Here for Breakfast ordered Eggs Benedict and Caramel Latte and both were just Divine cannot be faulted 10/10. The place was very clean and tidy, staff onto it and bought water over and in no time breakfast was on the table. Very friendly staff.

I was on Palmerston North on holiday and dined here. I was very impressed with the range of options available on the menu including desserts. I liked the presentation of the garlic bread and the crunchiness of the bread. I also liked the decor which included the chandelier and the mirror panel on the wall which to me gave the feeling of this place being royal.

We ordered the winter salad with chicken and the duck leg with steamed vegetables. The salad came in big portions and the chicken breast was seasoned with cajun but overcooked so a bit rubbery. The duck leg was nicely cooked and seasoned. Definitely better of the two. Staff there were attentive and friendly. Rating: A-

Have been here many times with my husband, like the food, service usually OK but not as good as it once was. Went on my own this time for a quick bite and a drink before a talk - first time on my own after spouse's recent death. I could have been invisible to the younger wait staff. Stood at counter to check where I could sit, as many tables were laid out and, presumably booked. Finally when I asked if I could take a particular table waitress nodded and asked if I was there for a meal. Sat down and water eventually appeared. Waited more. Went up and helped myself to a drinks menu. Further waiting. Eventually went up to counter and asked if I needed to order there. Got a menu at last and waitress said they all assumed I was waiting for someone. Why is it assumed that a woman on her own must be 'waiting for someone'? And why not at least ask if she wants a drink even if she is 'waiting'? Some women do dine alone, folks!

Just visited Barista tonight & my steak was a disaster. Ordered it medium & it came well done & the sauce was wrong. We paid the bill but after when the waitress came to the table I commented on the steak & she said it would be passed on to the chef. We sat & finished our wine but NO response from the kitchen. I wasn’t after a discount or free meal … just an acknowledgment from the chef. Very disappointed 😬

It’s either great here or it’s terrible. There is no in between. Two weeks when we came it was fab. Today it was not. Today we ordered cabinet food and cold drinks as the day had been warm. We asked for a knife to cut and share the truffles and were told one would be brought to the table. The guy didn’t seem particularly pleased that we had taken some time to decide what to order even though there was no one else waiting to be served. After we ordered he asked if we had a table. I said not yet and then he asked if we were alright to sit outside even though there were two empty non-reserved tables inside. We agreed to sit outside but the wind was unpleasant and the sun quickly disappeared. We went to the car to retrieve warm jackets and sweatshirts to enable us to tolerate the temperature. After 7 or 8 minutes of waiting I went inside to ask for a knife again. The waitress didn’t look particularly pleased I had asked her but did get me one straight away. Sitting outside it seems they play the annoying music that stops groups of teenagers congregating outside of their shop as the inane twangy and annoying noise coming from the speakers doesn’t qualify in being called music. All in all a disappointing experience today and because last time the experience was a 5 while today was a solid 1 I went with an average score of 3. I don’t know that I’ll risk this experience again next time I’m looking for an afternoon tea hangout with my daughter.

In town on business. Nice looking place with good coffee. Had the soup of the day and the scotch fillet which was cooked well. Unfortunately, the service was rather slow for my liking. Our coffees took an age to arrive and there was a long period of time where our waitress didn't check on us. Although our waitress was polite she wasn't particularly friendly. We had just traveled all the way from Auckland and expected some of that small town hospitality (which we received at a competitor the following night). Due to be back in Palmy again but will likely avoid.

Our waitress was smiley and efficient but it was the food which let the evening down. The steak was very dry and overcooked, it was tough to cut it up and hard to chew even with the sauce that was on the plate. The BBQ chicken pasta was bland and over salted. On the plus side the starters were excellent and one of the other mains was declared delicious. Maybe, I hope, it was a one off as we love Barista normally and this was the first time we had a poor experience there.

