I had arrived in Te Anau about 6 pm and unloaded the clients I had driven down from Dunedin. I needed to take a break and also have a bit to eat. It has been some years since I last had been to the town and there were now quite a selection of eating establishments around the centre of this tourist town. I did not have time for a sit down meal and wandered about to see what might suit. Fortunately I came across Olive Tree Cafe and read the menu display outside. I noticed that they provided takeaways and had burgers. The Boss burger caught my eye. So I went inside to order. The inside decor was very much in cafe style and there were a number of people seated at tables having a meal. There was also provision for outside tables front and back from what i recall. I ordered my Boss burger and a takeaway flat white. Just about choked on the price of $24.50 all up but Te Anau is a tourist town after all. However I had asked for the biggest burger foolishly (double meat patties) . The meal arrived fairly quickly along with the coffee. The burger was in a polystyrene container along with chips so it was a bit more than I expected in a sense. I walked back to where I had parked the car and there was a handy picnic table where I was able to sit down and commence to consume my meal. The chips were very nicely done and so was the more than adequate burger. In fact I had some difficulty negotiating it into my mouth. The coffee was good. At times I knew that I had bitten off more than I could chew and reluctantly had to admit defeat and concede that the burger was indeed the Boss. I'm sure the local sparrows also enjoyed the small portion I had to leave behind. Certainly set me up well for my return journey to Dunedin

After a long day of touring, we just dropped in to the cafe for a welcome cup of tea. There were various delicious cakes available and so we had to try them too! The cafe also serves meals and, although we did not try them, the food looked good. Another plus was that the cafe seemed quite happy to serve lunch to other customers, even though it was around 4.00 when we stopped in for tea. Good service too.

Quirky wee cafe, tucked away off the Main Street but certainly worth a visit. We’d been on a boat tour and popped in for lunch. We were greeted warmly and chose a table while the waiter bought water and menus. He came back quickly and took our order, hubby had lamb bomber, roast lamb and onions in a grainy roll with gravy and salad. I had a toastie with ham cheese and tomato. The toastie was packed full. Afterward we shared a very large piece of carrot cake (delicious) and coffee. There are nice clean toilets.

We should have known what was in store for us based on the half. or less, consumed plates we passed on tables while being seated! Our server was amazingly young and had no idea of how her restaurant’s dishes were prepared or what they contained. We were a party of three. My daughter ordered a prawn plate, I had a BLT sandwich and my wife had a Cajun chicken salad. The Prawns arrived slathered with an orange mayonnaise goo on them that also saturated the rice the prawns were on. My BLT had a reasonable quantity of bacon on an unusual roll covered by the same orange goo that was on my daughter’s dish. Everything on my plate was also covered by the mayonnaise mixture. My wife’s salad, amazingly came with the same orange dressing. After eating several forks of salad, my wife sat looking at the salad with a very odd expression on her face. Later I found out that she couldn’t eat any more because she thought she might have to throw up on the table. My daughter was having a similar reaction. My dinner wasn’t any better. So we decided to pay our bill, leave our almost full bottle of wine behind and leave as quickly as possible. As I paid the bill, I could see into the kitchen and saw one of the staff pick up a large squeeze bottle With the orange dressing and slather that dish also This dinner, we all agreed, was one of the worst we had ever had.

I usually recommend this cafe while in my place of work, as a local who goes to different eatery’s in Te Anau on Sunday’s will not be returning or recommending this place anymore. I arrived just after 12pm today, which is when the breakfast menu stops. I understand this, but after looking through the menu there wasn’t anything in particular I felt like and asked if I could have the eggs Benedict. The staff member checked with the kitchen and they said “no, the poaching pan has been turned off” so I decided to eat elsewhere. On my way out the chef came out and yelled across the room that I should come in before 12pm next time. I wasn’t upset I couldn’t have the eggs benedict and would have happily returned another day however the need to come out and say that is just beyond rude and unnecessary. They need to be careful who they speak to and what they say, as a small town word gets around. We won’t be back and will be spreading the word on this cafes bad attitude. Sandfly has beautiful food and atmosphere, go here instead. There is a reason they are always busy.

