Absolutely delicious! Attentive service too. We had the Beef Wellington and the lamb and could highly recommend both. Salt and Pepper Squid was perfect for sharing, and each of us had our own dessert. With wine and coffees, the dinner was a very reasonable $US 140 for three adults. Do not miss this gem in Hokitika!

Best food and service on the west coast!

An amazing experience right from when we asked for a dinner menu earlier on in the day right to when we left was amazing hospitality from all staff, we started with an entree of garlic bread which was amazing, then had our mains i had the twice cooked pork belly and it just melted in your mouth and my partner had the lamb shoulder which was just as delicious both served with fries and a house salad, Then we continued on to having a dessert which was the creme brulee with a homemade shortbread and it was to die for. They also had a great 2 piece band playing to bump up the atmoshpere. All in all was the best experience and food we have had up the west coast and is definetly a must go to when in hokitika.

A pleasant surprise.

Excellent welcome and service, food was of a high standard cooked with flair and from the heart. The braised Lamb shoulder was excellent properly braised, soft and moist. The accompanying pea and mint puree was of a correct texture. The mussels were perfectly cooked and moist. As a retired chef who worked in the west end of London for 37 years I can say that the chefs understand the foundations of cookery here at Thatcher and Small. The service was professional and friendly. I wish this establishment and the team all the best for the future and i know that they will push on and deliver more gastronomic delights for tier diners in the future. Well done and keep up the great team work.

Don't waste your money, go somewhere else.

We went out for a family breakfast. I didn't feel like any of their breakfast options and opted for their Create a Plate. I ordered two sides of bacon (along with a few other things), which their system couldn't handle and I got charged twice for the Create a Plate option ($7 instead of $3.50) and my two sides of bacon turned out to be 4 very small streaks of bacon that set me back $13.60. On top of that, the attitude from the FOH staff was not great and the coffee was nothing to write home about. I will not be going to Thatcher & Small again. They may be hitting all the marks with the aesthetics of the cafe but I'd rather have breakfast at the local pub where the staff are friendly and you get good value for money.

Very Poor Service

My husband and I came here for dinner tonight. We arrived at 7:15pm, and were seated by 7:20. We ordered drinks at 7:25, which arrived promptly. We placed our dinner order at 7:30. At 8:40 (after seeing other patrons who arrived after us being served), I flagged our server down and asked if our appetizer (entree) would be coming out soon. She said she’d check on it. At 8:45 she had not delivered, nor did she communicate the status of our order. At this point, we were fuming…my husband went to the bar and told them to give us our check and cancel our dinner order. They explained that they had new inexperienced employees. After my husband paid the bar tab, a man (whom I assume was a manager?) came over to me and showed me the kitchen ticket that had a time stamp which indicated that our order had not been placed until 8:20!!! Unacceptable, to say the least. Very disappointed!

Nice decor, friendly but too slow

Lovely friendly staff, nice decor, but need to speed up service! We had steak and fish both came with salad and chips. Another table had 2 courses while we were waiting and we only got our food when we complained ! It was ok but not worth the wait !

Good food, service could be better

This restaurant was recommended to us by the host of our air bnb so we decided to check it out. The food was good and the beer selection was also good. However we did wait over 45mins for breakfast on a day which was not particularly busy. All of the FOH staff were very pleasant and friendly, except for who I assume was the manager/team leader. He walked around very arrogantly and was not welcoming or friendly whenever we interacted with him.

New To Hokitaki

Exactly what Hokitaki needed an upmarket cafe/bar menu to suit all dining options. Very nice staff the food delivery can be a bit slow at times but hopefully this will improve. Overall a good dining experience plus it's value for money.

Ordered a sirloin steak, it arrived after very long wait. It didn’t appear to be sirloin and looked and tasted like a bad piece of rump, tough and grisly, and devoid of any fat. Told a staff member who told the kitchen. I didn’t think it was the chefs cooking more poor meat quality. No reduction in our bill was offered. Won’t patronise this restaurant again, the wait time was long which we felt was to encourage more drink purchases.

Underwhelmed by the food

I love how the new owners renovated the place and I am really impressed by the amount of toilets! Although I was a little underwhelmed by the menu. You would expect more interesting items from a new funky place nowadays. Hokitika has so much potential with the amount of tourists getting through and lack of aggressive competition. I ordered the squid salad and left hungry. I didn't feel like topping up with a bowl of fries that would set me back for nearly $12. Although the fries looked very yummy! The outdoor area is really pleasant and good to see that they make the most of a quiet road.

Top food and service

I booked a table here a few days in advance as we stayed in Hokitika over Easter and I had read good reviews. We sat outside which was warm enough with the outside heaters. Right from the start the service was top tier, we were greeted straight away given menues and water. All staff were great. We tried the thatcher and small beer which was nice and light, I didn't see the cocktail menu but heard other patrons exclaim how good they were. I enjoyed the grilled mussel entre and the bao buns. The bao buns were exceptionally good!! My partner loved his main of the chicken snitzel with buttermilk and panko crumb. I enjoyed fresh Tarakihi grilled fish. We then shared the skillet cookie for dessert which was 10/10. The experience was so good we went back for coffee the next morning. Great coffee and flavorsome scone!!

Food so good you don’t want it to end!

So good we went two nights running! Excellent food and beautifully presented. Serving staff are very efficient and probably need one more to ease the busy times. There can be a bit of a wait but that’s a good thing - it’s all cooked from scratch and to order. Beef Wellington superb, beats Gordon Ramsay’s in Dubai hands down!!

Dinner after a long drive.

Went here on recommendation and reviews. Quite busy but we got a table. Staff really friendly. Shared a Grilled Muscle starter. Then had Beer battered fish n chips and twice cooked pork belly. FnC was good, one piece of pork was a bit crispy and dry and the sauce a bit salty for me but I am salt sensitive. So yes a good place to eat.

Great, fresh, quality food in a lively establishment.

Well the profile photo does not do this place justice. Hokitika is not a sophisticated town so we were expecting to find simple food served in an old fashioned way, nothing wrong with that, but we were delighted to find this place busy and serving fabulous steak, beef Wellington and fresh salads. The beer was excellent too. Somewhere between a pub and a restaurant I would highly recommend.

The restaurant is on the main street and includes an outside sitting area. We had the Beef Wellington and the catch of the day. We thought the food was delicious and the service was professional and friendly, even though they were quite busy.
