Visited for brunch; quite a busy little place....read previous positive reviews and felt they reflected our experience. Ordered falafel pitta and omelet; the latter is highly recommended. It comes with a bagel; tasty salad and dipping sauces. Really large meal for a relatively low cost. Pitta was a much smaller dish reflected in the price.....would definitely recommend a visit....

Not Jewish, but I am always a sucker for the clean freshness of Israeli food (my absolute favourite is Shuk in Bondi!) . But we didn't visit for Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner. Arriving in Whangarei around 4pm after a drive from Auckland, the options for a good coffee were few and far between. This is not a Whangarei problem of course, as most coffee shops just about everywhere start shutting down their machines after 3-4pm due to slowing business. Delighted beyond belief (and expectations) to be served a great coffee, made exactly to (my fussy) order. Husband's chocolate brownie, served as a slice of cake, with cream, was equally perfect. Thanks guys! Will be back when in the locality again!

Our first option for dinner, in the Basin, was rammed on a Saturday evening so we moved onto Quality street, downtown Whangarei and sat down in the Fat Camel, which proved a good choice. Typically casual Mediterranean/Israeli place with the food options you would expect. I had a lamb dish and my wife a couple of entree options we were both very content with the fare. Gluten free and other dietary requirements catered for. Pleasant staff. Recommended would definitely visit again when back in town.

We ordered the mezze platter as wanted to try the stuffed vine leaves. We also ordered a mains platter which was $36 (which had falafel, lamb, chicken, salads, rice). The mezze platter was $24. When it came out there were no stuffed vine leaves. Partner started eating it. The food was very good, nicely presented, but no stuffed vine leaves. I asked the waitress and she advised they have run out of vine leaves so they substituted for falafel and often do that. Thats not good enough. We should have been advised that one of the main advertised ingredients on the mezze starter platter was not available and given US the choice of whether we wanted to cancel or order something else. They just said sorry about that and that was it. Bad form. You dont go to an ice cream shop and order chocolate and they give you banana - not without checking.

The most expensive breakfast we've ever paid for! $32 for the salami shakshuka that consisted of 2 poached eggs, 4 thin slices of salami, canned tomatoes and onions with a few spices. We paid over $100 for 3 breakfasts and coffee. Seriously outrageous.

We visited on the strength of recent reviews and wanting something a little different...our dinner was excellent with well seasoned flavours, very fresh and well executed salads and good serving size. We had the 'Special Platter' with several dishes in one which proved an excellent choice. Our waitress (from Belgium) was a star. Highly recommend.

We have been using The Fat Camel for years. The venue is very relaxed and homely, you could be anywhere in a backstreet cafe in Israel. The staff are friendly and obviously like working there. The menu is comprehensive and caters for every taste in Mediterranean food. The plates come to table laden and taste as good as they look. We depend on this place when we are tired and need a place to relax and enjoy a good meal.

Pita pockets are often our go to quick meal when travelling. Fat Camel did a superb job on both the lamb and chicken swarma sandwiches. They were very flavourful and full of veggies and meat with a delicious sauce.

Friends and I recently had dinner at Fat Camel. Staff were absolutely lovely great customer service. I have not been there for over a year and prices had gone up hugely and food reduced to almost half of what it was. Also unfortunately not as tasty as I remember it. Desserts were on point however! Great prices, very yummy, but I probably won’t eat there again other places in Whangarei have put prices up a little but their food is still the same. Was a little disappointed ☹️ Old Fat Camel food deffo a five out of five, by all means put your prices up for sure I totally get that, but please serve the same food as before.

Fat Camel is highly recommended as the food is out of this world. We tried the platter to have a taste of everything and each and everything tasted brilliant. Kudos for the service as well. Did well to take care of everyone despite being extremely busy. Will definitely be back.

The food is high quality, fresh and tasty with a broad selection of options including sides. I tried one of the chicken plates and it comes with smooth creamy hummus and beans, beetroot, rice etc it is filling and delicious. There was no air con if this is important to you. We were lucky enough to experience the street theatre outside in the lane. There is wine, cider, Kombucha etc and I'm excited to return during the day to try their coffee. They also have a selection of cakes and slices. You can eat in or takeaway. Service was excellent.

We had two pita breads full of meat and salad. I wanted to show my husband Israeli food, as we were passing through. But the food was a bit too bitter, I think the dressing on the slaw was too vinegary and not balanced enough. Also the cabbage (may have been fermented) on top of the pita was also not the nicest, bitter also. So it wasn't a great example to show my husband but he is still willing to try again. I would still recommend this place as it has a great atmosphere and the coffee was nice. But I would suggest them to use more tabouli in their dishes keep it authentic Israeli.

Chilled place in the middle of Whangarei. Food was amazing and I especially enjoyed the mixture of different salads and flavours in falafel pita. Also, I really like it when people do falafels properly (i.e. without (over)cooking chickpeas), and this surely was one of those places. Would definitely visit again, although I probably won’t be bake to Whangarei (soon) :)

We had a very disappointing late lunch today. Service was slow and meals were very overpriced considering the salads were basic and premade from the fridge. $39.50 for a heap of falafels, rice, cold salads and sauces! No pita bread or extras. We enjoyed a meal there a few years ago when we were visiting which is why we returned. We won't be back.

We were recommended to this restaurant by a local and were so pleased we took the good advice. The food was incredibly tasty and really good value. The hummus is the best I have ever tasted. Great service and friendly staff. Definitely to be recommended.
