes coming out were looking great so we decided to give it a go! I had the Crayfish half for $50 - well worth it and my wife had a fresh whitebait omelette. Needles to say we tried each others meal. The roast veges were a little bit one sided to the potatoes but everything was cooked well. Highly recommend.

When the four of us visited the place, it was a bit crowded, and were told, after ordering, that it will take 45min or so for the food to be served. After 90min of waiting, we were told that one of our orders (fish of the day) was no longer available! After having the order changed, we waited another 20min for our food to come.
The plus side was the crayfish - very good!

We had decided to visit on account of some reviews
While we were perusing the menu on the window outside, a pushy little dark haired female came out and said, without a smile, something like "well, are you coming in?" We essentially ignored her and carried on looking through the menu. We decided to go in to compare their food with the beautiful place we had been the day before.
This place's same sized crayfish part of which was undercooked was $90.00, and the other place's, beautifully cooked, was $57.00. The same ignorant waitress clearly showed she did not give a shiv.
We had one very efficient waitperson at the other place, same number of customers here with three waitstaff who I would not rate although the one male tried his best. The third could not speak English.
The food was fine. However, I have found my go-to in my first visit to Kaikoura. It is not the Strawberry Tree and that is solely because of the earlier mentioned waitress with an up yours attitude.

This place came recommended but didn't live up to the bill . Meals took and hour and weren't up to the required standard . The steak came In at 30 bucks and we were told we could surf and turf and add scallops . Loved that idea until the surf part of the meal ended up being 4 of the smallest scallops you have ever seen at an extra cost of 12 bucks. Really want to support these local businesses but for that price things simply have to be better .

Well what a journey and experience.. We went in for dinner at 7pm, sat down and seen quite afew people sitting at the tables looking far from happy. We ordered an entree which came out at 8pm, the mussels were cold and the scallops were stuck together in a battered mess, still the tables around us were looking less and less enthused about the current situation waiting on there main meals. We decided to abandon ship at 8:30 and asked if we could cancel the mains if they haven’t already started.. the mains hadn’t been started and we luckily got out of there.
As we left we took one final look around and seen most of the customers looking mildly confused and malnourished about the situation.
The outfit needs more staff, a decent chef and a supply of firewood as it was like sitting on a chair lift at rainbow ski field.

Over an hours wait for out food. When we enquired they said it was 5 to 10 minutes away and it still didn't arrive. The waitress couldn't even work out what the kitchens system was as people who ordered after us got food before us. There was no explanation when we asked for a refund and they didn't want our reasons because they were apologising and handing out refunds to lots of people.

was told 30-40 mins wait which was ok...however 1.5 hours later mains were served before starters. 2 dishes (vege burger) had to be sent back as they were cold. the beetroot salad had manky leaves and none of the advertised balsamic dressing (different dressing provided on request). steaks were average and they forgot the side of fries (reimbursed). and finally the lemon lime and bitters should have been called flat warm and disappointing.

Kaikoura, great town, great walks, walk around the point to South Bay and see Seals, Penguins, and if lucky see Orcas patrolling outside the rocks. But while here you must have the Kaikoura Crayfash. Tried 'The Cray Pot' no crayfish on the menu )-: yes Cray Pot with no crays, but nice looking fish & Chips though.
Try Strawberry Tree, only place with crays, really? Okay Ordered half crayfish and whitebait fritter.
Atmosphere great, out back had the rustic look but functional and clean.
The whitebait fritter was a large portion with seasoned chips and salad, but the crayfish on the other hand,I felt 'short changed' for the price, I've caught crayfish myself and applied the legal measuring test and this one I would have to measure it several times before I was happy that i could keep it.
Unfortunately I did not see the the crayfish before it was over cooked perhaps I should ask to see it first in future crayfish purchases. Woodstock 17's cray (review below) looks tinny. Mine was the same.

This is an old style English pub inside with a roaring fire. We booked for 6.30 and they were ready and welcoming on a cold night. By 7 pm they were full and new comers were taking tables in their outside garden area.
My husband and I both had blue cod fresh caught that day. It was delicious. Accompanied by a wide variety of roast vegetables and a nice sauce which complimented the fish and did not overwhelm it. My husband had tomato soup which he enjoyed. Presentation was very good. The wine list was good. This pub would do well in any city or town you could name.
This was recommended to us by a local and clearly it is a favourite of locals as there were plenty of them there.
We are currently in level 2 lockdown and they were observing all the rules.

We drove past and saw roast lamb of the day on the board out the front. Coming from Australia we thought how fabulous would that be to have lamb. We waited 15 minutes before someone acknowledged us and were to find a table and I will be with you. Another 15 minutes went by and the waitress took our order, sorry no lamb today but I will go upstairs to check with the chef. No definitely no lamb. Ok pasta is fine we will have that. Another two couples sat at tables either side of us and to our surprise yes we have lamb, how many would you like to order. We just looked at each other in dismay. We overheard them say, when theirs came out it was cold and tasteless. More people came in for meals and they appeared to have run out of everything and lots of people waiting looking very disappointed. Our meals were admittedly very nice pasta, but why have it on the board and seat people at a table and after they have looked over the menu tell them no we have sold out, taking up more of their time. I have worked in hospitality 15 years and the place was so disorganised and only one lady on till 6 pm. Such potential here, but more communication and front of house needs to know more of what the kitchen is doing.

Service was average but ok. We had crayfish which was delicious but overpriced at $80 dollars, we've since paid much less for a whole crayfish. Dessert was super disappointing, I ordered a Sundae which was three small scoops of vanilla ice-cream and chocolate sauce in a bowl. No wafer, no squirty cream, no cherry.
What give this place three stars was the nice outdoor area and the live music was a nice touch. Definitely made us stay for an extra drink.
Overall, a little bit average.

We went tonight because after popping in earlier in the day the lovely owner Mark was so entertaining and passionate about the food, history and service we felt we needed to go back for a meal. Was not disappointed. Actually one of the best meals my husband and I have had on our wee roadie around NZ. The food blue COD was beautiful. Had two ways as fish and chips and as the meal of the day. Excellent. Thank you.

Waited an hour and half for our meal. We were told the only available table was 6.30pm, so we rushed in, ordered, then did not receive our food until 8pm. Others were arriving, being served and leaving while we waited.
Food was average at best when it arrived.
We were not the only ones with a long wait, at least two more tables said they had waited over an hour too.
Wait staff however friendly and helpful. No reflection on them.

Really good food, but prices are on the upper end. Fun pub atmosphere and friendly staff.
Unfortunately we experienced a lack of management, as food and drink deliver was super chaotic. We had to wait 1,5 hours for our food. It was busy, but not packed.

I had a great time eating here with some friends. I highly recommend the Baked Camembert starter and the Duck Special main. The menu has lots of veggie options so everyone was catered for. The staff were able to suggest meals and everyone tried and loved the Jackfruit burger. The atmosphere was fun without being too loud and there was even some live music!
