Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What a Superb place to visit and the atmosphere is fantastic, called in for a coffee and something to eat. The date scones we had were without a doubt the best we have ever had anywhere and the taste of them was out of this...world and that seemed to bring out the taste even more with the Caramel Lattes we had which were 1st class as well.( so well done ) The building itself is a lovely old place with fantastic wooden floors and love the quirky handle on the door that is real old school. Just first class service from an obviously well organized team and cannot wait to come back for a full Lunch.More

Thanks for the review. Did you know that our coffee is unique? We import and blend our own coffee beans. We focus on local suppliers, with a strong emphasis on quality which you noticed. We look forward to seeing you again sometime soon.

My partner and I love this cafe.So many delicious things to choose from. The lemon, orange cake and potato hash with extra crispy bacon is our favourite, definitely try the beetroot sauce on top. Always love to stop in on our way to Napier. Staff...are always bubbly and friendly makes for a wonderful visit.More

It’s great to see this cafe supporting so many local producers! The food is fresh and innovative and the staff are lovely. The only downside to my visit was a rickety chair and a depressing exhibition in the neighbouring gallery space.

Thanks for the review. Finding and supporting local suppliers has been part of our mission since we opened. The exhibitions change every three weeks which we love. Being part of the solution to the climate crisis is our motivation to using local suppliers.

Being the first cafe I tried in Palmy, I was thoroughly impressed with the food, the coffee and the service. The front of house were friendly and approachable. The coffee was smooth and beautiful. I ordered the eggs benedict and matcha pancakes. The hollandaise was...delicious on the eggs bene. I loved the idea of matcha in pancakes. The mapled almonds with the pancakes made for a sweet/savoury pancake experience. I would highly recommend Cafe Royale for a true foodie experience. The price was good for the quality of the meals. My only disappointment was the avo smash. The avocado tasted off and old, not fresh. And there felt like an overload of spinach and feta on the plate. Other than the avo smash, I would highly recommend this place for beautifully presented meals and beautiful coffee.More

Came here for breakfast with my mum. Have had coffee here before many years ago but never a meal and was curious to see how it was. Went in with the intention of... well, if it's not good then we'll know just to not come...back. It did not in anyway disappoint! Food was yummy, delivered promptly, but most of all I remember the service from both the staff that were on the front and they just made us feel really welcome. Will definitely be back!More

My son and I came for our first visit for breakfast today, on a recommendation from a friend. We had the matcha tea and oatmeal pancakes, and the vegan big brekkie. Both absolutely delicious.... beautifully fresh local ingredients, perfectly cooked and presented well. As a...person with an egg allergy, it's really hard to find savoury breakfast options that are interesting, healthy and of good quality. These ticked all the boxes! They 'deconstructed' the pancakes (putting everything separately on the plate) to cater to my autistic son's needs with no trouble. The coffee and hot chocolate were also excellent. The extensive plantbased and vegan menu options mean we will definitely be returning to try out out some other options...the cactus tacos and jackfruit burger sound intriguing! Excellent friendly service and spotlessly clean. Can't recommend this cafe highly enough.More

Had the most delicious brunch here, ordered the chef’s special of Tofu with chilli sauce, mushrooms with black rice. It was divine! The sauce perfect with fresh mint and enough chilli to warm your mouth without overwhelming any of the other flavours. The coffee was...great as always.More

Excellent service, good menu with an interesting range of plant based dishes (and other options). Can not fault Cafe Royale. We had brunch on a Tuesday morning during school holidays, the place was not full of kids which was good! Will visit again the next...time we are in Palmerston North.More

I am embarrassed to say that in the 15 years I have lived in Manawatu I had not yet found Cafe Royale but had heard good things about it. Finally got to visit in June with a friend for brunch. Cafe Royale is a cafe...we should all know about and visit - its located in the Square Edge (again I had not previously stepped foot in the building) and its a stunning building with loads of interesting shops and artists/music etc. The cafe has great options and awesome coffee. Very welcoming and friendly staff. I had eggs bene and they were good - two coffees were great. Took home some of the baking for hubby and he was very happy with those as well - will be back for sure.More

I don’t know how this restaurant has got the reasonable ratings it has. I have been four times since it opened and each time it has got worse. It’s been over a year since my last visit so I thought it may have improved. Sadly...I was wrong. Given that no one else was eating there When we arrived I should have suspected. The asparagus quiche I ordered was cold in the middle, only vaguely warm on the outside, soft on the bottom and it was impossible to identify the ingredients. The token filo pastry on top edges was even wilting and it tasted awful. I could not eat it. My husband ordered the soup of the day which arrived without a spoon, was not heated through adequately and looked like bowl of gloopy mud. My apple crisp was apple soggy. It was difficult to actually identify if the pinkish glutenous substance under the top soggy layer was actually apple and underneath that was something that was even slimier - hard to fathom if that was raw pastry dough or something resembling old custard. Never againMore

Cafe Royale is situated on the ground floor of the Square Edge Arts Centre on Palmerston North's central square. The cafe has a relaxed, friendly, atmosphere, a little bit bohemian and with healthy food - all the right ingredients for an arts centre. At off...peak times, it is relatively quiet, so a great place to sit and read your book or do your crossword, or for quiet meetings, as well as group gatherings. You can shift tables and chairs around to create the space you need. The food varies from nice wholesome snacks such as scones and muffins to nice quiche, smoked salmon and salad rolls (very tasty) a variety of salads and a nice array of cakes. The portions are generous and the prices average. They have a loyalty card so after 9 coffees you get one free. Service, always pleasant, can sometimes be slow, so it is a place where you come to relax and enjoy. It can get busy at lunchtime and on the weekends, especially when there might be a music or performance event in the adjacent art gallery. It is part of the interesting arts sector of Palmerston North that extends northwestward around the central square.More
