The squeeze had the seafood chowder which was a much better choice than my whitebait “patties” which were lacking flavour. I was grateful she shared her onion rings which were super.
The Opawa Sauvignon Blanc was excellent, but at $50 a bottle seemed a gouge too far. Why is NZ wine so pricey in NZ?
There were 4 groups of more than 8 on other tables but the service was nevertheless quick and pleasant.
We were staying in the Beachfront Hotel and golf we met en route recommended the food. The cooked part of the buffet breakfast was average at best.

We had a mixed experience here. My husband’s steak and chips were great.... my whitebait patties and chips were just ok. Especially my chips were cold whereas his ( which were more like wedges) were lovely and hot so luckily he shared some of his with me.
Service was ok... our waitress seemed really friendly to hubby and ignored me a bit. Was a bit funny in the end. When we asked if we could just charge back to the room which is standard practice for a hotel, we were told we couldn’t... this was very odd.

We had a voucher to use here as we were staying in the hotel. Comfortable seating area and friendly staff, the views would be great during daylight - its overlooking the sea. We ordered calamari as a shared starter and at $18 it was a big winner, well cooked and tasty - the waitress said the prawns were also great so we decided to try them as well - not so for us and at $24 for 3 prawns it felt like a total ripoff. The mains were great, my steak, a sirloin $25 with chips and onion rings was tasty and well cooked, the ribeye $35 with the same accompaniments was a little more tender but I"d stick to the $25 meal. House red and whites both $8 a glass for a reasonable pour. If we hadn't ordered the prawns it may have been a 5 star review.

what a pity! the restaurant has a beautiful view of the ocean and very decent food, but the service is completely disorganized. After 45 minutes of waiting we asked for our starters and we were told that there was a problem with our order. We then got our main dishes and then the starters, the soup as a second dish.... This mess seemed very funny to the waitresses who were more hilarious than ashamed.
We were offered a free dessert but after so much waiting and a reverse meal we declined. the last straw: no commercial gesture was made as we did not have dessert. the manager offered us free coffee !!!! a shame. Several people were unsatisfied this evening. I do not recommend this address to HOKITIKA. rather go to Aurora or Fat pipi. Less pretentious, good food and with a staff caring about their customers.

My husband and I had a discount voucher for the restaurant so ate there instead of elsewhere. I wouldn't normally chose to eat in a hotel restaurant but couldn't pass up the discount.
We were greeted by a very genial man, seated by the window with a great view of the sea and setting sun. Water followed quickly along with our drinks. $8 for a bottle of dark beer and $12 for a really good NZ chardonnay (I'm fussy and it was good).
I chose Orange Rough fish of the day served on potato and beans. My husband opted for pan seared salmon on wilted spinach and the same beautifully cooked and seasoned potatoes. Prices were $32 and $27 respectively.
Both of our dishes were cooked to perfection, the fish had a light sauce covering that didn't overpower Orange Roughy's delicate flavour. The potatoes were naturally sweet and the greens added to the colour of our dishes as well as balancing out flavors.
Other diners ranged from families to older/younger couples and groups. All the meals looked equally as enviting as ours. Sadly we were too full for desert but the ones delivered to table next door looked mouthwatering.
The deck outside would be a lovely place to sit in warmer temperatures. Whether inside or out, the sea view was nice. Food delicious, wine list not huge but certainly something for everyone at reasonable prices. A special mention must go to the slightly shaggy man that served us. Knowledgeable about food, attentive but not overbearing, casual but professional and friendly without overstepping the mark.
We wont require a discount voucher to tempt us back.

The Garlic Bread was to die for. The Ribeye Steak was supposed to come with vegetables but only came with 2 florets of Broccoli and 6 chips. Looking at other tables the cheaper steak came with lots of different vegetables. I had the Salmon and had a great variation of steamed vegetables and potatoes of which I had to share with my husband. Asked for medium/rare steak and started out nice, but got tougher the more you ate. Very disappointing, especially when you pay the price you do. Went and got a dessert from the supermarket and took back to our room as didn't want to risk it.

we booked early and was pleased we did as the restaurant was busy all evening. although we were greeted by a grumpy waitress, the evening got better, the Venison Rissoles were tremendous and the Orange Roughy was superb one of the best fish I have eaten. Wife went with a traditional steak which was cooked to perfection. had some delicious wines and shared the Pavlova to finish.

Staying at the Beachfront Hotel, so opted for dinner here as it was convenient. Very nice looking restaurant, with good views. Service was fairly slow and took nearly an hour to serve us.
My chicken was very dry and tough, I gave up after eating a couple of bites as it was so difficult to cut, though the vegetables were nice. My parents both had the pork belly which was also over cooked, and very bland. No one returned to take my son’s dessert order (included in the kids meal).
Staff offered an apology for the meal when we complained, but still charged us for the food we couldn’t eat.
Hokitika doesn’t have too many options for dinner at the moment, but we would not recommend eating here.

We went for dinner last night because both Woody’s and Stumpy’s were full. My boys ordered entree size ribs which was basically 7-8 pork ribs and nothing else for $24. Total rip off and the place was full of old people eating at the buffet so zero ambience. Our waitress was fantastic however.

I give this restaurant, in the Beachfront Hotel, Hokitika, the award for the best ever breakfast bacon. It was still soft and flavoursome - more like what you’d cook at home than the dried out and tough versions found in most hotels. At Dinner I had the vegetarian option - mushrooms stuffed with a mixture of beans and herbs. It was delicious. He had something meaty, and was very happy with it. There are about ten steps up to this restaurant from the ground floor, and no wheelchair access that I could see. Windows overlook the beach, and face west where the sun sets.

We loved the aspect of this restaurant looking out to sea and the staff were excellent, very friendly and helpful. I had salmon and it was good, my husband opted for lamb shank and he was disappointed and from what I could see I’d agree the peas did resemble bullets. Dessert was disappointing as I’d guess store bought meringues (very average) and sorbet

This restaurant has a good location with a view of the sea so it has that in its favour above other places in Hokitika.
I enjoyed my scampi starter. Hubby had calamari which was a massive helping and completely disproportionate to what you'd expect even though it was nice. The couscous vegetarian meal was disappointing. Hubby's steak was good although very rare in part when he asked for it to be medium rare.
It's better than average, hence the very good score, but this is at the lower end of this range based on the food we had. The staff were very accommodating.

We dined here on our first night and had breakfast here as we were staying at the Hotel attached, the Beachfront. food was lovely, not too expensive and an okay selection. Service was very nice and friendly.
Breakfast had the choice of a full breakfast buffet for $25 or off the menu, whicn is what we chose.

We were staying in the Hotel and due to the wild weather outside we chose to eat here for convenience. Despite not reserving a table we arrived to a busy full restaurant, however with a few table tweaks they quickly found us a table. The food arrived in a timely manner and was lovely. Views were amazing, decor a bit basic.

A restaurant with great views over the Tasman sea , an ideal place to watch th the sun set into the ocean. We dined as a family group, we tried to book but we’re told they don’t book groups less than six people. so we arrived early to get a table. We sat out initially on the spacious deck and enjoyed a drink. The service was great, once everyone arrived we ordered our mains a steak , a chicken dish and two Surf and Turf. The meals were cooked well especially the steaks, the overall presentation of the meals lacked any imagination. The Surf anTurf was a steak with tasteless seafood chowder spooned over it and a prawn. Which for the price was pretty average. This is not a top dining experience more pub.bistro dining with an inflated price. Overall a bit disappointed
