Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We walked in on a busy evening. Told there would be a half hour wait, great they told us up front. Enjoyed some beers before meal arrived about the time they had told us. Steak was pretty good, rest of the food OK. Could do...better but a reasonable atmosphere and all OK. Staff could be a bit friendlier though, seemed a bit of an inconvenience.More

I wish I could rate it more but when you have a monopoly in kaikoura I can see why the chef doesn’t care. We ordered the large ribs and Dijon chicken. The “Large” ribs came with small 6 ribs, undercooked fries, and a limp salad...with a Watties dressing. The Dijon chicken had a massive 2 cup mash plus vegetables and a tiny flat milky white chicken breast. Come on, do better with food. I guess if you’re here for drinks then come to a low energy bar to get more depressed.More

Arrived in Kaikoura on a Tuesday at midday after just over two weeks touring NZ. The top three restaurants were all closed…..what? Is this not supposed to be the summer peak season. As a result we had limited options and the Whaler was one of...them. The pub was rammed with a 45/60 minute wait for food. OK we ordered and were happy to wait as we were ravenous. After two weeks in NZ we can recite the menus without opening them: 1.Garlic Bread 2. Chowder 3. Calamari 4. Fish & chips Having said that the F&C when they came were very good. Another three weeks in NZ and I’m not sure how many more F&C we can eat. For a country that has no recognised National dish, the food is becoming very repetitive.More

What you would expect, reasonable pub grub. Would recommend the green lipped mussels. Also free digital juke box to get your vibes on.

Service was good and food came out quickly but food very average for price. The falafel burger was made of small individual falafels that I think were microwaved to death. Even a steak knife couldn’t cut through them.

For a casual night with friends, this place is just the ticket, good selection of beer and wine and variety of food, we chose the famous south island blue Cod and chips, and it didnt disappoint. Huge portions and delivered to your table very quickly....Nice friendly staff and great ambience, would we go again, you bet we would.More

Visited Oct 2023 for a few drinks. Bar staff really friendly. Beer superb and wine likewise. It's a lovely old pub with a warm atmosphere. We went up on the roof terrace where there are lovely views of the mountains. Would revisit anytime.

There was a nice atmosphere in this pub. It was warm and cosy and a great way to finish a walk along the seafront. We did go upstairs to the rooftop terrace, but the screens weren’t very clean so we couldn’t see the view well....It was cold anyway, so we went back downstairs.More

We’ve had some great times at the Whaler on previous trips but tonight we got service from someone more akin to a Bronze Whaler. Sharp, Rude and Passive Aggressive from the outset, despite the fact we spent a considerable sum of money. …More

We arrived and initially the service was prompt and attentive. When ordering our meals, I specifically asked about how steaks were cooked as I prefer pink, but not raw, so asked if medium rare would be appropriate. The server was rather terse saying “steak is...our speciality and we know how to cook it”. So I didn’t question, but needless to say, medium rare arrived with the majority of the steak be totally rare (raw) beyond the very edges. I should have sent it back, but didn’t want to be challenged…. Then after our meals arrived, we were totally ignored, no one asked us for another beverage, how the meals were, to clear away dishes, etc. Our server was now behind the bar dnd the other 3 on the floor continually walked past us until I finally stopped one of them…. Very disappointing experience and definitely wouldn’t return.More

Decent pub style bar and eatery. The blue cod and chips was great and the seafood chowder was likewise enjoyed. Busy and popular on a Saturday night

Ordered the chef’s special pasta.. served in a bowl. A bowl smaller then a bowl I’d serve myself a bowl of yogurt or cereal. Perfect amount for a toddler maybe? Amounted to about five fork-fulls or fettuccine. I think I could have made this from...the store for $3.50 and paid $30. Needless to say I went home hungry… service, beer and bartender(women) were awesome. Thoroughly disappointed by food quantity, taste was there but didn’t last longMore

We had dinner in this restaurant where the kitchen is open until 9 PM. The seafood chowder was good and we had a nice Pinot wine with it. Service was timely and friendly.
