Just wanted a snack and they had a lunch special of 'soup and a toastie' which my wife had, i just fancied the toastie so they did that at a great price. Food was tasty and hot. Service excellent, and a great selection of drinks.

We were looking for somewhere to take a break from the extreme heat with a cold beer and some decent pub food. The Dickens was a great find. Ice cold beer, great service and good food. I really enjoyed my grilled chicken burger for it's...freshness and the absence of deep fried filling, instead it featured avocado and fresh salad. My partner had lamb meatballs with tzatziki and balsamic dressing. The food was beautiful and the service was brilliant. I would highly recommend this as a casual and affordable dining option.More
Excellent service. There was a good variety of food on the menu. It was beautifully cooked and very generous portions.
The Inn was just a 5 minute walk from our hotel and being a Monday only a few restaurants were open. The menu was full of good eats and our waitress Cassandra did a good job looking after us. My wife had the vegetarian filo...parcel and I had the scotch fillet. Both were good and an ample serving. The sticky date pudding was adequate but I am very fussy about this dessert. Overall a good dining experience.More
Have been here many times and I have found this time it was not up to scratch. I had the seafood chowder, which only had a broth base, No cream or potatoes that I could taste, just broth with parley in it. One I the...worst chowders I have ever had. Also there was no sour dough bread served at all with this. No side dish to put the 3 prawn shells in and the couple of mussel and cockle shells. Overall I was very disappointed with this meal.More
We had an amazing meal, best meal we have had out in a long time. Garlic bread was great, we were fighting over the last piece. I had the lamb rump and my husband had the short rib, meals came with enough vegetables and potatoes...that you didnt need to order extra sides of veg or salad. As a local we will definitely be back.More
First time in Whangarei for a day trip, was looking for a place to stop in for breakfast. Came across Dickens Inn. Menu out, table service, I ordered the waffles with Bacon and my friend had scrambled egg on toast. FYI, my friend did want...the bagels with salmon, but they were out of salmon. The place wasn’t busy, we were in early around 9am, and the food did take a little while to come out. Waffles were nice, 2 big waffles cut in half, the bacon was good, 2 piles of whipped cream (out of a can) banana which was dry, and syrup. My recommendation with the dish is, to add fruit in replacement of the 2nd pile of cream, and serve it on a plate you can actually cut it up on, there was no room. My friend finished her scrambled eggs, she said it was nothing flash, just eggs on toast.. Pricing was as expected, my waffles and a long black cost $27, with a bit more effort it would sit bang for buck. Would I return, probably not, but at least I can say I tried it.More
Went for lunch, waited over an hour for the cob loaf with butter and balsamic dip and deep fried Calamiri. I had to chase the order and was told it had been lost. When it finally came was told they had been baking the bread!!!...the usual crunchy and hot calamari was cold soggy and a smaller portion than on previous visits, I wish I had asked for a discount!!More
Overall the food was below disappointing. We were tossing up between a few local fav spots and thought we would give this place a try even though we saw the reviews weren't that great. What a mistake ! The food was bland, small portions and...very expensive. We tried the 'signature dish' Beef ribs and out came a charred looking brick that was barely edible. The pizza was horrible ! A 5 year old could make a better Pizza at home, the dough was undercooked. Barely any toppings & small in portion for $27! The only good thing about this place was the atmosphere & the service. If your tossing up where to go, I suggest sticking to the Quay or Jimmy Jacks.More
Overall underwhelming was the overall response from the majority of our table of 14. The salt and pepper squid was disappointing in presentation and taste, and the size of the serve for $22 was tiny. Workmate had one sip of her cocktail and didn’t bother...having another. On a positive note the beer was cold. Won’t be rushing back.More
Called in to Dickens this evening, received a lovely friendly greeting and was shown to a table. All the staff were hard working, but always had a smile on their faces. I had their Scoth fillet steak - it was well presented, cooked just as...I liked it and was absolutely exquisite to eat. One of the best steak meals I have ever had.More
A good selection for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.Gluten dairy free friendly. Very friendly staff. Great atmosphere. Indoor outdoor seating.
Ordered x2 the Fat Boy Burgers. First time eating in whangarei won't be the last. Ordered Chicken & Beef, delicious highly recommend it was the house baked buns that made it, at first glance you might think it's a hard brick bun (iykwim) but no...baked perfectly. Place was empty went around 3pm. Really nice set up clean & tidy, enjoyed looking at the art on walls.More
Nice dinner out, the meal was nice but a bit underwhelming and missing the extra bit which would have made it nice - e.g., potato or veges with the salmon; more garlic with the bread... It was over priced for what was provided. It was...average food at fine-dining prices! the staff were attentive and friendly but seemed new to waitressing and unaware of protocols such as how to serve and retrieve drinks and mealsMore
Must be 9 mussels beards in half kg of mussels at Dickens Inn. As you can see in the picture. No finger bowl for cleaning fingers. No bowl for excess mussel shells. No bread for the sauce. Well disappointed on my experience today. Previously had...great mussels here with all beards removed.More
