Monteith's Brewery has a large presence in town and this is their place (located on High Street in the Recreation Hotel). The Monteith beer on tap was delicious; try the Dark. Food was good but the service was very spotty. Even though we enjoyed our entrees (pork chops and beef tenderloin), we waited more than a half hour for our dinner to arrive. We were presented with dessert menus, but the waitress never returned to take our order. Following another half hour, we gave up and went to the front desk to pay our check. Because of the terrible service, we never returned for another meal.

Had this place recommended by lots of locals so had to try.
Wife had pork roast. Pork was a bit dry and veges were average covered in sauce so couldn't see them.
I has the whitebait fritters which had no taste and the oysters which were ok, but served with a typical pub salad with a mayo sauce.
The Girls serving were great and dressed immaculate which doesn't fit the dated decor.

My wife and I ate dinner here during our one night stopover in Greymouth. Staff were friendly and helpful and there was a good atmosphere in the restaurant. We found the menu offered plenty of choice and we were served very good quality food. Restaurant also serves craft beers.

We had Buccleugh’s recommended to us and we arrived around 6.20pm and were quickly seated. We placed our drinks order and then received our drinks and placed our order for entrees and mains. The restaurant was filling up getting really busy, so we understood that the kitchen would be under pressure and hence the delay was understandable.
After almost an hour after placing the order we called our waitress over (not seen since the order was taken) to enquire about the food. She returned a minute later with one main. What happened to the entrees we enquired? No response. She returned with another main a couple of minutes later and then realised we had not received our entrees and said she guesses we no longer wanted them and not too worry we won’t be charged for them. Yes we no longer wanted entrees after mains, which we were still waiting on two of them and of course we would not be paying for them as we never received them! The 3rd main arrived with the ‘manager’ just after that with a barrel of excuses. 3 meals were consumed before the last main even arrived.
Not only was the whole experience a disappointment and disaster but two of the meals were actually cold. The bill was significantly discounted but unfortunately the lack of organisation, lack of service, lack of genuine apology, excuses, cold food and general poor attitude with dealing with the issue soured our night and dining experience.

It has been an absolute pleasure to visit this restaurant for a special dinner celebration, from the moment of arrival to being the last to leave.
If you are on holiday or live in Greymouth and there is one place that you need to visit, Buccleigh on High is the one.
Brilliant extensive menu, great wine list and exceptional service further explained as follows;
We were greeted by the lovely Taylah who carefully explained the specials and then we ordered, beautiful shrimp cocktail for me, lovely presentation and perfect balance of shrimps and thousand island dressing, generous portion and consumed with a 200ml bottle of the best sparkling Italian wine that I have ever had, Mionetto Prosecco.
I was absolutely determined to have steak for my main course and ordered the Surf and Turf and definitely didn't disappoint! Again, generous portion, with a delectable mushroom sauce of my choosing and perfectly cooked scallops and prawns on the side and salad and fries. Just beautiful, lots of choices as well, you can have vegetables and there are different sauces to choose from. Again, beautifully explained by Taylah, so that I was able to make my own personal choices.
Dessert was a struggle to choose and by this stage I was quite full, the Banoffee Parfait won the day, what made it even more special was Taylah presented with candles and the waitresses sang to me. Really, really special.
If I ever won Lotto, I would stay here and eat everyday and believe me I am very picky about where I eat and the reviews that I write.
I would really recommend booking and am so excited about my next visit already.
I would really like to personally thank Taylah our beautiful waitress and the other girls who beautifully present the restaurant and make it warm and inviting, the fantastic chefs for their inspiring menu which should win every award known to man and every other member of staff who works hard at this establishment. Everything was exceptional, even the toilets.
If you are looking for something outstanding, this is the first place to be!

Came here as a family of 5 adults. We were served by a waitress named Jade. She gave a very casual approach, a bit rough on presentation in regards to handing out drinks & taking orders. Felt like she came from a pub background maybe?
Garlic bread starter was good. Very soft-like ciabatta bread with melted cheese on top. We ordered for mains a white bait, a ribeye steak, the calamari dish & the prawn dish. Meals were surprisingly average but large proportions.
The whitebait was a bit disappointing. We never had whitebait cooked with flour & oil before. And it tasted like it had been over-washed, very bland. I guess that must be a West Coast recipe?
The calamari was very good. The prawns were tasty but had too much fruit added. Needed a little bit more radish to balance the fruit.
Steak was good but could have been better, the price a bit steep considering the quality of taste.
This place was packed with people and they were loud so it was a bit difficult to talk to each other at the table.
Good experience to come here but we wouldn’t recommend eating here. Would be a great place to have a beer.

