Visited Hokitika for our anniversary weekend, popped into Stumpers for a few beverages before dinner at the hotel ... then came back as we couldn’t get a table at the hotel restaurant.
In spite of the current COVID restrictions NOT being observed by either staff or patrons, we enjoyed the overall atmosphere of the Friday night crowd.
The drinks and food service was quick and friendly even though they were very busy. The food was reasonably priced and decent portions, we were both bursting at the seams after bread & dips and a main.
The .5 was lost by one particular employee who was a little short with me when I went up to the cafe counter to order food, I was supposed to wait at the table. We were at a bar leaner not a table and had spent a good 5-6 minutes deciding yet no staff had approached us, so I merely assumed I had to go to the bar. The bar person very kindly (literally) redirected me to the cafe counter.
But, overall, a nice evening out.

A busy evening but the service was surprisingly quick. We had tried to book but were told just to arrive and that they were busy.
The staff were efficient and came to check twice that all was well. And it was. I had the Morrocan Lamb salad and my husband the Chicken Caesar salad. Both were beautifully presented and very tasty. We felt the salads were a little overpriced but as it is peak holiday time, we understand that prices can be up there.
Would recommend this restaurant if travelling into Hokitika.

We had a lovely meal at Stumpers before going to watch the sunset. The main menu already looked great and we were spoilt for choice before the waitress described the daily specials with some real delights. The staff were really friendly, great atmosphere and the food was lovely. If we were in Hokitika for longer we would've been back many times.

was in today 16th July around 1130 w a girlfriend from greymouth for lunch we hadn't had breakfast because we were looking forward to a great meal that is usually at stumpers wow we were disappointed . Being a business owner and having alot of history in the cafe restaurant industry and a qualified barista it was very disappointing we thought we would start with a Big coffee so we ordered a caramel latter bowl and then order later . We sat down the young girl who made our coffee brought coffees out to us and it was very disappointing had no taste had no crema and was frothy as like old style cappuccinos and so was my girlfriends so because in these days we pay alot for coffees it should atheist be drinkable it was so i took them back informed the young girl that both coffees were terrible and could we have new ones but could I please get someone else to make it as well .so I think the new lady who was short w curly hair made our coffees and brought them out again we greeted her politely and no smiles nothing no apology given my coffee again looked terrible tasted like water again and I couldn't drink it .the only bonus was is my girlfriends tasted heaps better . I could drink it so I left it what a shame stumpers your coffee is normally on point well it wasn't today .I normally not one to complain but as a customer we pay bloody good money for our coffees these days so that means they should always be good.very very disappointing stupmers even the food wasn't the best either way to expensive for the amount we got and chips were cold i wontbe in a hurry to go back thats for sure picture below is my no crema frothy water tasting no caramel latte bowl disgusting. Maybe needing training from your supplier.

We arrived at 8 pm. We were asked where we wanted to sit, we pointed out a table and were taken over. As we we about to sit down another staff member ran over and said we couldn’t sit there, as they were closing down the four corner tables. Instead we were offered a small spot squished in between two other bench seats!
I ordered the chicken supreme, at $36.50.
I got a small bit of chicken with a wing. It was extremely boring and over cooked. The plate was stacked with potatoes and undercooked carrots.
My partner ordered the fish of the day.
He was asked if he wanted 1 or 2 fillets, he ordered 1. When it arrived it was tiny..less than half a fillet. He had the same vegetable offering...terrible!
Half way through our meal, the staff started putting up the chairs on to all the surrounding tables. We felt very unwelcome.
We had to move tables for the dessert as the area we were in was closed down just before 9 pm. We had to move everything ourselves. Given the poor quality of desserts we would have been better advised to have left after the mains!
The staff were friendly to the locals but aloof and looked annoyed at anyone else.
Never again!!

My family and I stopped for lunch here on the Greymouth. Average food, and horrible service. The person taking our order looked and talked to at as if we could not speak English and upon learning we could, was just so rude. Horrible experience

Disappointed, we have eaten here a few times before and returned today even though we had a discount voucher for the restaurant over the road. My wife ordered the ribeye and was very specific in her request for no black pepper. I ordered the Chicken Supreme as I like stuffed chicken breast and am not a lover of ‘bone in’ chicken. When the meals arrived the waitress informed my wife that the potatoes had pepper on, in spite of the no pepper request. My chicken breast was in fact a chicken quarter with wing. The place is pleasant enough and the staff too, however for a premium price I expect to have dietary requests adhered to and meals to be as described on the menu.

We stopped here for one night - arriving quite late. We were unsure where would be open/have food. This spot was so busy! The staff were very helpful about getting us a table. The lamb was delicious, very succulent - and very generous portions.

Stumpers is very cosy and welcoming. The menu is good and the food tasty. A great place to relax after a day travelling. Our waitress (I think her name was Ngahuia) was friendly and made us feel genuinely welcome and at home.

Had dinner here, they were really busy but managed to seat us without too much of a delay.
Ordered the Garlic Loaf to start with - waitress gave a lovely wee sigh when I asked for some side plates.
Ordered the "Pasta of the Day" which was described as pasta with bacon and mushrooms in a creamy sauce with parmesan. It was priced at $26.50. What turned up would have cost them about $3.00 to make. It was the dry spiral pasta with a few bacon bits and even fewer mushrooms, the sauce itself was watery however they were generous with the parmesan (it was the only thing on the plate with any taste). It was absolutely rude that we paid $53.00 for two plates of the slop they served up.
Wouldn't recommend, definitely would not go back and have to say that it was our worst meal during our entire trip of the South Island.

Decided on our second night in Hoki we wanted a steak. Stumpers stood out as one of the most popular eats. We ordered a prime NZ Porterhouse steak with green peppercorn sauce. Perfectly cooked to medium rare and the sauce was awesome (note I'm fussy with my sauces, being a retired chef). My daughters were also wrapped with their selections of white bait omelette and kids mixed platter. Service was also really friendly and we didn't have to wait long for our meals. Totally recommended.

Lunch here was great. It was very busy but we got a table OK. Took a few minutes in queue to place our order but meal came out relatively quickly. We both had the beef burger which was tasty and served with fries on a wooden board. Nice to be able to have a wine and beer with our meal. Staff were friendly.

Ate there twice, there are really few ‘smart’ places to eat, so you have to live with that. Had venison steaks once (quite good) with reasonable chips but salad somewhat dull. Second time belly pork - more CB like a cheap fatty pork chop with stuffing in the middle. Probably the worst BP I have ever experienced. Others had Moroccan lamb salad (rated highly), lamb shanks (average), nachos on lots of cheese (an OK starter and pasta (ok but not nice enough to finish). Deserts average and expensive. Many main course dishes approaching $40. Service friendly enough using local staff.

The staff were very welcoming. The food came very quickly and was a large plateful. We had the whitebait omelette as we thought we would try the local delicacy. The meal was filling and wholesome but we felt the whitebait was somewhat disappointing and overpriced. But we would certainly recommend the restaurant.

Ok so the food isnt great here, basic bit fills a hole. The kind of place that doesn't warrant a review until Fran steps up.
Fran appears to be the manager, arrogant, rude and unhelpful. She couldn't wait to show her impatience when taking order. When asked if a dish contained an alleging she replied "how am I meant to know, I dont cook it".
Slammed drinks and plates down on table.
To top it all off she took drinks orders once in bar area and left them sitting g at opposite end of bar for us to collect ourselves.
A horrible old woman that knows nothing of true kiwi hospitality.
