Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Best meal I’ve had at a Thai restaurant. Delicious food and reasonably priced. Big reasonably priced dessert. Will definitely return next time we’re in Palmerston North.

The Thai Orchid Palmerston advertises that it offers a range of vegan (and gluten free) options. I went recently with a large group and found several small chicken pieces in my vegan curry. Regrettably I'd already eaten half of it by the time I made...the discovery. The manager and chef apologised for the 'mistake' but suggested that it was only a little bit of chicken and that they were very busy with the multiple orders- which in my book is no excuse and simply unacceptable. There was no explanation as to how the cross-contamination occurred. Someone else in our group ordered the non-vegan version of the same dish at the same time, so I suspect the restaurant may be using the same curry sauce and/or utensils for both the meat and the vegetarian/vegan options. Sadly this means the 'vegan' options cannot be trusted, but more worryingly, such culinary carelessness could, have more serious repercussions for people with allergies.More

Travelling for work and stopped at the closest restaurant after driving from Taupo. Asked the waiter for a recommendation between two dishes and went for the prawn cashew and veg. OMW I was not expecting a mouthwatering orgasim! The flavours just fit so well! I...came back the second night as I wanted to try my second choice from the prev night, prawn pad Thai and it did not disappoint either! The beautiful ambiance of the restaurant made me feel so calm and the lovely waiters and waitresses were so friendly! 11/10 🌟 big high-five to the waiter with the neck tattoo! Your recommendation and friendly face will have me coming back every business trip down!More

This was really disappointing. I don’t do reviews but I felt compelled to do this. The Tom yum with prawns tasted like the prawns were off and was inedible. The satay chicken was not authentic at all, looked disgusting and was essentially sweet runny slop....This is the worst Thai experience I’ve ever had. I’ll give them credit, they did discount off the Tom Yum and were polite.More

Great evening meal here, the crispy prawns for starter were lovely with nice dipping sauce. Main was chicken satay with lots of fresh vegetables. Great flavours. Place was busy for a Sunday evening Nice staff

Outstanding food, best Thai duck ever. Service too quick (I did arrive at 5.30) and Muzak annoying but more than compensated for by superb cooking and spicing. Would return.

Excellent service, patient and very courteous staff for our group of 10 on the Saturday night of Queens birthday weekend. Very tasty selection of dishes, nicely presented. Would go again and happy to recommend. BYO assists with making this a good value for money restaurant.

We have been regulars at this restaurant but tonight we had the worst meal. The service was not up to normal standard. The prawns and meat were overcooked in each dish. Very disappointing. We are not planning to go back anytime soon. Very sad because...we used to enjoy this restaurant.More

A good Thai meal, service was good. Very disappointing $10 glass of wine. I let the waiter know when we paid for our meal that the wine was not good and the bottle had been open too long. He replied that 'yes, he thought the...cap wasn't on tight when he opened it' and that was it! No apology, no adjustment of the price of meal. Nothing. Disappointing.More

Sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry....we could've turned this into a drinking game if we were the sort! Our waitress was constantly apologising for no reason, asking us if we were ready for the next course, when clearly, having had finished our meals and waiting, and waiting,...we were. The food, practically inedible - we ate it because we were hungry, but I'm pretty sure the Satay recipe comes from an Alison Holst cookbook from the 70's rather than an actual Thai chef. With my satay duck, at the cost of $27.50 without rice (and for half a plate of salad), I counted a total 4 pieces of thinly cut "duck" (though, I wonder if that "duck" had ever gone quack in its life). The Thai fried rice lacked any flavor, and was rather, steamed rice with par-cooked veges. The waitress was training someone, so had a shadow, but it was really weird....like following every step, and waitress being quite bossy - not a good vibe for my parents who were visiting. At the total cost of $130.00 for entree and mains for four people, we would've been better off going literally anywhere in the city - you could not pay us enough to set foot back in this restaurant.More

I booked a table for 2people at 7pm. When we arrived they had no record of it. It took an hour to order and receive 2 gin and tonics. All I could taste was lime. When we were finally served our food was cold. We...had to ask several times for utensils and extra plates as we were sharing dishes. The satay chicken entree was stone cold. The zizzling steak cold and so tough you couldn't eat it. The cashew chicken cold and tasteless. When we complained the was no opology given. They expected us to pay full price for food we couldn't eat. Eventually gave 10% discount which was a joke Will never go back. I would have to say it was the worst dining experience I have ever had. Take my advice...stay away.More

Today we went to the Thai Orchid. We were a group of 5. We ordered drinks and a meal. One of our meals we ordered spicy and when it arrived it was not spicy at all. My father ordered sizzling steak and it was burnt....My brother ordered a drink and it took 3 times in order for him to get the drink he ordered. When they asked how it was by the waitress my father told him politely and they walked off before he even got to tell them about the food. I am disappointed and I will not be coming here again.More
