Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Set menu for Valentine's Day. The three course menu had something for everyone and all dietary requirements which makes it user friendly for almost everybody, vegetarians, celiac's etc. All the dishes came with the same vegetables and if you wanted any more you had to order them as a side. Everything was very tasty and seasoned perfectly. The service was pretty good and the atmosphere was perfect.

Tonic is a small restaurant tucked away off the main road. The menu is really good and the food is great - not huge meals but ample servings. Nothing was too much trouble for staff as one of us was a Celiac so they were very helpful in helping her choose what to eat. Good drinks menu. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and very clean. As we were travelling we could only go there twice and if we are ever back in Whangarei we will definately go back to Tonic.

Tonic restaurant is situated in a block of suburban shops. It’s location contrasts with the culinary delights that you will be served. Tonic ambience is quite formal (salon) and the offering is reflective of fine dining. This wee gem of a restaurant is indeed a great place to indulge in excellent food and service. So power up your GPS so that you don’t pass this by

Ate at Tonic for a birthday dinner. Meals were average at best. "Pan fried duck breast" entree somehow turned up as smoked, hard, chorizo flavored duck (what a waste of nice duck). The lamb & gnocchi main I could have made at home myself for far less than the $40 I paid. Wine selection was average. Will definitely not be returning.

So nice to go to a local restaurant in Whangarei and find everything to our satisfaction. Food , wine, music and service. The Hapuka was perfectly cooked, generous, with a delightful blend of flavours. Lamb was excellent. Everything was superb. To Chef, kitchen and staff, thank you for a job very well done .

I had heard a lot about Tonic and how great the food was so I was quite excited about finally having the chance to try it for myself. Right from when we first arrived we were welcomed by such friendly and inviting staff who were always so attentive. The food was extraordinary and it was such a welcomed take on Asian-fusion. We ate the prawn croquettes and tuna tartare for entrée, followed by lamb rack for main. All of the food was beautifully prepared and cooked to perfection. I had the chance to meet the owner and chef, Logan, who was incredibly friendly and so welcoming. He and the team are so passionate and it really shows through their delicious food and exceptional service. For anyone in search of a great restaurant with amazing food, make your next stop Tonic. I believe it’s the finest food Whangarei has to offer.

Sunday night fixed menu could mean it’s the chef’s night off and not the usual standard. And this was our first time at Tonic so didn’t exactly know what was usual but this was superb. There were four of us and every course was carefully prepared with great attention to detail, delicious and memorable. Service was friendly and competent. We had a great night and thoroughly recommend.

Haven't been to Tonic since it changed hands as I was put off by the reviews. After seeing reviews change we decided to go for dinner. We werent disappointed, everything was superb. Highly recommend the cheesecake which youd think would be fairly standard but it was so light, creamy and flavorful and the berry sorbet was packed with beautiful, fresh flavour. Service was outstanding too. Will definitely be returning.

Very good food. Staff were very friendly and attentive. My steak was perfectly cooked, rosti a little sloppy but tasted good. Toffee brûlée was outstanding. My partner enjoyed his meal too. Only complaint was the table. The bar under the table hit us in the knees and made it very uncomfortable to sit at the table. People at the table behind us had the same problem.

Absolutely delicious meal, both adults loved the braised pork belly. The 10 year old really enjoyed the vegetarian options, particularly the caramelised onion and goats cheese tart. Delicious sides to share and the beautifully presented desserts tasted as good as they looked, the flavours popped. Great service, lovely wines and a pleasant ambience. Going back next week.

My Husband and I ate here last night. I have seen reviews so gave it a try. We were both delighted with everything, food, wine, service and ambiance were spot on. My Husband started with Duck leg which he said was perfect ( he even sucked the bones!) he had the fish of the day which was red snapper with creamy mash and the most beautiful sauce. I had beef fillet with parmesan hash cake and spinach. We had garlic mushrooms as a side. For dessert afforgato for himself and I had the most delicious sticky date pudding with vanilla ice cream! It was to die for. It’s a hidden gem. Will definitely be back.

We booked for the Sunday night set menu. We went for the 3 course menu. Loved the choices and the food was beautiful. Each course size was just perfect for us and we left satiated but not overfull. We also matched the meal with lovely wines.

We were looking for a nice restaurant on the last night of our holiday. Tonic had good reviews so we ventured out. Everything was spot on. Lovely food, awesome presentation and on top of that excellent service and ambience. The Guava yoghurt mousse with passionfruit puree and pineapple and basil sorbet was sublime.

Xmas eve catchup with family that was a special treat.. Pleasant surrounds, great atmosphere, excellent service and really tasty food... Not a large eatery so booking would be smarter than just rolling up,but you may get lucky.. Thank you people for a really great evening.
