Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Fantastic food and friendly service makes this one of the best cafes in NZ. Make a point of visiting when you are in Palmerston North. Recommend the big brekkie and the lasagne, deliciouS

Went for morning tea with my daughter and two grandchildren. Chose the Verdict because of play area. Waited quite some time before finally asking how long for coffee and told there was a business meeting so very busy and would be another 10 minutes. Asked...for takeaways as had already been half an hour and we were taking the children to the library. Finally got the coffee, two large takeaways. We had ordered small coffees because that is how we like our coffee. I did not even drink mine, warm flavoured milk. Waste of money. Another customer was asked to stop her child from crying because there was a business meeting next door. If a business meeting is going to be that important and take so much time of staff, they need to clearly tell people of delays and possibly closed the children's playing area. Not impressed.More

So disappointed after my sister was verbally abused and treated unkindly by a member of staff after coming in to order food and utilise the play area. The staff member accused her of only coming here to use the play area, to which her response...was the same as mine. Of course we do. There are many other lovely cafes in Palmerston North at a much more affordable price. However we choose to come to the verdict on a weekly basis, spending $30+ each time, simply because you have a kids area that is great for keeping the toddlers happy while we eat and drink. The staff member then went on to complain about my sister to ANOTHER CUSTOMER!! Such a disappointment to know that our favourite cafe has now left us, along with our friends who come along regularly also, feeling incredibly uncomfortable about being judged for taking advantage of the play area.More

Absolutely mindblown by the run in I experienced with the girl behind the counter today!! I'm unsure of her name but she was the ginger haired girl that is normally making coffee.I entered the shop at 3pm with my 11month old baby 9 and 11...year old sons. I grabbed a tray and a few plates and started picking what to get. The girl says to me "upstairs is closed" (she knew I was heading here as I am a regular) I was fustraighted and asked her why it doesn't state that on there website which I checked for closing time before I left ashhurst and came over closing time stated 4pm. She said they don't have a website. I responded with Google search says closing is 4pm. The stairs were open there was nothing stating it was closed. The elevator was open there was nothing stating you could not go up stairs. She told me it's closed for deep cleaning. Annoyed that I litrally drove here from ashhurst to have a meal with my kids I said "okay well nevermind then" annoyed I put my tray back and began to leave. As I was walking to the door I heard her say "Leave then if your only using us for our play area" gobsmacked I turned around and started walking back towards her. She was speaking to a customer about me and I heard her say "she comes here every week and" and then she saw me and I said 'are you kidding I haven't even left yet! You litrally just got caught talking badly about me to your customer which she tried to deny and then went on to say that I'm only using you for your play area!!!! I am a mother my baby likes to play while we eat. I by passed every single cafe in palmy to come to yours! Not because your foods the best, not because your staff is the best but because you have a beautiful play area for children! Me along with alot alot of other mothers in Palmerston north. I spend good money in your shop every week somtimes twice a week I even feed my baby your food when we're "using" you for your play area. This altercation went back and forth with her and I for abit longer voices raised the customer she was serving was dead silent and the elderly lady sitting with her food looked uncomfortable as I turned to leave. Im sure she has already played the situation off like she wasnt at fault, but this will all be on camera and I believe you also have sound so you will be able to see what was said. Me and the mums group I created come here with our babies and have since they were a few weeks old and if this is the type of reception we are receiving to bring our babies to play with somthing you have provided is absolutely disgusting.I will never return here here ever again and neither will alot of other people now.More

...because this place gets busy and if the owner is on the cash register and comes across someone she knows, she's VERY chatty and it can slow down the queue (significantly). The cabinet food is fairly decent but zero pricing, so you don't know how...much you're spending until your order is tallied up. Coffee is OK. Other staff are lovely. I find the owner to be quite intrusive so I try not to engage with her. I only ever pop in for coffee, usually at or before 10am (try and avoid 10am though as it gets very busy). This is a kind of traditional NZ cafe (but old school). Lots of retired folk. Grab a tray and slide it along the cabinet selecting what you want. I have ordered off the menu before and it's nothing to write home about. I usually switch between this cafe and another for my coffee as both are close to my work. And I will keep on coming cos it's not awful. There is an upstairs area with seating and a closed off outside area too.More

Your business, the Verdict caters and staffs the UCOL cafeteria. She (Amelda?) appears today to be a in foul mood. I suggest you send her to a customer service workshop. You have lost a regular customer in me today as I definitely will not be...going back nor will recommend colleagues to buy. All I did was lightly touch the glad wrapped slices and was rebuked like a little kid. This is an adult tertiary establishment and we do not need your staff rebuking us like little children in the presence of other customers. The rudeness left a sour taste in my mouth for any of your goodies on display. I would rather walk the distance to grab a coffee than face the brutal verbal lashing form of your staff. Perhaps you should rotate your staff and put someone that will smile & be respectful. Would be nice to have a younger lovely personality to replace the non smiling present person :(More

Worst experience at a cafe, older person serving kept on talking to previous customer for ages while que was getting longer. I asked another what the pies were and opted for a steak and Guinness pie which turned out to be a butter chicken. The...table was so wobbly that all our drinks filled their saucers. Will not be back and will spread the word.More

We stopped here for a late lunch on the long weekend. We got a coffee, date scone and a bacon/egg English breakfast muffin. The service was okay, nothing stood out but nothing terrible. Pretty straightforward, what you'd expect from a cafe. The coffee was an...average coffee, for coffee consieurs this won't be anything special but for those looking for a nice social drink it works. The date scone was brilliant! Highy reccommend. The bacon/egg muffin was soggy and unappealing, we didn't finish most of it. Slight letdown to the visit. The bathrooms and the cafe in general was clean and tidy and the atmosphere was buzzing and loud, typical of a busy cafe. Overall giving a 3/5 rating, the soggy muffin bringing it down, could have been remidied with better service.More

Very nice environment, great child friendly area upstairs with a cozy couch and a beautiful view. The cabinet food looked amazing, however we ordered from the menu, and that was our disappointment. I ordered the salmon, which didn’t look like salmon. It looked ripped apart,...sad and discoloured. However the poached eggs were ok. My daughter ordered the big breakfast which was average and nothing special. It was not all bad, I would like to come back and try the cabinet food is it really did look amazing.More

Intending to have brunch here, my husband and I selected items from the cabinet. He chose cold food; I decided on a stuffed kumara which needed to be heated. My husband also ordered coffee. a good half-hour or more, the food and coffee still hadn't...appeared even though the cafe was not particularly busy. Eventually, my husband went to the counter and cancelled our order, asking for his money back. The server complied, though with a very bad grace, being quite loud and a bit argumentative. Just how much time and effort does it take to put a plate with a single piece of food into a microwave and press a couple of buttons?More

Visited this cafe last week and there no tongs visible so asked the woman on the till for something out of one of the food cabinets (owner of business), was snapped at & told tong were underneath the counter. She very begrudingly went & got...the food from the cabinet and another customer in the queue also couldn't find the tongs and was rudely told where they were. The staff here can be very abrupt with customers. I ordered a toasted sandwich & waited 20 minutes, was just about to leave without it as I had to return to work by a certain time when it arrived - it wasn't exactly the fillings I ordered and gooey cheese oozing out of it on all side. Their standard of food has slipped since they moved from their previous premises and I certainly won't be going back there or recommending them to anyoneMore

Decided on fish, salad with some chips. $12. Salad and chips were ok, but fish was extremely disappointing. I wondered how many days prior it had been battered and deep-fried! It was dry-looking, and zero out of ten for appearance. Taste almost matched its appearance....It definitely had not been recently cooked. Most disappointing.More