This spot came highly recommended to us by our waitress the previous night in Invercargill, at a restaurant we adored. So we had high hopes, but were sadly not overly impressed. My chicken baguette sandwich was fine, though I didn't enjoy the "bacon" on it (which I would call "ham".)

Stepping into this café is like stepping back into the early 2000's. The décor and the menu both feel very dated. The staff were very friendly but the food was average. We paid extra for a large wrap, which was much smaller than expected. The side salads with all dishes were drowning in dressing. The menu is extensive, I think they should simplify the menu to one or two pages of dishes they can do really well.

I was pleasantly surprised by this place. Small cafe, but very friendly staff, great atmosphere and quick service. The food is excellent! A bit on the pricey side, but the taste and serving sizes make up for it. We ordered beer battered cod, creamy chicken pasta, snapper, steak, seafood baguette, seafood chowder and asian stirfry. All were great quality. This cafe impressed me enough to write my first review :) Highly recommend a visit here.

We had breakfast at this restaurant this morning and found our dining experience superb. I had eggs beni with salmon. Couldn't fault it. Just amazing. We were greeted by "jodie" who was exemplary. She made us very welcome and we watched her continuing her friendly manner to each group as they entered the restaurant. The coffee was 2nd to none. First time I've asked for a 2nd coffee. The new menu was easy to read and order from. Keep up the good work team. Cant wait to return and try the other new items on the menu.

Six people in our group ordering hot drinks, cold drinks and some light food from the cabinet. We were the only people in the place until one other man came in later. There was a server behind the counter and someone out the back. The food was delivered ok but the drinks took forever with the last delivered after everyone else had finished. Shoulder season yes, but this was lunchtime on a Saturday. Even the other man was asking if his tea had been fofrgotten. Whoever was in the kitchen spent more time yakking than helping.

Te Anau was a strange place with many restaurants shut and most of the others fully booked for the evening. The Olive Tree is tucked a little way back on the main street, but well worth finding. It was welcoming with good food at a reasonable price and plenty of choice for vegetarians and vegans. We were a little late in finishing our meals but they happily produced coffee to their last customers of the evening well past closing time. Sorry we didn't try it for breakfast.

Our family just had a horrible experience here. We walked in at 11am and ordered 5 coffees. No issues at all and sat down to wait. After 25 minutes of waiting my wife walked to ask the counter how far away the coffees are and got an aggressive “ oh at least another 20 minutes”. After she said that we weren’t given any indication that it was going to take 45 minutes for a coffee (there really weren’t many people there) the man behind the counter said in a very stressed and rude tone “yeah well, we are busy here”. So after we got our refund, we walked across the road to another cafe and got our coffees in 10 minutes (they appeared to have the same amount of customers too). Olive trees staff have ruined our experience

We visited this cafe for breakfast during our stay in Te Anau and were so impressed that we returned the next day. They have an egg & bacon on croissant that was fantastic (I forget what it's called on the menu). Good coffee, too.

This was our second visit in as many days which tells you how good this place is. We both enjoyed a roast lamb dinner which was tasty, well presented and served by professional staff who took the time to engage with us. Well done Mike the chef too. Sadly this will be our last visit as we head back home soon but I do recommend this establishment as it also provides excellent value for money.

Went for a lunch. Got a bit of attitude when we asked to look at at menu. " You have walked past it!!!"" But we ignored the attitude. The dumplings were great. Our friends had never tried them before but they were sold!! The coffees were wonderful. The lady making them was concerned that she might muck up my wife's 1/4 shot. She didn't and the other long blacks were probably been the best we have had in a long time. Big thumbs up. Food took a bit too long to come out but the wait was worth it and with staff warning up it was a valuable experience.
