Surprised to find several Japanese restaurants here, we came for an early dinner on New Year’s Eve with no reservation but were welcomed. We chose to sit outside as it was hot and sunny out still at just after 5 pm. A cool looking mural decorates the brick wall in the courtyard. Service was friendly and quick. We had the pan fried vegetarian gyoza for starters and they were excellent. Then we each ordered a bento box which was great value and very filling. The miso soup was delicious (and I’m usually not a fan). Location is easy to find and lots of parking on the street. A local recommended this place and it did not disappoint!

We are a couple, visiting Wanganui for the first time and went to Momiji without a booking just before Christmas when the restaurant was almost full and very busy. The service was polite and prompt, the food was delicious and the venue lovely. The tables are well spaced and despite the crowd, it did not feel congested or too noisy.

I feel far more positive about this restaurant after this visit as I had a few problems with it on my first visit. We had 2 young children in our group and went in for an early dinner. Our waitress was lovely and friendly and had a child the same age as my grandson so she interacted with the children which was really nice. We decided to just have a wide selection of entrees that we could all share and the food was amazing. The kids liked to be able to try lots of new things and coped with most of our choices. We will definitely take them back again.

Really disappointed. There with family with plans to go to lantern festival afterwards. We were forgotten and it was nearly 45 mins before we had to ask to order. A large Japanese party came in 5 mins after we arrived and their orders were taken straightaway. Meals then took nearly an hour to arrive and came out in drinks and drabs. We missed the festival 😢 Meals were not of the usual standard either.

...so delicious we ate here three times over our long weekend in Whanganui! We still haven't exhausted the menu and will be back to try more! Service was quick, smooth and all food was of an excellent standard. The Katsu Chicken in particular was so tender and we loved the Bento Boxes and Dumpling selections. There is a wine menu, good sake selection and Japanese Beer. They also have great lunch specials. There is not a lot of ambience in the interior décor but they do have a large well set out outdoor terrace with a beautiful mural, this was unfortunately closed during our time there.

Visited this restaurant with my partner for our 1 year anniversary, booking a table is essential so you can get a table before they get busy! Lovely food, fresh, hot and delicious. Best Japanese Chicken Katsu Curry I have every had. Tried a few new things too and they were delicious. Good portions for the price and tasty to boot!

We’ve eaten amazing Japanese Kai all around the world but momiji beats anything we’ve had in london central town and Hawkes Bay (where we’re from) as we’ll as our favourite Japanese restaurant in Ponsonby Akld. At momiji, the food when it comes out is even better than the stunning photos presented in the menu. The staff are immaculate as is the kitchen that could be seen from our seats. Thank you Momiji Whanganui.

Went on a quiet Tuesday night, an entree of spring rolls shared to start the evening, then I had the stone grill steak and it was fresh and perfect, generous serving and no problem to swap out the starch (wedges) for extra salad. Partner had Chicken Katsu curry and was impressed with the seasoning and portion size. Lovely wine , clean airy surroundings. very reasonable price-wise. A very pleasant night. we will be back.

My wife and I were visiting Wanganui for two nights and decided to try Momiji Restaurant for dinner one of the nights. The meal was excellent and the service was efficient, friendly and helpful. Menu prices were very reasonable for the quality and quantity received. The restaurant is in the old BNZ building, which makes it classy due to the old time architectural elegance (yet the atmosphere was suitably informal) and therefore large enough for families and groups. A very enjoyable experience overall.

Momiji is located in a beautiful old building close to the river and next to the movies. Ample parking close by. The interior is quite stylish and has an authentic look. The choice of dishes and sides is perfect and the service fast and friendly. We had a selection of dishes at different occasions and the food was divine, sushi perfect though limited in variety

We were hopeful when we saw the menu outside had tempura and vegetable sushi, but we're disappointed to be told that there was nothing vegan! Not even the tofu! Left soon after. Thank you to the lovely new waiter who was very apologetic though.

4 of us did dinner without a booking. 45 mins for gyoza, 55 mins for mains. Was busy as not much else open but waited a long time for plates of food resembling something from a food court.

We do & will continue to keep coming back to Momiji for date night. The food never fails and its always so prompt. Not somewhere will bring the children back to though, quite a quiet restaurant and tables are very close to each other. Cannot fault the food though! Delicious!