We were recommended this place by several friends once we said we were staying in Greymouth for one night. Wow they were so right, amazing menu, great service, wine list that had great local wines. We shared the salt and pepper calamari, succulent and fresh with a tasty fresh salad. Hubby had stuffed chicken breast and I had the special fish of the day, lemon herb crssted groper with prawns on a kumara rosti with salad. Both dishes so tasty. Thank you Buccleugh's, you are a gem. Hope to be back.

Absolutely delicious dinner for our table of five. We each had something different and everyone loved their meal. We ordered the vegetable stack (just a tad too much sauce but still delicious), the seafood platter, lamb salad, beef salad & pork belly. The main meals are very generous, the light meals are still very filling and the food rivalled some of the best each of our group us had.
The service was exceptional, the prices are extremely reasonable for the huge sized meals and the ambience was simple but lovely. Highly, highly recommended.

The service is great. Lovely staff. Hence the 3
Stars. Unfortunately the food wasn’t. The roast was plated up terribly. Huge portions which would appeal to some, but I felt like it was just overloaded with fatty gristly meat and doused in gravy. They could serve half the amount with a bit more care and it would be a great meal. Unfortunately the tiramisu was runny like a milkshake, inedible. I used to come to this restaurant 10 years ago and it was amazing, maybe a change of owners or staffing. Maybe they were just having a bad night.

I will give this restaurant a 5 star, I made a complaint about the size of the Camembert entree (1/2 size), they immediately offered money back or replacement! My husband had an amazing steak meal & veggie, very much enjoy. All staff were impressively outstanding, especially the you lady who took our orders. Very clean restaurant, with a lovely ambience. Thank you.

We visited with friends. The service was welcoming and helpful. The meals arrived smartly and they were beyond our expectations. The roast lamb was exceptional and too generous, the seafood platter was also thoroughly enjoyed. We didn’t expect this and we were delighted.

This is good honest country restaurant - fresh local ingredients cooked simply and well. I had the local specialty, whitebait, and got a very generous serve and the were delicious. A tip - if you don’t subscribe to the kiwi preference of having these delicately flavoured little fish cooking in egg patties, ask for them “free flow” and you will just get perfectly fired whitebait. My daughter’s steak was also excellent- big, tender and cooked perfectly to order. For around $50 per head including two rounds of drinks it was great value too. Highly recommended.

Great service, lovely atmosphere, and best of all lovely food. Hubby had the tomahawk steak and I had the scallops with cauliflower rice - we shared, both were delish and serving sizesreally generous. Given we also had entrees, calamari and oysters, we will now waddle home content

We were spending the night in Greymouth to break up the drive from Franz Joseph to Nelson. The motel owner where we were staying said that Buccleugh’s was the best restaurant in town, so we gave it a try.
The food was ok, not great. My wife had the salmon, while I ordered the lamb shank. My lamb was overcooked. The salmon was good. The problem is that it took 45+ minutes from the time we ordered until the time we were served.
The staff was friendly and repeatedly assured us that our food was being prepared, but there is no reason for a 45 minute wait.
The next morning, we returned to Buccleugh’s for breakfast, as this was included with our local hotel stay. The food was lousy. The woman who was working the front desk and serving the customers (and there were only 4 of us in the restaurant), gave off a vibe that said she wished she was somewhere else.

We were very disappointed. After our motel manager suggested going, we had high hopes, soon to be dashed. We were a group of four. It was a pleasant atmosphere, soon seated. Then we waited. And waited. Eventually someone came to take our order. We ordered two roasts of the day, a garlic prawns, and a pasta dish. We again waited. And waited. After an hour, our food still hadn't arrived. The waitress came over and apologised, and offered us free desserts because of the very long wait. We thanked her. And waited. And waited. Eventually our meals arrived. The garlic prawns were good, the pasta dish tasted overwhelmingly of tomato, and the roasts - the beef was inedible; very tough. We complained to the waitress, who went to check with the kitchen. She returned to say that they had ordered a tougher cut of beef than usual. So, what were we to do? We had to be up early the next day, and couldn't wait any longer for another meal. We hoped we could 'work something out' when we came to pay. The beef remained uneaten, and the pasta barely touched. We went to pay. The best they could initially manage was an apology, which we thought was insufficient. She went and checked with the kitchen; the best they would offer was a $10 reduction in our $101 bill. We said that that wasn't acceptable as the two beef roasts were inedible. She then offered us a $20 discount, the best she could do. We told her that that wasn't acceptable either, but that was the limit of what could be offered. Under protest, we paid the $81, and decided to let people know how they handle this situation; hence this poor review. The waitress / FOH manager was lovely and wanted to put things right, but clearly management wasn't interested in helping further.