We have frequented this cafe for quite a few years with large groups and ones, twos etc. The food has been nice but have had problems with surly staff on several occasions. Today we found out where this attitude comes from. Again we had a largish group (good income for the restaurant you would have thought) Again we had a lukewarm welcome, we’d arrived a bit early and were told off because they had to set the table (this seemed to be water glasses, serviettes with knife and fork so not arduous.). Begrudgingly we were told we could sit down while they, “set up”. Most of the meals were fine but the French toast $18 was a small piece of bread cut in two, marscapone and maple syrup . Fine as far as it went but minuscule for the money. When the owner was told in a nice way that the two people who had it weren’t satisfied with the value for money point of view, he was very rude and said he wasn’t prepared to do anything about it. We then got a diatribe about how hard he worked, how hard the kitchen staff worked etc, etc. Fine but that wasn’t the complaint. I myself work in the hospitality industry and was appalled by the way this benevolent complaint was handled. I wouldn’t dream of treating or speaking to a client in that way and would have addressed the matter they were complaining about not moan at them about how busy I am. Needless to say he has lost the custom of a whole table. At the moment it is a busy cafe and the owner probably/definitely doesn’t care but you wonder how long he can have the attitude he has and still retain a successful business. Not a good way to start the New Year and I can only compare it to the visit we’d paid in the morning on our way to Palmerston North to a cafe in Paekakariki where all we’d bought was a scone and coffee but where we’d been greeted in a cheery and friendly way, the food and coffee was excellent and nothing was too much trouble. I know where I will be spending my money in future.

Dear Gubbrog I’m sorry you felt that way, you may not know that in NZ you can’t refuse to pay after you have fully eaten your meal and that’s what the three staff you approached were kindly trying to explain. If you didn’t like the size or style then let the provider replace, refund or discount it. Otherwise it’s theft, just like taking something from a supermarket. In saying that I would have expected that you might have been offered a discount but since your friend paid for the table it wasn’t possible to fix this at the time and there’s nothing I can do this late. I hope you enjoy your next trip to NZ, all the best for your holiday. Kind regards Gail

We ordered garlic bread and “sautéed” potatoes. The garlic bread was so burnt and hard I couldn’t even bite into it. The potato dish should be re named “boiled potatoes and oil” it was so greasy the bowl was filled with oil in the bottom it was so vile. I told the waitress that I couldn’t eat the food and the staff were really unhelpful. $32 for a a pile of garbage I couldn’t even eat. Go to cafe Cuba instead that place is so much better

I have always enjoyed Barista Café but on Sunday I was very disappointed. We had a table booked for Fathers' Day brunch. There were no welcoming smiles or enthusiasm and the waitress certainly didn't go out of her way to make us feel comfortable. I have enjoyed meals that I have had previously at Baristas but found the sautéed potatoes very disappointing. apart from the eggs which were beautifully cooked. There were too many potatoes (and I really like potatoes usually) and virtually no mushrooms or other ingredients. The other three members of our family enjoyed their meals. Service definitely need to be improved.

A busy cafe in a good location we visited as the reviews were reasonably consistent • Sunday brunch was busy with families and students . We had eggs on “white toast” with bacon and fish of the day The fish was tempting on the menu as it came with ricotta and lemon fritters . Sounded yummy but the deep fried quenelles were over cooked and hard and fish and cherry tomatoes sauce similar . Best to stick to coffee and cake and grilled breakfast as this was quite ok . Service was quick and coffee ok too

Over from the UK visiting family, and went in here for lunch. Service was great, and prices were very reasonable. I decided to have the Calamari Salad. Wow! Never had calamari so tender it just melted in the mouth. Amazing. Might have to pop in again and ask the Chef what his secret is. Great place!

Had a fantastic flat white and beef salad this afternoon, and my partner enjoyed their lunch as well. Staff were awesome with their customer service and were polite in asking us to not take the only table they had not yet cleaned (Covid protocols mean they have to clear and sanitise). Also witnessed how quick they were in removing anti maskers one who said ‘I’m not putting on a f’ing mask. Who were only asked politely if they were able to wear masks. These people actually came back minutes later and the waitress was a legend in her handling of them. Polite and stern about the rules, and refused to accept their ‘fake vaccine passes’. Hospitality workers must be having it rough and must be tired of the crap they put up with from the nutty anti vax brigade.

A friend and I shared the salt and pepper prawns and they were absolutely delicious. But the highlight for both of us was the bowl of seasonal vegetables. Simple veggies, carrot, cauli and broccoli but cooked perfectly and the sauce was superb. I don't eat broccoli usually but bought some today and am going to try to replicate the sauce.
