Called here for lunch on our way from Auckland to Paihia . Excellent choice of freshly made food . We ordered chilli nachos to share as a starter & two main courses , but when the nachos arrived realised that we were going to struggle to eat our main courses . The waiter very kindly offered to cancel one of the main courses (BBQ chicken burger) so we could share the other (Middle Eastern vegetarian salad) - which was excellent , as were the banoffee & pecan pies which we were able to squeeze in as a result !

So I went for my birthday on a wet Sunday morning as this was one of the earliest opening cafes. It was a bit miserable outside but very quaint spot with a patio heater to keep us warm. I order creamy mushrooms, my partner ordered eggs bene and our wee guest (younger sibling) ordered waffles. All the food looked great. Mine was easily the nicest creamy mushrooms i've had in my life. My partners eggs bene looked great (and he devoured it so must have been ok) and his sisters waffles looked amazing however the passifruit was a bit strong. While I enjoyed them she didn't so much but she later said she never likes waffles (so am unsure why she'd order them).
Pricing was bery reasonable however as you'd expect with a breakfast not huge portion sizes - very reasonable for what you pay. I'd recommend and I'll be back :)

This is the second time we have been here in a month while visiting family. The first was for the coffee just before they closed, this time we arrived a little earlier and grabbed a late lunch a little after 2pm.
My sister and wife both had the salt and pepper squid with a salad, and I had The Riverside Club Sandwich. Two coffees, three Coke no sugar's and a nice table outside under the shae with a view of the marina area for company.
The coffee was good, the food fresh and filling and the staff friendly and quick to get the food delivered - would have been no more than 10 mins.
Definitely a place I would visit more often if I could

We stopped here on the way up north, and then had such a lovely meal that we stopped on our way back to Auckland. The location and view are lovely, and the service and food were great. Even being extremely crowded - Saturday brunch - everything moved so smoothly and staff were very friendly. Will definitely return.

Brunch after a walk was pretty disappointing.
Waited 35 min for a cup of tea, eggs in the full breakfast were completely over cooked. Omelette was ok but under seasoned.
People next to us also waited 20+ min for their coffee.
Place was a bit busy but not overly so.
Won’t go back in a hurry

This is a sizeable establishment - lots of tables outside under cover, with a pleasant outlook to the attractively developed area beside the marina, and across to the yachts and marina itself. More tables inside too. Both cabinet and menu items - a good selection across both categories. We went for the creamy mushrooms with bacon, and the toasted club sandwiches (having seen the latter being delivered to nearby tables). The latter came with chips, which we didn’t want, but we were able to swap these out for a small side salad. The staff here are very efficient and professional , keeping the tables turning over by cleaning them quickly , and getting your meals to you in excellent time too. No wonder this eatery is popular with locals of all ages. Toilet off the servers area; also lots of public toilets at different places in this marina-side complex.

They have a gluten free menu available with plenty of options. I was here for breakfast and got the full kiwi, lovely soft GF toast, real pork sausages and baked beans with all the trimmings, was very happy. So much on my plate I was able to share some with my partner who got the eggs Benny which he loved! Yummy mocha frappe with whipped cream to top it off. Highly recommend. Lovely quayside area for some people watching and outdoor seating. A few Gf cake options in the cabinet also. Very happy!

Visited Riverside with 3 generations of family including 2yr old twins. From the moment we entered the Cafe the wait staff were right there offering to make up a table for our medium sized group with 2 highchairs alongside. The space was roomy, comfortable, and out of the way of other diners... suiting us perfectly. A big kiwi breakfast, 3 eggs benes, a serve of bacon & banana hotcakes, muffins and coffees were duly ordered and arrived a mere 10min later; we were impressed and delighted at the speed with which our meals and beverages were delivered from kitchen to table. Add to this, the delightful wait-staff, especially Imran (whose name we asked for), all were warm, welcoming, and nothing we ordered or asked for was a problem... Imran and team simply obliged, helping make our family brunch rather special, especially as it included grandchildren and great-grandchildren who travelled home to NZ from Perth and who we don't see very often. Anyway, bottom line is, the food was delicious, the service excellent, and the overall cost very reasonable. Happy to recommend Riverside Café for brunch or lunch, or just for the coffee. You won't be disappointed.

I don’t normally write reviews unless they’re a great experience but this was really disappointing so I hope my review serves to warn others. My bagel, which took nearly 40 minutes and cost $20 consisted of a teaspoon worth of avocado at best, and 2 small slices of tomato. When I complained they made me feel like I was making a scene over nothing and urged me to order bacon to make the portion bigger. Needless to say, we won’t be back.

We had to visit twice in 2 days as the first visit was excellent. Large portions and tasty fresh ingredients .
The first day my husband and I had the warm kumara salad. Lovely large portion with fresh ingredients. The kids had the kids burger which was the size of a regular burger at other places!
The second day we had waffles, eggs benedict and club sandwich. Huge portions.
Despite the cafe being very busy, food was fast, fresh and hot.

Great little cafe. Best creamy mushrooms in town! Food is consistently good and they cater easily to vegan or vegetarian friends we dine with. Staff are helpful and well managed. Any minor problems we have had here, have been promptly addressed. Great place also when our family visit as they cater easily to larger groups and a mix of ages.

Have been to this cafe on and off over a number of years when visiting Whangarei. Its a busy location attracting both locals and tourists. However, today's fare prompted a comment, even though I consider myself quite forgiving, given hospitality hard times. Creamy mushrooms on toast (what could go wrong), one of my favourites for brunch, so my palate knows what it knows. Sauce was a weird ochre colour, and upon tasting I said to my husband that I would put good money on a bet that the 'creamy sauce' came out of a cream of mushroom soup can. Creamy mushrooms is a no brainer..... cream, mushrooms, flourish of herbs, season. Report card - could do better. Didnt give a 'terrible' because a staff member wished me an amazing day and the requested chai really was extra hot.

This is a great restaurant; good food, nice situation. The only thing was we’re at Covid-19 level 2 in Whangarei. One of the waitresses wore a mask not covering her nose for our entire visit. The rest of the waitpersons wore their masks properly, so it was just one person who if infectious would have spread her germs to everyone. Really not good enough.

Actually quite impressive service - we were told that a large group had arrived and our order could take some time. We weren't in any rush so were happy to wait. Surprisingly our orders came out in a reasonable time - at least half the time we expected to wait so service was excellent - staff were friendly and efficient despite the obvious pressure they were under. Food was good and people watching while eating was great entertainment. Recommend

We had lunch with our family here today. We'd heard they had gluten free options and have two coeliacs. They had a separate gf menu (although only seem to have a couple of copies and we had to ask especially). There were lots of options although no separate gf fryer. Fast friendly service and good food. Recommended.
