We had heard good things about this place as it's under new management. The food did not disappoint. Abbey was a superstar this evening. I thoroughly enjoyed your wine suggestions

Although the atmosphere can be really good, parking space at the front and rear of the castle is excellent...but the food!!! I have had to eat here 3 times. A family wedding, a birthday function and a work function... each time the menu stayed the...same...... "A tired old menu". It's like a time warp back to the late 70's & 80's!! I will never eat here by choice. Diced beetroot, peas that looked anemic almost stewed looking, bland roasted potatoes, bland salad, glazed carrot over soaked, roasted beef braised in gravy, fish bits then dessert...oh my gosh...what looks like packet bought cheesecake sliced up, brandy snaps filled with cream, jelly, fruit salad... need I say more. Boring - dated menu. It has so much potential if only a NEW OWNER or NEW MANAGEMENT REVAMPED IT.More

I hadn't heard any feedback about this place until recently and the comments were that the food was nice. My friend and I went there for lunch today. The people were lovely - very attentive. But oh dear............the food................. When you think of buffet you...think of generosity - tables groaning with a large variety of delicious dishes. Sadly that was not the case here. There was a very limited range of hot food; and the salads? They were sitting in VERY small bowls on the buffet. The curried egg salad was nice, the seafood salad although nice, shouldn't really be called seafood as it consisted entirely of surimi - and therefore should just be called surimi salad. But the most disappointing salad on offer was the lettuce - it was just plain sad and shrivelled up. Some of the dessert offerings were nice. I understand that with buffets there is a fine line between profit and loss; that wastage is a big problem but it would appear that the owners have crossed that fine line and are struggling. But their response to the struggle seems to be to offer a sad and meagre buffet, which won't encourage people to come back which won't help them. We didn't return for 'seconds' because neither of us wanted to have more of an item, or try another item. We just left feeling sad. Sad about the buffet offering and sad for the owners.More

Dining here reminded me of the story of the child saying to his teacher: "I don't think I deserve 1/10 for this assignment." The teacher is said to have replied, "Nor do, I but it's the lowest mark I can give!" To gain this kind...of rating from me requires great effort. Let's begin with the decor. It is very tired and outdated. The selection of wines and beers in the bar was poor and there was nothing on tap. As for the food choices, I appreciate that there are special challenges in providing a buffet-type meal but most chefs these days know how to get around that problem. But not here. The vegetable soup was like nothing I had ever experienced in my life. It was served with a slice of bread that could have come from a low-end supermarket 'own brand' plastic pack. When it came to the main course the hot selections were barely lukewarm (and we were not late evening diners). The chips and roast potatoes were almost unacceptable and the two main meat options (beef and ham) were drenched in gravy/sauce and overcooked. The peas appeared to have come from a can and simply been warmed over. The bain-marie was either not up to the job or its thermostat had been set far too low. The salad selections were borderline acceptable but I did not notice any choice of vinaigrette or salad dressings available. As for the dessert, this was the most disappointing pavlova I have ever had and the trifle literally tasted of nothing...the cook had clearly either forgotten to add the sherry or had put in so little that it got lost in the other ingredients. But the piece de resistance for sheer awfulness was the coffee. I was forced to take back my assessment that nobody in NZ these days does bad coffee. This place does! The coffee had clearly been sitting around in its pot for quite some time and was well past its best. The staff had clearly not noticed. At $35 per head this was exceptionally poor value for money and in 2016 when there are many other good options around Wanganui this place deserves to be given a wide berth; either that or it could become the setting for a restaurant-themed 'Fawlty Towers' take-off.More

There were 40 people at the Mid-year Christmas Dinner. The place was laid out as it would be for Christmas; there was even Christmas Pudding. The food selection was wonderful and catered for all taste buds. The cost per head was reasonable and the ambience...was great. Not too noisy and at this time of the year the place was lovely and warm.More

Came here for lunch years ago. Still the same food, has not changed. Wasted my money here. Only thing I liked was the chilled water. Won't be back.

We arrived with a large party of adylts and smalls. We were recieved and seated by the owner. He expalined the menu and points of interest. ( viewing window atthe rear). From then on we had what I would say an exceptional time. From the...start to the end of our meal. The choices of food. Salads, hot meats, vegetables, rice, sauces, roast veg, soup, and the sweets well .... the brandy snaps to die for just enough crunch with the melt in the mouth feel. There was so many dishes to remember but I tried several. We all took small portions as we could return as many times as we liked. With clean plates being offered each time Tea and coffee. The whole experience was well above what was expected. And price wise. FANTASTIC. Thank you for the experience will come again.More
