Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We had an absolutely delicious full breakfast, whilst surrounded by beautiful and stimulating art, in a friendly environment. A "must visit" for traveller's and residents from Whanganui

I just dropped in for a coffee, chat, scone with cream and jam and some quality time with the Jack Russell watch dog. It’s difficult to get a scone “ just so” but they had mastered the art and the mountains to sea cycle tour...reached a new high. Great ambassadors for The Whanganui region.More

Stopped in here for lunch as we cycled from Pipiriki to Whanganui. What a great place. Bits and pieces of Art work for sale along with various odds and ends that were all interesting and affordable. The food was excellent and we were made to...feel really welcome. The toasted sandwhich was oozing fillings and cooked to perfection. The blueberry muffin was one of the best Ive ever had, again so full of blueberrys. Just absolutely delicious. If you are going this way its definitely worth a stop offMore

An essential coffee (and carrot cake!) stop as you explore the Wanganui River. Run by friendly people, it is housed in a former school. Take the time to read the articles in the entry way about the past times, and teachers, of the school. The...gentlemen might appreciate the artistic arrangement in what was the boys toilets (complemented, I hasten to say, by a proper working toilet.More

We loved staying at Matahiwi. Marlene and her family have made some simple but wonderful cabins with homely touches. They are powered and have a shared kitchen where you can prepare food. Our family cycled through from Ohakune down to Whanganui and stayed at Raetihi,...Pipiriki, Matahiwi and Rivertime Cottage. Perfect for small kids. Also cafe does lovely food and cakes.More

Really enjoyed coffee and a muffin at the lovely Matahiwi Gallery Cafe. Some other tourists we met upriver recommended we stop, see the River Queen paddle boat (from the 2005 movie of the same title) and have a good coffee. The coffee was indeed great,...and we enjoyed seeing the local art and crafts. Picked up a Christmas present while we were there. Just a fantastic little gem along the roadside.More

The old school now a gallery and coffee shop comes as a welcome break on the river road. Not a lot to eat here but a good coffee on offer. Apart from the local history on show there is the original River Queen boat made...for the film of the same name just a few years ago and left behind by the film company.More

Driving hours on the Whanganui River Road from Whanganui town, we finally stopped at Matahiwi Gallery Cafe to find the owner Marlene and have all her attention as we were the only guests. Lovely coffee and a few snacks. But more important to talk about...all the local art she exhibits (for sale) in her café. Most important to listen to her stories. In front of the house there is an old steamboat that appeared in the NZ famous movie 'River Queen' on the Maori wars of the 19th century. The Gallery Café is only open from October to May, closed from April to September.More
